FSC Norway - February 2012 - Atle Pettersen - Shine

lNSBrfM.jpg

Representing Norway in FSC February 2012 is the multi-talented Norwegian 2010 X-Factor Runner-up (2nd placed) singer and songwriter Atle Pettersen. Here is some more information about him.

Atle Pettersen (born in Skien, Norway in 1989) was from an early age interested in music. He sang in the children’s choir Gla’vox and after a trip to Thailand in 2002 to visit impoverished children there the choir released an album called “Sammen” (“Together”) and profits from the CD-sale were given to the children in Thailand. From the age of 13 and onwards Atle also was part-time organist in the church where they sang.

In 2003 Atle Pettersen then took part in Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix Junior with the song “Hekta på brett” which he had written himself. The song was performed on stage together with a friend called Stine Cecilie Hillestad.

Two years later, in 2005, Atle started a Norwegian progressive-metal band called Illusion which was later to be renamed Above Symmetry. Atle sang head vocals for the band and wrote some of their music. They quickly gained popularity and after winning several youth music awards in the years to follow as well as being support-act to more established metal-bands, in 2009 they got a record contract with a German record company and subsequently released their debut-album “Ripples” in early 2010.

In 2006 Atle Pettersen also participated in the Norwegian talent music-show “Kjempesjansen”.

His national breakthrough, however, came after his impressive 2nd place in the Norwegian 2010 X-Factor show on Norwegian TV2. In this show he performed several songs which he had written himself, among them the song “Traces Inside” (co-written with the other members of Above Symmetry) on audition. Atle was mentored in the show by the famous Norwegian singer and songwriter Marion Raven and from the early stages he was very popular. In the end he became Runner-up (2nd placed) to the winner Hans Bollandsås.

Atle released his 1st single called “Light on” in late 2010. The song entered the Norwegian top 10 singles chart, mirroring his popularity especially among younger audiences. In December 2010 he also took part in TV2s ‘Artist Gala’ with the song “Lean On Me” (together with Annsofi Pettersen and Mohamed Abdi Farah). A highlight for Atle was perhaps his guest-appearance with the symphonic power metal band Kamelot in spring 2011.

In June 2011 Atle Pettersen released the 1st single from his upcoming solo-album, a catchy melodious pop-song called “Shine”, which is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC February 2012.

In autumn 2011 a 2nd single from the album was released, called “Save me”.

Atle Pettersen: Discography (solo-artist)

2010 Light on (single)
2011 Shine (single, June 2011)
2011 Save me (single, autumn 2011)
2011 Based on a true story (album, November 2011)

The album itself, called “Based on a true story”, was released in November 2011. It saw average reviews but commercial success. The aforementioned singles had received radio-play in the months before the album-release and the album reached an impressive 3rd place in the Norwegian albums chart. With the album Atle showed that his heart lies with pop and rock music, combining the two with success in several of his songs.

Atle Pettersen is a multi-talented person, something he showed when he won the Norwegian “Skal vi danse” (dance-show for national pop- and mediastars) TV2-show in 2011 together with Marianne Sandaker. In late 2011 Atle, with his distinct looks, also became the new front figure for the Italian trademark ‘Police’ advertisements in Norway. There is little doubt that we will hear more from this talented artist and personality in the years to come.

Our entry for FSC February 2012, “Shine”, is alas a catchy pop-song performed with energy and style by Atle Pettersen. His rock-style vocals and voice give this melodious retro-styled pop-number an extra quality. We are happy to enter Atle Pettersen in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for February! :)

Atle Pettersen - Shine

Hard times, don't let them push you down
Although they want you dead or alive
Earth is shaking, tumbling
Hearts are breaking
Wanted dead or alive
It's on - no place to hide!

Shine
No rain will ever break us down
Now is the time, now is the time
Make your way, ‘cause all you'll see is
Shining lights for you

Too many tried to bring me down
I don't care if they are dead or alive
Ice cold spaces, filled with empty faces
Seems to be what is right
But who are they to decide!

