FSC Norway - October 2011 - Torstein Sødal feat. Anne Takle - Life Worth Living

XC42F4h.jpg

Representing Norway in FSC October 2011 is the Norwegian pop/classical crossover-singer Torstein Sødal feat. the Norwegian singer and songwriter Anne Takle on a beautiful ballad and duet called “Life Worth Living”. Here is some more information about them.

Torstein Sødal, born in 1977, once a carpenter before starting his musical career, has a powerful voice that will capture you. As stated on his webpage: “If you listen to him at a packed Bislett Stadium in Oslo, in front of an ecstatic audience of 40.000 people in Moldova, at the Norwegian MGP, or during a Christmas concert; this is a voice you will not forget!”

Born and raised in a big family in Kristiansand in southern Norway, where music was a main influence, and where they actually have their own choir and marching band, it was perhaps natural for Sødal to become a musician.

His debut album self-titled “Torstein Sødal” came out in 2008. It entered the music charts in Norway and included the popular radio-hit and ballad “Winter Song”, his Norwegian MGP-song “Eastern Wind” (which came 2nd in MGP in 2008), as well as several other melodies in the pop/classical crossover genre. His powerful voice was evident on this album and it became very popular in Norway especially among adult audiences.

In July 2011 he released his 2nd album called “Our Story”. The album, which received fair reviews and became popular among his fans, included many memorable songs, including “Morning Mood” (a Norwegian hymn now given lyrics for the first time ever), and also the beautiful ballad and duet “Life Worth Living”, which featured the singer Anne Takle. “Life Worth Living” is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC October 2011.

Kjetil Bjerkestrand, Martin Sjølie, Jörgen Elofsson and Adjoa Skinner are among the writers and composers on this new album, which was recorded together with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

Our Story (July 2011)

Over the last few years Torstein Sødal has been one of Norway's most popular artists during the Christmas season, touring with the church concerts named "Stille Natt, Hellige Natt", and with Hanne Krogh of ESC-fame, but his passion goes beyond the Christmas spirit. He has a large heart for humanitarian projects, something that also can be noticed in some of the lyrics on his new album "Our Story". As late as in April 2011 he visited Moldova, a country he has focused on during the past eight years trying to help disadvantaged children. His experience with these children has had a great impact on him: -“My meeting these children changed everything in my life. I felt for the first time that I had found my passion. I could make a difference for all these forgotten children”, says Torstein Sødal in an interview. Today he feels that he has really found his place, with an album that not only wants to offer you some good melodies, but also tells you a story with an impact.

Anne Tungland Takle, artist name Anne Takle, (born in 1976 into a “musical home”) also comes from the Kristiansand area of southern Norway. She originally wanted to become a songwriter (in an interview she said that she grew up with a dream of writing songs for other people), but realized that her talent as a singer meant she could combine singing with writing.

Rolf Løvland of Secret Garden fame came across this talented female performer and was so impressed with her that he wanted to work with her. Anne Takle therefore became the vocalist that sang on the “Nocturne”-version that was included on the 2007 Secret Garden album “Inside I’m Singing”. This became in many ways her breakthrough. That same year she also co-wrote (together with Laila Samuelsen) the song “Am I Supposed To Love Again” which Veronica Akselsen performed in the Norwegian MPG.

In February/March 2011 she released the single “Stay With Me”, a beautiful piano-ballad produced by Rolf Løvland, that received some radio-play and recognition. A second single from her forthcoming album was released in June 2011, named “Gravity”. In addition to this she features on Torstein Sødal’s ballad “Life Worth Living” which she co-wrote. 2011 has been a busy year for Anne Takle, with singles-releases, songwriting and concerts, and she now looks forward to getting her album released on Universal Records in the near future.

Torstein Sødal and Anne Takle are two very talented Norwegian singers, songwriters and performers, from whom we will without doubt hear more in the years to come.

Our entry for FSC October, “Life Worth Living”, is alas a beautiful and special ballad and duet with meaningful lyrics (about helping to change the lives of those less fortunate in the world), co-written by Anne Takle, performed with heart and soul by two of Norway’s finest singers. We are happy to enter Torstein Sødal feat. Anne Takle in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for October! :)

Torstein Sødal feat. Anne Takle - Life Worth Living

Beauty works in the water
With her son and daughter
Washing clothes in the river
With a well, how can we change lives

How are you reaching out
To the world before you
Could you be giving more to
Others, a sorrow froze you

You can be sunlight
You can make Life worth living
Glad the heart that’s giving
Helping to change a life

Peter walks since the winter
Seeking lives with answers
Learning, cold in the small room
With a school, how can we warm his heart

How are you reaching out
To the world before you
Could you be giving more to
Others, a sorrow froze you

You can be sunlight
You can make Life worth living
Glad the heart that’s giving
Helping to change a life

You don’t know what to do
To grow the heart in you
Reach out and take a hand

How are you reaching out
To the ones who need you
Go where you heart will lead you
Help them to dry their eyes

How can we help
If we never try.

