I think he refers to Italy 1990... Ehm.... World soccer cup....

Yes, I know it was hosted by Italy. But as you said, in Italian it's said "Inghilterra". So, it's curious that they didn't use neither "Inghilterra" (in the language of the host country) nor "England" (in English) and used "Inglaterra".

They were labeled England because they competed as England.

Scotland and Wales have their own teams too. I believe its specifically for Football and not other sports (soccer for us Americans ;))

Note the fifa rankings (England is 20, Wales is 34 and Scotland is 37)

At first I also thought that "Yes, they say England because in football the countries of the UK are divided into different teams", but then I read better and I understood he was referring to the fact of saying "Inglaterra" and not "England". ;)

In Greece 95% of people use the word England.
4% use the word Britain (without Great in front  )
and 1% will ask you "what?" if you say United Kingdom. :D

Most people have no idea exactly what each term means! That includes most Brits. Or should that be English people? :p

I remember that when I discovered Eurovision I asked myself why United Kingdom participates as UK, while when we talk about football we have England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland etc.

Not wanting to dance anymore, but I must dance
Well, throughout the years, they've been introduced and had their country on the scoreboard listed as England, Great Britain, and the UK; juries would interchange those thinking they all meant the same thing. The same applies for Holland/The Netherlands.