Shine
No rain will ever break us down
Now is the time, now is the time
Make your way, ‘cause all you'll see is
Shining lights for you

Now it's all so clear
Yesterday was when I didn't know
What was then, ‘gonna leave it all behind
How am I supposed to be it all, it all?

Shine
No rain will ever break us down
Now is the time, now is the time
Make your way, ‘cause all you'll see is
Shining lights for you

Shine
No rain will ever break us down
Now is the time, now is the time
Make your way, ‘cause all you'll see is
Shining lights for you

Shine
No rain will ever break us down

FSC Norway - March 2012 - Marit Larsen - Don’t Move

W3z3lvX.png

Representing Norway in FSC March 2012 is the talented Norwegian singer and songwriter Marit Larsen. Here is some more information about her.

Marit Elisabeth Larsen (most often just called Marit Larsen) was born on 1st July 1983 in Lørenskog just outside of Oslo, Norway. Her parents were musicians (her mother a pianist, her father playing the cello in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra) and this was also to be the path for Marit.

In her childhood years she played in musicals and she subsequently gained international fame during her teenage years as a member of the pop duo M2M with her childhood friend Marion Raven (former FSC-participant for Norway). Recognizable as the lighter-haired of the two musicians, Larsen played the guitar and did half of the vocals and songwriting.

After touring the world and producing two albums with hits such as "Don't Say You Love Me", "Mirror Mirror", and "Everything", M2M was broken up by Atlantic Records in September 2002.

After the breakup of M2M, Marit took time off to reflect on her career. Fan interest was re-ignited in 2004 and early 2005, as Marit made several appearances in Norway, showing off a darker-haired image and new music with increased instrumental and lyrical scope.

In the autumn of 2005, she recorded her debut solo-album, "Under The Surface" with her new record label, EMI. The first single off this album, "Don't Save Me", an infectiously catchy pop-number with ABBA piano-riffs, made radio impact in January 2006, and quickly climbed into the top 10 on many Norwegian charts and playlists. After the physical single release on February 6th 2006, "Don't Save Me" jumped to nr 1 on the official Norwegian singles chart in its second week of availability, and then spent 5 consecutive weeks in the top spot.

The second single released from the album in May 2006 was the title-track "Under The Surface", a beautiful ballad in waltz-beat with string arrangements and meaningful lyrics. Within a month the single became among the most widely played tracks on Norwegian radio, entering the top 10 and reaching a 6th place in the Norwegian singles charts in June.

The album "Under The Surface" released in March 2006 contained 11 songs (of some variety in style and scope, touching on genres such as country, roots, folk and pop), most of which were written individually by Marit herself. Touted as "what many people considered to be the most eagerly awaited album of 2006" (according to Norwegian magazine Plan B), the album received much critical acclaim and debuted at nr 3 on the sales chart in Norway, subsequently achieving Gold status.

Marit began a Norwegian club tour in late April, headlining concerts for the first time in her career, and continued playing concerts and taking part in music festivals all across Norway during the summer and autumn of 2006 and also, though to a somewhat lesser extent, in 2007.

In early 2008 she started writing some new songs for a forthcoming album and on 11th August 2008 one of these new songs, a melody called "If A Song Could Get Me You", was released to Norwegian radio. The song quickly became a huge radio-success and fan-favourite and soon topped the Norwegian singles-chart. It subsequently became a chart-hit in several European countries like Germany and Austria. It was the first taste of her new album “The Chase”, which was finally released on Virgin Music Record Label 13th October 2008.

The album, which included 10 songs in her own pop/roots/folk/singer-songwriter style, received very good reviews in the national press. A second radio-single from the album called “I’ve Heard Your Lovesongs” was released a short while before the album-release itself in October and it too received a fair amount of radioplay.