FSC Norway - November 2011 - Helene Bøksle - Hildring

X46v3KN.jpg

Representing Norway in FSC November 2011, and for the 2nd time in the FSC for Norway, is the talented Norwegian Folk-pop singer and artist Helene Bøksle. Here is some more information about her.

Helene Margrete Bøksle, or just Helene Bøksle as is her artist-name, was born in 1981 in the Kristiansand-area of southern Norway. A musical talent from an early age, she gained national fame in 2003 when she took part in the Norwegian talent-tv-show “Kjempesjansen” and came a good 4th. In 2004 her musical and theatrical concept called “Elverhøy” was realised and an album of the same name was subsequently released in 2006 to much success both commercially and critically. Helene’s own brand of Norwegian Folk-pop music, with folk-music rhythms and instrumentation (including the famous Norwegian Hardanger-fiddle, Hardingfele) and also featuring her distinct beautiful crystal-clear voice, became very popular and she quickly established herself as one of the main Norwegian artists in this musical genre.

In 2008 she contributed - with success and acclaim - with her vocals on several songs on the Norwegian-produced MMORPG “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures” music Soundtrack. In early 2009 she then released her 2nd album called “Morild” which also became a commercial and popular success. In November 2009 Helene Bøksle released a Christmas album called “Det hev ei rose sprunge”. This album consisted mostly of traditional Christmas songs but it also included the song “Lys Til Nattsvart Jord” (“Light to a Darkened Earth”), a beautiful new song written and composed especially for Helene Bøksle by Elin Nygaard, which was the Norwegian entry in FSC December 2009. She re-released her Christmas album in late 2010 and the album now included 2 added songs.

In February 2011 Helene participated in the Norwegian MGP with her Folk-pop single “Vardlokk”. She reached the MGP Final but did not make it to the top 4. Her song and performance was appreciated though, as was subsequently seen by fan-reaction both nationally and abroad. In the summer of 2011, in June, Helene Bøksle’s latest single “Hildring” was released for digital download. This was another beautiful Folk-pop song of hers, and it is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC November 2011.

Helene Bøksle: Discography

2006: Elverhøy
2008: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (MMORPG Soundtrack)
2009: Morild
2009: Det hev ei rose sprunge (Christmas album)
2010: Det hev ei rose sprunge (re-release of the Christmas album including 2 added songs)
2011: Vardlokk (digital single, January 2011)
2011: Hildring (digital single, June 2011)

Now in November and December of this year Helene will perform at selected Church Concerts around Norway and many fans are looking forward to seeing her and to listening to her beautiful singing voice in concert.

Helene Bøksle is without doubt one of Norway’s greatest and most beloved Folk-pop singers/artists and from whom we will without doubt hear more in the years to come.

Our entry for FSC November, “Hildring”, is alas a beautiful Norwegian Folk-pop song, that almost goes in a waltz rhythm. It has Norwegian folk-instrumentation and meaningful Norwegian lyrics besides Helene’s crystal-clear voice. We are happy to enter Helene Bøksle once again in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the Norwegian lyrics for the3song as well as an English translation. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for November! :)

Helene Bøksle - Hildring

Havet nynner en vals full av solskinn og latter / The ocean hums a waltz full of sunshine and laughter
Når kvelden får roe til rytmen blir stø / As the evening calms to a steady rhythm
Så kan skumringen hente fram herlige skatter / And then the twilight can bring forth great treasures
I dufter fra blomster og sjø / In the scents from flowers and the sea

Og jeg finner din hånd i det himmelen gløder / And I find your hand just as the sky glows
Du lener deg mot meg fortrolig og varm / You lean against me, secure and warm
Sakte vogger vi valsen som bølgene møter / Slowly we move to the waltz made by the waves
Du smiler og byr meg din arm / You smile at me and give me your arm

Kom følg med meg, min venn - inn i sommernattens under / Come - join me, my friend - in the wonder of the summer night
Vil sveve igjen over sommerdugg i eng / Want to float again above a summer meadow
La oss danse, min venn - alle sommervalsens under / Let us dance, my friend - to the wonder of the summer waltz
Legg armen om livet og kjenn / Put your arm around me and feel

Som en venn som er slitt lar vi månen få lede / Like a tired friend we let the moon lead us
Dit sansene flommes av lukter og lyst / To where our senses are flooded by smells and lust
Og jeg svimler et øyeblikk henført av glede / And I get dizzy for a moment, driven by joy
Jeg lener meg inn til ditt bryst / I lean against your chest

