I prefer Verka's entry and I love "Lasha Tumbai" and to me Verka was the real winner of 2007 (sorry Serbia), but to Netta's defense, this is not at all the novelty entry some trying to make it look like, this is a serious song, well produced. So it has some "chicken" sounds to it, but what people see as "gimmicky" here, I rather see innovative ways of composition and playing with the whole theme of the song. I'm surprised that people don't see the connection of the meaning of this song and the "chicken-sounds" and the fact that this is what you make when you want to call someone a loser or a coward, and basically the whole song is about female empowerment and telling stupid boys/men to back off, so with that in mind the "chicken-sounds" are actually pretty clever as a metaphor and a quirky addition to the whole production and composition of the entry.... am I reading too much into this?? Bottom-line, I loved Verka's entry, but that was more fun/novelty, this is also fun and quirky but still a more serious track. While I'm afraid juries will be hard on this too, I'm pretty sure juries would have slaughtered Verka back in 2007 had they been involved, wheres with this I can see them getting somewhat onboard atleast.

If this is done well on stage I dont see why this shouldn't be loved by both the televoters and the juries. You yourself have just given a good explanation for that. I think the juries will tend to agree with you; "Toy" is more innovative and surprising than gimmicky. This is welll produced, and the girl sure can sing!

...and in these "me2-times": 2018 is the perfect year for Netta and Toy!

Hahaha, I actually KNOW that this is somewhat serious song, but composed like this with all that chicken noise and silly mouth and arm movements, it looks funny and gimmicky! ( Also I hate lyrics like Pikachu, Barbie, Teddybear, sounds almost like Rybak's song to me) I understand whole point, but many people will consider it gimmicky, and will like it like they liked Verka  About juries I think it could go both ways- top or flop, but I am not sure if she will be first, maybe 6-8th jury place (like Francesco last year, and he had great message, too, and was less annoying, but juries barely recognised message and point, altough staging and performance were bad, I still think juries ranked him too low, because of whole point of the song). For me both Verka and Netta are guilty pleasures songs, because they are both annoying and funny at te same time, and veeerrryyy catchy (at least for me, even though I understand "cleverness" of Netta's song, but I am really not into pretentious songs, that are trying tooooo much to be smart). I respect your opinion about our winner Molitva, but Molitva is MASTERPIECE compared to Verka's song, it is something like Salvador' song, pure emotion and quality. ;)
P.S. I don't understand why all people on the web, when someone doesn't like/enjoy this song, because of cheap chicken sounds, start to explain the real meaning of the song, like we people don't have 2 brain cells to understand the meaning when we read lyrics. It doesn't mean everyone must to love it just because of message, and so called cleverness.

This song is fun and it is quirky and whitty, no denying, I just tried to differentiate it from the likes of Verka that are more "pure fun" if that makes sense? With that said I don't mean that this song isn't mean to be fun either, of course it is, but it's not a pure novelty act, it's way too well made for that and beneath it all it actually carries a message as well, although presented maybe in a "silly" way as you put it here. As for Francesco last year it wasn't as good at this by far, and the "message" was in Italian which I doubt majority of the juries speak, wheres this is in lingua franca, also juries look alot at live vocals, and Fransesco's can be off-putting wheres Netta has more the type of vocal capabilities they tend to like, so taking that into consideration, I think she might have a bigger chance with juries than he had, but I'm not sure.

 it wasn't my point to come off as some sort of smart-ass, it wasn't really directed at you, but I see many people actually don't seem to "get" the chicken parts, alot of people think it's only gimmicky and can't even make a connection to the song lyrics, I didn't mean you were one of those people so I'm sorry if that's how it came across.

LOL. I think you are not getting the chicken part too!!!

Its not the reference to guys as cowards, but self irony as of "I am a stupid chick(en) for you" (listen to 1:03, she clearly says "I am not your ..." before starting to make chicken noises. Song is actually full of self irony "I`m a beautiful creature", making toy/chicken noises etc.

I actually hate the #metoo idea of the song. This movement by now has been so overused that it has a reverse effect on me ("why they need to shove it down my throat all the time?"). But ESC has always been "great" in running 6-12 months behind issues in the world and milking votes out of it.

Unless she has been abused by men in her life, I dont get why she has to sing about that stuff and that way ridicule this (for some women) a serious issue with a gimmick song.

Maybe you should take a second look at the lyrics then? I'm not wrong, and she's not singing "I am a stupid chicken" either xshrug

"He's a bucka-mhm-buckbuckbuck-mhm boy" ... <- Basically she's doing the chicken-sounds in reference to the boy just as I wrote ...

I do agree on your comment on the #metoo thing though, it's long overdue, and the movement itself is questionable, but like you said ESC is always behind times when it comes to stuff like that, on the other hand the movement started after ESC#17 so if they wanted to jump onboard, there wouldn't be any other possibility than now really.

How would the ESC "adress" this issue on time though? The last time it was held it was before the whole movement started

Obviously. But why not just stay out of it? Not every issue needs to be addressed by ESC every year.

... and again this just marginalizes #metoo movement for me. This is a serious issue and ESC, which is largely seen as an entertainment show is not the time and place to deal with it. I am ok with the song and words of it, but leave the #metoo tag away from it. It just feels like one way to get people vote for the song ... and it is a cheap move if you ask my opinion (which no one cares about obviously :))

Also imagine a guy singing about how women treat him like a "wallet", how they abuse him mentally and act like "ladies of the evening" ... we all would be disgusted by a song like this. Somehow a song 180 degrees other way is not only accepted, but also seen as "important to address this issue" song. I call it hypocrisy.

I agree with everything above about Netta vs Francesco, that is true. It is ok, really, I didn't think that about you, you didn't offend me, don't worry, it is just funny that many, many people on Youtube and forums are defending it immediately and explaining its lyrics, in general, it is something like instant reflex.;)

These are indeed very deep and meaningful lyrics, inspirational a life-changing verses that should be valued not only by unbiased professional juror but also by the bright spark televoters:

Hey, I think you forgot how to play
My teddy bear's running away
The Barbie got something to say, hey, hey, hey
Hey! My "Simon says" leave me alone
I'm taking my Pikachu home
You're stupid just like your smartphone

She couldn't say it better. I believe this is just what campaings such #MeToo were looking for. Yes, because liking a funny catchy song is never enough, we have to explain ourselves.

Now if you let me, I will start writing a philosophical essay about Bucks Fizz's winning song "Making your mind up".

I just hope that after Netta wins the ESC, unfriendly aliens will not visit us for at least a year. Because if this is the best song to prove them our cultural development by the year 2018 ... I think the aliens will decide to start the experiment all over again.

if in the year of our lord 2018 you still don't see why it is important that women assert themselves in the face of institutionalized misogyny then please go back to your cave in the desert and never come out again. i will not have this kind of basic "waaah what if it was the opposite" non-logic right in front of me. it's an insult to my intelligence.

also there is a song in this very eurovision year that features a guy saying a woman uses him and is a lady of the evening: lie to me. i personally find it crass and horrifying but clearly people don't have a problem with its message considering how popular it is. so you don't even have a point lol.