Marit Larsen: Album Discography (solo-artist)

Under the Surface (2006)
The Chase (2008)
Spark (November 2011)

The next few years Marit went on national and international concert tours - and started work on her next album. In early 2011 she released a couple of songs in her native language, Norwegian - and then in autumn of 2011 came the 1st single “Coming Home” from her forthcoming album “Spark”. It was followed by the album itself - filled with songs in her various musical styles (roots/pop/singer-songwriter/folk), which received very good critical reviews - in November 2011. A second single taken from the album, a digital single called “Don’t Move”, was released in January 2012 and this is the song that we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC March 2012.

Marit Larsen is one of Norway’s most respected and well liked singers and songwriters. There is a certain quality and uniqueness in her musical work, even if she finds inspiration many places in the musical world, and we will without doubt hear more from this talented Norwegian artist in the years to come.

Our entry for FSC March 2012, “Don’t Move”, is alas a melodious quality piano-accompanied uptempo pop-song by Marit Larsen. The song has intricate but catchy harmonies/arrangements and ‘bridges’, making good use of the piano - in almost ABBA-style piano-riffs - in typical Marit Larsen fashion, with matching interesting lyrics. It makes for a joyous and exciting musical experience. We are happy to enter Marit Larsen in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for March! :)

Marit Larsen - Don’t Move

Such a bad day for good weather
Right on time to miss the train
I just tied my shoes together
Dropped an earring down the drain

As the crowd goes rushing by
Suddenly he’s right before my eyes

It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it

It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it

In the green eyes of a stranger
Is someone I’ve known all along
There’s safety in his danger
He’s all of my unwritten songs

The platform fades and I go still
Face to face, I know I will

It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it

It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move

Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it

You gotta feel it to know
You gotta know it to give
You gotta give and let go

It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it

It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move

It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it

It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move

Don’t move, don’t move
Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it

Such a bad day for good weather
Right on time to miss the train

FSC Norway - April 2012 - Martine Lund Hoel - Crystals Are Falling

Rgfflq3.png

Representing Norway in FSC April 2012 is the talented Norwegian Folk-pop artist, musician, composer and singer Martine Lund Hoel. Here is some more information about her.

Martíne Lund Hoel, born in 1982, is an acclaimed Norwegian Folk-pop artist, musician, Hardingfiddle player and composer who has been on musical stages around the world with her own material for over a decade. She also delivers compositions to a huge number of ceremonial occasions.

Martíne composes what many call ‘Folk-pop with world-music references’. There are hints and pieces from several cultures and traditions in her musical expression. In her stage appearances, with her heritage close to heart, beside her Folk-pop inspired tunes she also travels through a multi-genre landscape of progressiv rock, intense Balkan rhythms, dusty American bluegrass and lyrical violin pieces.

Her concerts are often performed together with her faithful guitarist and pianist Nils Jørgen Nygaard, in a duo, but when the occasion allows it, she appears with her entire band.

Martine Lund Hoel: Discography

Hidden Shore (Album - 2008)
Distant Call (Album [with Nils Jørgen Nygaard] - 2009)
Spirits from Norway (Album - 2011)
Mighty Moon (Digital Single [with Knut Anders Sørum] - April 2011)
Crystals Are Falling (Digital Single - October 2011)

Though she has played and performed on stage - also internationally, several places in Europe - for many years, she released her 1st album in 2008. It was called “Hidden Shore”. In 2009 she released an album together with Nils Jørgen Nygaard called “Distant Call”. For this album Martine used the name Mani Luny. Her most recent album came in spring 2011. It was called “Spirits from Norway”. The album included the song “Mighty Moon”, released as a digital single in April 2011, where she sang a duet with the Norwegian artist Knut Anders Sørum. In October 2011 she released another digital single called “Crystals Are Falling”. This was a separate recording, a song which was not found on her album. “Crystals Are Falling” is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC April 2012.

