FSC Norway - April 2011 - Marion Raven - Found Someone
Representing Norway in April 2011 is Marion Raven, one of Norway’s most talented pop-rock singer/songwriters. Here is some more information about her.
Marion Raven is the international artist-name of Norwegian pop-rock singer/songwriter Marion Elise Ravn (born on May 25th 1984 outside of Oslo, Norway). Her surname is of Norse origin, with Ravn meaning Raven, which she adopted as her artist/stage-name as well as for her trademark raven logo. She started singing at an early age and went to be a part of a local choir at the age of 7. She also started playing the piano at an early age. From the age of 9 onwards she acted in stage-musicals in Norway (“Sound of Music”, “Bugsy Malone” and “The Wizard of Oz”) and from early on it was obvious that she was a very talented young lady.
Then in 1995, Marion’s father arranged for her to make a demo in a studio in Oslo, together with her childhood friend, Marit Larsen. The duo got a record deal with EMI Norway and formed the duo/group M2M. A year later, they produced a popular children’s album. M2M was nominated for the Norwegian Grammy, Spellemannprisen, the following year.
In 1998, M2M started recording pop-demos in English and struck a record deal with Atlantic Records after auditioning with Marion on the keyboard and Marit on the guitar. The two collaborated with many songwriters from around the world and produced their multi-platinum candy-pop debut album “Shades of Purple” which was released in 2000. The lead single "Don't Say You Love Me" featured on the soundtrack of the first Pokémon movie. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 72, selling 39,000 units in a week, according to SoundScan. Their second album called “The Big Room” was released in 2002. The album was more mature and less pop-oriented in sound. The first single from the album was the song “Everything”. The album became more critically acclaimed but less commercially successful than their first album. As a result of this their record company support slowly dwindled. Not long after M2M disbanded in September 2002.
Marion Raven was subsequently offered a million dollar recording contract with Atlantic Records and started a new career as a solo-artist and songwriter. Upon signing her deal with Atlantic Records, Marion Raven set about recording her debut-album, and worked with Swedish songwriters/producers Max Martin and Rami, as well as Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband Raine Maida from 2003 to 2005. According to some sources her record company was not initially confident of Raven's switch to a more rock-oriented image (pop-rock) and a darker, more personal style of songwriting. The resulting 14-track list, including 2 bonus tracks, cultivated a more manufactured rock/pop sound and was titled ”Here I Am”. The album, released in Norway in August 2005, saw Raven's transformation from the candy-pop music of M2M to a more angsty, pop/rock-oriented singer. The album was also released in Asia. It was well-received, with popular singles like “Break You”, “End of Me” and the title-track “Here I Am”, and saw commercial success.
In early 2006, however, it was announced that Marion Raven had been released from her contract with Atlantic Records due to "artistic differences". Soon after this, she announced that she was to record and release her U.S. debut-album under the indie label Eleven Seven Music, created by her management company 10th Street Entertainment. An EP called “Heads Will Roll” was released on October 31st 2006. The EP was the result of a collaboration of several musical artists and featured what Marion herself called “fun rock songs”. There was some controversy over the music-video to the song “Heads Will Roll”, since it featured scenes of a half-naked Marion Raven on top of ten naked women crammed into a futuristic box. A censored version (without nudity) of the video was made available for daytime airplay on music video channels.
In 2007 Marion Raven released the album “Set Me Free”. The album incorporated a mixture of fresh tracks and previously released tracks, with some revised versions from her Asian and Scandinavian debut-album “Here I Am”. She also played the piano, acoustic and electric guitars on the record. “Set Me Free” headlined Raven's inclination to harder pop-rocking songs and a darker lyrical scope. “Falling Away” was the first single from the album. Raven went on a tour in Europe to promote the album.
Whilst working with Desmond Child on new songs for the “Set Me Free”-album, Raven met Meat Loaf who was also working with Desmond Child on his latest album called “Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose”. Desmond Child suggested that Raven join Meat Loaf on a duet for the song "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," a song written by Jim Steinman for his Pandora's Box album, “Original Sin” (1989), and later covered by Celine Dion in 1996. The song was picked as the first single from the album in October 2006. It became Raven's first UK Top 10 single, and second charting single in Britain. In late February 2007, Raven joined Meat Loaf on an extensive Canada and U.S. tour.
In 2008 Marion Raven started writing songs for a new album, her third solo-album. For different reasons the album-release was pushed back several times, and the latest information indicates that the album - which Marion herself claims will take her sound in a more “piano-rock” directions - will finally see a release in the summer of 2011. Meanwhile, Marion Raven has released 2 digital singles that are expected to be included on the forthcoming album. The first single called “Flesh And Bone”, an uptempo pop-rock number, was released in September 2010 to mixed reviews. A second single called “Found Someone”, a piano-ballad, was released in December 2010 and this song, which was even better received and which spent some time on the iTunes chart, is the song we have chosen as the Norwegian entry here in FSC April 2011.
Besides working on her new album, Marion Raven has taken part as one of the judges in the panel of the most recent Norwegian 2010 X-Factor competition. She performed her song “Found Someone” during the finals in December 2010, playing the piano and singing. She has also written songs for other artists and writes many of her own songs. Her talent as a songwriter matches her vocal abilities and stage presence, she is a multi-talented pop-artist and songwriter from whom we will without doubt hear more from in the coming years.
Our entry for FSC April, “Found Someone”, is alas a beautiful piano-ballad performed and sung by Marion Raven. The song has a beautiful melody and beautiful lyrics, a quality piece of music. We are happy to enter Marion Raven in the FSC for Norway. This entry is also different in style from our past months entries and we are glad to show the diversity of Norwegian music.
Below are the English lyrics for the song. We hope you’ll enjoy the Norwegian entry for April!
Marion Raven - Found Someone
Restart my heart
It is falling apart
The memories are gone
Yeah, it´s really been that long
But to count those days on my hand
It´d be like counting grains of sand
But I found someone to follow
Follow my sorrow
His love he will lend
A dime an hour for pretend
Found someone to follow
His heart he lets me borrow
I wake up and you´re gone
But I found someone
Heaven and the sky
Here and now I defy
You to come to me
Don´t care if you don´t agree
To walk the steps to get where you are
I´d be like counting every star
But I found someone to follow
Follow my sorrow
His love he will lend
A dime an hour for pretend
Found someone to follow
His heart he lets me borrow
I wake up and you´re gone
But I found someone
Will it come to this
When I stop to miss
I want him to stay
God, I long for that day
Found someone to follow
Follow my sorrow
His love he will lend
A dime an hour for pretend
Found someone to follow
His heart he lets me borrow
I wake up and you´re gone
But I found someone
I wake up and you´re gone
But I found someone
-M