For ditt blikk er det hav jeg vil flyte av sted i / ’Cause your eyes are the ocean I want to swim in
Din favn er en himmel der jeg kan få fly / Your embrace is a sky wherein I can fly
Over dans, lyng og vinden, så lett eventyrlig / Above the dance, the grass and the wind, so magical
Vi valser til dagen blir ny / We waltz until day breaks

Kom følg med meg, min venn - inn i sommernattens under / Come - join me, my friend - in the wonder of the summer night
Vil sveve igjen over sommerdugg i eng / Want to float again above a summer meadow
La oss danse, min venn - alle sommervalsens under / Let us dance, my friend - to the wonder of the summer waltz
Legg armen om livet og kjenn / Put your arm around me and feel

Kom følg med meg, min venn - inn i sommernattens under / Come - join me, my friend - in the wonder of the summer night
Vil sveve igjen over sommerdugg i eng / Want to float again above a summer meadow
La oss danse, min venn - alle sommervalsens under / Let us dance, my friend - to the wonder of the summer waltz
Legg armen om livet og kjenn / Put your arm around me and feel

Legg armen om livet og kjenn. / Put your arm around me and feel.

FSC Norway - December 2011 - Secret Garden feat. Moya Brennan - The Dream

HfS6yNv.png

Representing Norway in FSC December 2011 is the Norwegian-Irish New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic ESC-winners from 1995 Secret Garden feat. Moya Brennan (famed vocalist of Irish Clannad) on vocals. Here is some more information about them.

Secret Garden consists of Rolf Løvland (the Norwegian composer/pianist and Nexus of the duo) and Fionnuala Sherry (Irish violinist) on violin. The duo is based in Norway and has been so from the beginning. With 3-4 million albums sold worldwide they are considered one of the most successful and influential Norwegian groups/musical projects of all time.

Rolf Løvland - born in Kristiansand, Norway in 1955 - was Norway’s perhaps most successful commercial pop-music composer in the 1980s. He wrote many MGP-songs for other artists, including the Norwegian 1985 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) winner “La Det Swinge” performed by Bobbysocks. He received several national music awards for his work. In the early 1990s he decided to try something different, and so he started the musical project called Secret Garden, together with the Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry (born in 1963).

Fionnuala’s violin-playing started at an early age. She graduated with honours from the Music of Trinity College in Dublin. Her professional career started with a 10-year stint as a member of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. She has worked with many musicians (incl. Sinéad O'Connor and Bono). She has also recorded Hollywood film scores with the Irish Film Orchestra. Her instrument of choice is an English John E Betts violin from 1790, with a Hill bow.

With Secret Garden Rolf Løvland wished to make music that was close to his heart: New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic instrumental music. And so the story of Secret Garden had begun.

Secret Garden made history by winning the ESC in 1995 with "Nocturne", an instrumental melody which had 24 words added to the beginning of the song. In the 40-year history of the ESC an instrumental piece had never previously won. It was a piece of music so stylistically removed from the common “ESC format”, that the press stated: "Secret Garden has redefined the Eurovision Song Contest”.

This surprise victory at the ESC was the ultimate showcase that successfully launched their first album “Songs from a Secret Garden”. It was released around the globe, including Europe, USA/Canada, Australia and Asia. This was an historic event for a Norwegian artist/group and record company, who for the first time had produced a worldwide release with sales of more than a million. Many international awards followed, and the album stayed an impressive 2 years (101 weeks) in the Billboard New Age charts in the USA.

“White Stones”, Secret Garden’s 2nd album in 1997, was both a critical and commercial success like its predecessor. It too achieved another maximum stay in the US Billboard New Age charts for 2 years. With this album-release Secret Garden formed a touring ensemble and the start of live concerts around the world.

In 1998 Barbra Streisand performed Secret Garden’s song “Heartstrings” (with newly written lyrics for her) at her wedding to James Brolin. She later recorded the song herself.

In 1999 Secret Garden released their third album, “Dawn of a New Century”, as well as a live concert-dvd. The album included three vocal tracks among many instrumentals. It became another commercial success and once again Secret Garden toured extensively in Asia, Europe, South America and the USA.

In 2000 a Best Of-album called ”Dreamcatcher” was released in certain territories.

