I don't understand why they kicked up a big fuss. They are one of the most successful Eurovision countries.

Enlighten me, what did they kick a fuss up about? lol

Yet another shock: Turkey withdraws from Eurovision Song Contest 2013 | Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö - EuroVisionary

Unlike the other withdrawn countries, Turkey's reason is not financial. TRT stated that, this is a reaction to the injustice of the competition, like a "boycott". In the explanation they made, TRT claimed that the contest was unfair due to the latest rule in the voting system; the 50-50 combination of jury voting and televoting. It is thought that the involvement of jury had a downstream effect on Turkey's points. The broadcaster also finds the "big 5 direct qualifiers" unfair.

Thinking about it, they actually did have a point. This years contest was unfair... I doubt that Turkey would have suffered much though. Non of the big hitters did this year.

Hm, I think rather there are 2 possibilities:

1) Turkey had some internal quarrels inside EBU that led them to protest drastically by withdrawal. Not the lame issues they stated though. Nothing stops them from re enter the competition without much complications.

2) More like I hinted in my trolling. The withdrawal is more of a cultural policy change initiated by the government. Turkey will not come back unless there's shift in power, which may very well take years.

They were complaining they aren't doing well? Are they for real? They came in the top every year since 2007 with their worst placing since 1993 being 16th, which occured 3 times the last being 2002 and have only failed to quailify once. Obviously winning means everything there. LalehForWD is right, it is a lame excuse and obviously more too it than meets the eye. I don't know how TRT can say they are upset with how the new system makes them worse off.

I don't think first option has truth.

EBU - Avrupa Yay

This page is TRT's official EBU membership page and it has informations about EBU. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I think the second option is the way turth or at least has piece of truth. Unlike Turkish public, TRT made a decision by themselves and withdrew from the contest. Fans in Turkey were sad and whatever TRT tries to do, no one knows the actual reason of that crap. No one believes that saids TRT made to withdraw and TRT knows that EBU won't change the system of voting and traditional Pre-Qualifing system so they keep saying if system changes than they will be back again. Selfish acting TRT won't give a decision to comeback Eurovision and this is just their own decision, they don't even bother ask to public with an online poll or smth. So I want to say that I want Turkey back but not with TRT, some other private channel maybe. And afterall, (TRT is a government channel so until the government changes) Turkey will not be back atleast for a long time. If we knew the actual reason then we would make theories about future more certainly.

Luxembourg has opted out for 2014 due to costs, but has not ruled out returning in the future

Lol do they genuinely think they could ever win ? Its all against them, They're a western nation that don't usually do that well, They haven't been in in a long time so they're aren't really in a voting bloc ( the only country to give them points every year would be Belgium and Netherlands), They are a micronation which none of whom have ever qualified, and the biggest one; they're a Benelux country, As well all know very well, These very rarely qualify nowadays. Not to say they can't at least try. Who knows Luxemburg could be a 2nd Azerbaijan and send generic cliche songs imported from Sweden?

I suggest they start with a template song by Peter Boström (see picture below - the bold one that is) and a local linguist to translate the lyrics into Lëtzebuergesch. A standard electropop template would do the trick BMO.

And for the rest of us, a beginning: "Ech lauschtere gäre Musik"

lol, Luxembourgs Swedish import. Despite this i still think they will not qualify often and when they do not, do very well.

I don't like Luxembourg's justification for not participating. They always say they don't want to participate because if they win they would hardly be able to host it.
That is the worst justification ever. Even if they win, it's not mandatory for them to host it.

I don't want to say anything until I see the songs that Luxembourg sends for Eurovision. So I don't think we should say something good or bad until we see what kind of songs they send. For example Eastern Europe sends very succesfull songs, why not Luxembourg to be one of them.

Nobody is saying that they'll send bad songs. We're saying that their justification for not participating is stupid.

The Luxemburgers seem to be watching ESC though. German or French channels perhaps? With a prepaid mobile SIM card e.g. bought in Germany, they can even vote I think. Didn't Emmelie de Forest top their itunes?

As I understand the Luxemburg broadcaster is RTL, one of the biggest media companies in Europe? Financial reasons?
Or did I miss something?

RTL said that only winning contest, could make a trouble. Luxembourg is financially able to participate.

Actually, are they? When it comes to ESC it's about the wealth of the broadcaster and how willing the state is to finance it all.

Apparently there's also a lack of support for it now in Luxembourg, with RTL preferring to carry on with their own talent shows and such.

I read here: Ukraine: NTU most likely to participate in Eurovision 2014 | esctoday.com | your daily eurovision centre That Ukraine taking party is likely going to happen. So it looks like them withdrawing because of finance reasons and a debt racking up with the EBU is not as bad as first seems.

As expected. I would be very surprised if Ukraine withdrew, I mean NTU is the channel that made a new NF in just a week time a couple of years ago, they also got fined by EBU atleast at one occasion and even during the year when Ukrainian economy fell with almost 20%, NTU still entered ESC. After the top. 3 in 2013, their best position since 2008, I would be really surprised if they'd suddenly withdraw.

Luxembourg has some solid music industry though, unlike rest of microstates of Europe.

I don't think so. Eurovision songs top the charts there after May. They have more interest than many participating countries.
They even had a sitcom whose main theme was eurovision.
