We may have a professional act representing Hungary for a change, if only the broadcaster have some wits :D

Really happy about Dalriada deciding to apply, hopefully they pass to the NF, and I hope that they win.

I would really love to see (well actually; to hear) a great hungarian entry this year. It seems like Hungary might take the contest serious this year.

I hope they do, 2011 was decent but a bit generic, I didn't like 2012 at all though.

During the 00's I just liked their '05 entry, and in the 90's I only liked their debut one... so I'm far from convinced.

To this date I'm still mourning the fact that we didn't get this fab song as the Hungarian entry back in '09, it would have actually been one of my all time favorite ESC songs had she not withdrawn it (of course in Hungarian version! Because I'm afraid they might have slaughtered it with translating it if they'd actually went with it):

2009 was the only recent entry I haven't liked from Hungary. The last 2 years have been very good, so as they send more good music, I'll be happy.

Re: HUNGARY 2013

Magdi Rusza represented Hungary with Unsubstansial Blues back in 2007. I find the voting pattern for this entry rather interesting. The nordic countries (or call it block if you like) do tend to vote for each other - and indeed, in 2007 Sweden were the favourite amongst the other nordic countries (and hardly got any votes from non-nordic countries).
Also Serbia scores very high in the north: with an average of 9 points from the 5 nordic countries. But then again, Serbia did very well all over Europe that year.
The third nordic favourite was Unsubstantial Blues; actually receiving an average of 8,4 points from the 5 countries. And 1/3 of Hungarys total votes that year were rewarded from the 5 Nordic countries (32,8%).
On the other hand; Bulgarian entry Voda (that ended up in 5th place) only received 5 points from the nordic block that same year - all 5 points from Finland.

I find the 2007 nordic voting a very good example of the similar taste we tend to share in the nordic countries.

I hated "Unsubstantial Blues" and hope to never get an entry like that again , Hungary have done better than that, NOX remains their best entry (although the live vocals were weak unfortunately). ... and as for the 'Nordic taste' VikingTiger, it's obvious that Finland has the better taste... ;)

You dont like the blues and soul genre dont you? Otherwise you would love it. It finished 2nd in the semi and 9th in the final, in a year without juries, for a reason!

No, it's not the genre. I like soul though, blues may not be a fav genre of mine but I judge songs not genres mostly.

What reason? Ending up high on the scoreboard in ESC is note necessarily a measure of quality or whether the song is good or bad. But, this is of course my personal taste, if the majority liked it then that's their decision.

I understand that's your taste but it's really surprising that you think that this song doesn't have quality, and that you rate something like NOX above it. She kind of oversang it in the final, but it was still damn good! :D

Well, that's the beauty of music right? Taste is subjective and personal and one person's favorite can be another person's horror

There's no doubt about NOX being better for me, Magdi's entry has very little to do with Hungary while NOX was ethno-pop in Hungarian which imo on paper is always preferable in a contest where entries ought to represent their countries.

BUT, a song need to be good for me to like, I'm not liking anything just because it's in native language or ethno-inspired over something that is not, but in this case NOX had by far the better entry... imo it's the best Hungarian entry to date by miles, but I do admit that it was performed vocally weak (although the performance itself was pretty good).

Had Katya Tompos been going to Hungary in 2009 though, that would have been my favorite Hungarian entry to date (if it stayed in its original version that is), and that song is a complete different genre than NOX, and way closer to Magdi's genre... so it's not a genre problem for me.

I hope for a great Hungarian entry in 2013. In 2012 I was disappointed with their choice, they had better options in their selection. Renata Tolvai was my favorite, but that was also a case of bad live vocals... more so than in the NOX case :(, but as a song it was more or less what I want to hear in ESC... not some American blues or ballads that has zero connection to the country it represents...

I agree with you that ethno songs are a great contribution to the ESC, but if I like an american blues ballad, even if not ethno at all, I'll support it over the ethno song I dont like.
With that said, it's obvious that this subjectivity is the beauty of music, and ESC, dont get me wrong
I did like NOX, but it doesn't come close to Unsubstantial Blues in my opinion :D
I agree that Katya Tampos entry was indeed great. Very great actually, could have even finished int he top 5 , and it would certainly do better than that horrible generic cheesy song Hungary sent in 2009, whose name I dont even remember.
And yes, I hope for a great Hungarian entry in 2013, they deserve it, as MTV seems to be caring a lot with the ESC later, and it would show that central-european countries can do well.
Wow, I'm listening to Katya Tampos song for the first time, that is really great! It's very close to Magdi Rusza's style, even Carolina Af Ugglas whom I love!
Let's hope something like that can come from Hungary, or another coutnry for that matter this year :D Why did she withdraw?

Well, don't get me wrong either, I'm not supporting a bad song from a genre I prefer/like in ESC over a better song from a genre I'm not that big of a fan of, it all comes down to the best song for me aswell, just to make that clear :)

Well, the Hungarian selection 2009 was kinda messy:

They first internally selected some AWFUL Disney-pop song which turned out to be the same song as the Big Brother Sweden 2004 theme song ,

...so they had to pick another entry... so they choose Katya's entry (also internally) as their second choice, but then she declined because of her schedule. Zoli's 'Dance with me' became their third and final internal choice, which was an English version of his single 'Tánclépés'.

I do agree though that considering that they withdrew for 7 years, and then did some short withdrawals even after their comeback in 2005, with 'A Dal' it seems atleast that they are finally putting some effort, so I do have hopes for Hungary although I wasn't convinced last year at all.

But you see what I meant with Katya? That song is not that far away genre-wise from Magdi's entry (and yeah I totally agree it has a Caroline af Ugglas vibe aswell), but I still liked that one while I didn't like Magdi's at all.. so it all comes down to the certain song and not genre.

Yeah, yeah I get you don't worry. Honestly, how did they end up with the theme song of Big Brother Sweden? That's just ridiculous  It really is a shame that Katya withdrawn.
On another note, I just noticed how many letters "I eat" when I type very fast without checking what I just wrote. I'm very sorry for that

Fair enough then :) It's just that people tend to think I only care about songs being in native language and preferably ethno for me to like them, but that's not really the case.

I know right? And from 2004 aswell? Totally ridiculous indeed!

Yeah, such a shame Katya couldn't make it :( As I wrote on the other page it would have been one of my fav ESC entries ever and my fav from ESC 2009.

I didn't notice actually

Oh I so agree with you :( :( What a song and what a voice! She withdrew cause she is firstly an actress and she played in numerous theatres. :?
If you wonder why she's dressed like that in the picture; the song is a soundtrack of a movie, and within the movie it was performed in a musical in which she was playing a prostitute. The man in the audience is her (character's) father who originally was against her performing.

And MTV made a stupid decision too: after Kátya withdrew, the composer wanted the song to be performed by another singer, but MTV refused that and chose another entry instead. That singer would have been Ildikó Keresztes (more famous than Kátya, currently a mentor on Hungarian x-factor), she released her version on her album the next year; well imo it's not as good as Kátya's version, but still would have been better than Zoli. :)

Actually this style of music is (or was in the 70s) popular in Hungary; Magdi herself confirmed that her inspiration for writing "Aprócska blues" was this Hungarian song:
(I can hear the similarities especially in the way the song begins :))

You dont like Magdi's song in Hungarian either? Personally I love it; her participation in 2007 made me a fan of this contest. :D
