FSC March 2012 - Norway
FSC Norway - March 2012 - Marit Larsen - Don’t Move
Representing Norway in FSC March 2012 is the talented Norwegian singer and songwriter Marit Larsen. Here is some more information about her.
Marit Elisabeth Larsen (most often just called Marit Larsen) was born on 1st July 1983 in Lørenskog just outside of Oslo, Norway. Her parents were musicians (her mother a pianist, her father playing the cello in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra) and this was also to be the path for Marit.
In her childhood years she played in musicals and she subsequently gained international fame during her teenage years as a member of the pop duo M2M with her childhood friend Marion Raven (former FSC-participant for Norway). Recognizable as the lighter-haired of the two musicians, Larsen played the guitar and did half of the vocals and songwriting.
After touring the world and producing two albums with hits such as "Don't Say You Love Me", "Mirror Mirror", and "Everything", M2M was broken up by Atlantic Records in September 2002.
After the breakup of M2M, Marit took time off to reflect on her career. Fan interest was re-ignited in 2004 and early 2005, as Marit made several appearances in Norway, showing off a darker-haired image and new music with increased instrumental and lyrical scope.
In the autumn of 2005, she recorded her debut solo-album, "Under The Surface" with her new record label, EMI. The first single off this album, "Don't Save Me", an infectiously catchy pop-number with ABBA piano-riffs, made radio impact in January 2006, and quickly climbed into the top 10 on many Norwegian charts and playlists. After the physical single release on February 6th 2006, "Don't Save Me" jumped to nr 1 on the official Norwegian singles chart in its second week of availability, and then spent 5 consecutive weeks in the top spot.
The second single released from the album in May 2006 was the title-track "Under The Surface", a beautiful ballad in waltz-beat with string arrangements and meaningful lyrics. Within a month the single became among the most widely played tracks on Norwegian radio, entering the top 10 and reaching a 6th place in the Norwegian singles charts in June.
The album "Under The Surface" released in March 2006 contained 11 songs (of some variety in style and scope, touching on genres such as country, roots, folk and pop), most of which were written individually by Marit herself. Touted as "what many people considered to be the most eagerly awaited album of 2006" (according to Norwegian magazine Plan B), the album received much critical acclaim and debuted at nr 3 on the sales chart in Norway, subsequently achieving Gold status.
Marit began a Norwegian club tour in late April, headlining concerts for the first time in her career, and continued playing concerts and taking part in music festivals all across Norway during the summer and autumn of 2006 and also, though to a somewhat lesser extent, in 2007.
In early 2008 she started writing some new songs for a forthcoming album and on 11th August 2008 one of these new songs, a melody called "If A Song Could Get Me You", was released to Norwegian radio. The song quickly became a huge radio-success and fan-favourite and soon topped the Norwegian singles-chart. It subsequently became a chart-hit in several European countries like Germany and Austria. It was the first taste of her new album “The Chase”, which was finally released on Virgin Music Record Label 13th October 2008.
The album, which included 10 songs in her own pop/roots/folk/singer-songwriter style, received very good reviews in the national press. A second radio-single from the album called “I’ve Heard Your Lovesongs” was released a short while before the album-release itself in October and it too received a fair amount of radioplay.
Marit Larsen: Album Discography (solo-artist)
Under the Surface (2006)
The Chase (2008)
Spark (November 2011)
The next few years Marit went on national and international concert tours - and started work on her next album. In early 2011 she released a couple of songs in her native language, Norwegian - and then in autumn of 2011 came the 1st single “Coming Home” from her forthcoming album “Spark”. It was followed by the album itself - filled with songs in her various musical styles (roots/pop/singer-songwriter/folk), which received very good critical reviews - in November 2011. A second single taken from the album, a digital single called “Don’t Move”, was released in January 2012 and this is the song that we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC March 2012.
Marit Larsen is one of Norway’s most respected and well liked singers and songwriters. There is a certain quality and uniqueness in her musical work, even if she finds inspiration many places in the musical world, and we will without doubt hear more from this talented Norwegian artist in the years to come.
Our entry for FSC March 2012, “Don’t Move”, is alas a melodious quality piano-accompanied uptempo pop-song by Marit Larsen. The song has intricate but catchy harmonies/arrangements and ‘bridges’, making good use of the piano - in almost ABBA-style piano-riffs - in typical Marit Larsen fashion, with matching interesting lyrics. It makes for a joyous and exciting musical experience. We are happy to enter Marit Larsen in the FSC for Norway.
Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for March!
Marit Larsen - Don’t Move
Such a bad day for good weather
Right on time to miss the train
I just tied my shoes together
Dropped an earring down the drain
As the crowd goes rushing by
Suddenly he’s right before my eyes
It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it
It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it
In the green eyes of a stranger
Is someone I’ve known all along
There’s safety in his danger
He’s all of my unwritten songs
The platform fades and I go still
Face to face, I know I will
It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it
It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move
Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it
You gotta feel it to know
You gotta know it to give
You gotta give and let go
It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it
It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move
It’s more than you’re craving
It’s staring you down
Turn around
Don’t move ‘till you believe it
It’s you beyond saving
Feeling the pull
It’s beautiful
Don’t move, don’t move
Don’t move, don’t move
Don’t move
Don’t move ‘till you see it
Such a bad day for good weather
Right on time to miss the train