Secret Garden: Discography

Songs from a Secret Garden (1996)
White Stones (1997)
Dawn of a New Century (1999)
Dreamcatcher: Best of Secret Garden (2000/2001)
Once in a Red Moon (2002)
Earthsongs (2005)
Inside I'm Singing (2007)
Winter Poem (November 2011)

Secret Garden’s next album, ”Once in a Red Moon”, was released in 2002. It contained the very popular song and hit “You Raise Me Up”, performed by the Irish singer Brian Kennedy, with lyrics by Brendan Graham. “You Raise Me Up” went on to be recorded in over 40 versions worldwide (incl. a notable cover by US artist Josh Groban) with translations of the song into Spanish, Italian, French and more. The album topped the charts in Norway and Ireland and the US New Age Billboard chart.

In 2005 Secret Garden released the album called “Earthsongs”. With this album they continued their New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic musical tradition. And two years later, in 2007, then came the album “Inside I’m Singing”, which differed from their earlier albums in that this time all the songs were with vocals. The album had chart success and popularity and it reached out to a wider musical audience.

Then in 2010 Secret Garden (Rolf Løvland) was commisioned to compose a “Suite” and a song called “Powered By Nature” for the Norway Pavillion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. It was a great success. Also in 2010 Fionnuala Sherry released her solo debut album entitled “Songs From Before”, to critical acclaim. She had wanted for a long time to record some of the beautiful traditional Irish songs that she grew up with and finally she got the chance.

And now recently, in November 2011, Secret Garden’s latest album called “Winter Poem” was released. The album included mostly instrumental songs (as has been their tradition), and many beautiful ones at that, but also a couple of beautiful songs with vocals. One of these was the first radio-single taken from the album, the song “The Dream” which featured the Irish vocalist Moya Brennan (of Clannad fame) on vocals. This is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC December 2011.

In a recent interview Rolf Løvland said the following about the new album and its title:

”The album has been given the title “Winter Poem”. Winter, with Nature's transformation and beautiful magic, is a time for emotion and contemplative thought. Many of these feelings have been a source of inspiration for the music. Scandinavia's winter is shrouded in darkness.. I think the Norwegian Nature and the special atmosphere in Winter creates a kind of need in me to feel my emotions and to express myself.. We truly hope that “Winter Poem” can contribute light and warmth to our listeners during the cold, dark winter evenings - and to those living in warmer climes, light and warmth through cold and dark times”.

Moya Brennan, born Máire Ní Bhraonáin (in 1952), also known as Máire Brennan, is an Irish folk singer, songwriter, harpist, and philanthropist who began performing professionally in 1970, when her musically oriented family formed the now famous band/group Clannad (which took a hiatus in 1996). Moya (elder sister of Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, better known as the successful singer Enya) is now widely considered as the "First Lady of Celtic Music". She released her first solo album in 1992 called “Máire”, a successful venture. “Misty Eyed Adventures” followed three years later. In 1998 she signed with Word Records and released “Perfect Time”, and “Whisper to the Wild Water” a year later. The album was nominated in the Grammy Awards of 2001 for Best New Age Album.

Moya Brennan’s music is usually classified as New Age or Celtic. She accepts the Celtic label, but has at times indicated a slight discomfort with being seen as "New Age" since much of her music is strongly Christian. In total she has recorded 25 albums, and has sold 20 million records. She has also recorded with many world-famous musicians and has provided music for several soundtracks (including that of ‘Titanic’ and ‘King Arthur’). Moya Brennan’s ethereal voice features on Secret Garden’s latest song “The Dream”, and she provides beautiful vocals. Secret Garden have wanted to work together with Moya Brennan for some time and are delighted that it was now possible to make this “Dream” come true.

Our entry for FSC December, “The Dream”, is alas a beautiful Norwegian-Irish New Age/Classical/Celtic song with Secret Garden feat. Moya Brennan. It is a song that successfully blends Norwegian and Celtic musical culture through melody, lyrics and instrumentation. We are happy to enter Secret Garden feat. Moya Brennan in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for December! :)

Secret Garden feat. Moya Brennan - The Dream

We sail out in the morning
As the winter turns to spring
Undestined and unknowing
Of what tomorrow brings

Towards the blue horizon
Leaving all we have behind
Our yearning hearts will guide us
To find

A dream we carry with us
And the hopes that we hold
As we rise from the ash
Into gold

We reach for the impossible
As unreal it may seem
Still we sail across the ocean
And follow the dream

The moon and stars above us
Will lead us to the shore
My heart will be my compass
And you will be my north

We forecast stormy weather
When pro and con are moons
But what have we achieved if
We lose

A dream we carry with us
And the hopes that we hold
As we rise from the ash
Into gold

We reach for the impossible
As unreal it may seem
We’ll sail across the ocean
And capture the dream

One day arriving
Beyond the third moon
Where you find me waiting
And I will find you

A dream we carry with us
And the hopes that we hold
As we rise from the ash
Into gold

We reach for the impossible
As unreal it may seem
We will sail across the ocean
And become the dream