Martine Lund Hoel is one of Norway’s most respected and talented Folk-pop musicians. She plays the Norwegian Hardingfele (Hardingfiddle) very proficiently, so much so that she is often hired to play together with other Norwegian artists, and is not afraid to experiment with her music. She sings as well on some of her songs and enjoys fully the music she creates. We will without doubt hear more from this talented Norwegian Folk-pop artist and musician in the years to come.

Our entry for FSC April 2012, “Crystals Are Falling”, is alas an exciting and mystical Norwegian Folk-pop song, written by Martine herself, with dramatic Hardingfele and piano harmonies and nice vocals. It is a song distinct in style and motion, a song that paints a picture in the mind of Norwegian snow-crystals falling over a beautiful winter landscape. We are happy to enter Martine Lund Hoel in the FSC for Norway.

Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for April! :)

Martine Lund Hoel - Crystals Are Falling

Crystals are falling, from heaven today
Nights they’ll embrace you when you were away
White is the snowfall and white is the soul
I will be smiling when you soon come home

Memory hidden, a truth when we sleep
Over the starlight, you are in the deep
Break through the twilight and you need to go
I will be smiling when you soon come home

How we are changing like water from ice
How we’re returning like rain from the clouds
How we’ll be rising like steam from the lakes
Always reforming, I feel how it changed

I will be smiling when I soon come home

Frozen in silence, a curse they can’t see
I am upbearing one last time for me
I see that you’re fading when our own light grows
I will be smiling when you soon come home

How we are changing like water from ice
How we’re returning like rain from the clouds
How we’ll be rising like steam from the lakes
Always reforming, I feel how it changed

I will be smiling when I soon come home

How we are changing like water from ice
How we’re returning like rain from the clouds
How we’ll be rising like steam from the lakes
Always reforming, I feel how it changed

I will be smiling when you soon come home
I will be smiling when you soon come home

FSC Norway - May 2012 - Secret Garden - Lament For A Frozen Flower

bgFamNm.jpg

Representing Norway in May 2012, and for the 2nd time in the FSC, is the Norwegian-Irish New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic ESC-winners from 1995 Secret Garden. Here is some more information about them.

Secret Garden consists of Rolf Løvland (the Norwegian composer/pianist and Nexus of the duo) and Fionnuala Sherry (Irish violinist) on violin. The duo is based in Norway and has been so from the beginning. With 3-4 million albums sold worldwide they are considered one of the most successful and influential Norwegian groups/musical projects of all time.

Rolf Løvland - born in Kristiansand, Norway in 1955 - was Norway’s perhaps most successful commercial pop-music composer in the 1980s. He wrote many MGP-songs for other artists, including the Norwegian 1985 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) winner “La Det Swinge” performed by Bobbysocks. He received several national music awards for his work. In the early 1990s he decided to try something different, and so he started the musical project called Secret Garden, together with the Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry (born in 1963).

Fionnuala’s violin-playing started at an early age. She graduated with honours from the Music of Trinity College in Dublin. Her professional career started with a 10-year stint as a member of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. She has worked with many musicians (incl. Sinéad O'Connor and Bono). She has also recorded Hollywood film scores with the Irish Film Orchestra. Her instrument of choice is an English John E Betts violin from 1790, with a Hill bow.

With Secret Garden Rolf Løvland wished to make music that was close to his heart: New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic instrumental music. And so the story of Secret Garden had begun.

Secret Garden made history by winning the ESC in 1995 with "Nocturne", an instrumental melody which had 24 words added to the beginning of the song. In the 40-year history of the ESC an instrumental piece had never previously won. It was a piece of music so stylistically removed from the common “ESC format”, that the press stated: "Secret Garden has redefined the Eurovision Song Contest”.

This surprise victory at the ESC was the ultimate showcase that successfully launched their first album “Songs from a Secret Garden”. It was released around the globe, including Europe, USA/Canada, Australia and Asia. This was an historic event for a Norwegian artist/group and record company, who for the first time had produced a worldwide release with sales of more than a million. Many international awards followed, and the album stayed an impressive 2 years (101 weeks) in the Billboard New Age charts in the USA.

“White Stones”, Secret Garden’s 2nd album in 1997, was both a critical and commercial success like its predecessor. It too achieved another maximum stay in the US Billboard New Age charts for 2 years. With this album-release Secret Garden formed a touring ensemble and the start of live concerts around the world.

In 1998 Barbra Streisand performed Secret Garden’s song “Heartstrings” (with newly written lyrics for her) at her wedding to James Brolin. She later recorded the song herself.

In 1999 Secret Garden released their third album, “Dawn of a New Century”, as well as a live concert-dvd. The album included three vocal tracks among many instrumentals. It became another commercial success and once again Secret Garden toured extensively in Asia, Europe, South America and the USA.

In 2000 a Best Of-album called ”Dreamcatcher” was released in certain territories.

Secret Garden: Discography

Songs from a Secret Garden (1996)
White Stones (1997)
Dawn of a New Century (1999)
Dreamcatcher: Best of Secret Garden (2000/2001)
Once in a Red Moon (2002)
Earthsongs (2005)
Inside I'm Singing (2007)
Winter Poem (November 2011)

Secret Garden’s next album, ”Once in a Red Moon”, was released in 2002. It contained the very popular song and hit “You Raise Me Up”, performed by the Irish singer Brian Kennedy, with lyrics by Brendan Graham. “You Raise Me Up” went on to be recorded in over 40 versions worldwide (incl. a notable cover by US artist Josh Groban) with translations of the song into Spanish, Italian, French and more. The album topped the charts in Norway and Ireland and the US New Age Billboard chart.

In 2005 Secret Garden released the album called “Earthsongs”. With this album they continued their New Age/Neo-Classical/Celtic musical tradition. And two years later, in 2007, then came the album “Inside I’m Singing”, which differed from their earlier albums in that this time all the songs were with vocals. The album had chart success and popularity and it reached out to a wider musical audience.

Then in 2010 Secret Garden (Rolf Løvland) was commisioned to compose a “Suite” and a song called “Powered By Nature” for the Norway Pavillion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. It was a great success. Also in 2010 Fionnuala Sherry released her solo debut album entitled “Songs From Before”, to critical acclaim. She had wanted for a long time to record some of the beautiful traditional Irish songs that she grew up with and finally she got the chance.

In November 2011, Secret Garden’s latest album called “Winter Poem” was released. The album included mostly instrumental songs (as has been their tradition), and many beautiful ones at that, but also a couple of beautiful songs with vocals. One of these was the first radio-single taken from the album, the song “The Dream” which featured the Irish vocalist Moya Brennan (of Clannad fame) on vocals. This was the Norwegian FSC-entry in December 2011.

For FSC May 2012 we have chosen one of the beautiful instrumental songs from the album, called “Lament For A Frozen Flower”. The violin, the piano and the melancholy sound but also uplifting melody make for a beautiful musical experience.

In a recent interview Rolf Løvland said the following about the new album and its title:

”The album has been given the title “Winter Poem”. Winter, with Nature's transformation and beautiful magic, is a time for emotion and contemplative thought. Many of these feelings have been a source of inspiration for the music. Scandinavia's winter is shrouded in darkness.. I think the Norwegian Nature and the special atmosphere in Winter creates a kind of need in me to feel my emotions and to express myself.. We truly hope that “Winter Poem” can contribute light and warmth to our listeners during the cold, dark winter evenings - and to those living in warmer climes, light and warmth through cold and dark times”.

Our entry for FSC May, “Lament For A Frozen Flower”, is alas a beautiful Norwegian-Irish Neo-Classical instrumental melody. It is a good example of the duo’s more classical instrumental side, which goes hand in hand with their more pop-oriented New Age side which we presented to you last time with Moya Brennan. We are happy to enter Secret Garden for the 2nd time in the FSC for Norway.

We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for May! :)
