A dramatic ballad performed by a duet (woman with green eyes, man with beard), competing in 8th place of 2nd Semifinal.

As great as :sk: 2009 was, this one is far more accessible.

They have to prove it on stage. ;)

Let´s hope they will.

I actually quite like the Slovak song (maybe because I´m a fan of musicals and chansons and all "dramatic" kinds of songs), but I strongly dislike its presentation and I was not surprised at all that it didn´t succeed. Not only because the singers - with all respect - were unimpressive. If the act is presented as a dramatic situation, then it´s really crucial to be sure that audience will understand its meaning. Which was impossible thanks to Slovak lyrics, messy staging and overall "I am not actor and that´s why I have no idea how to effectively express something by my body language" feeling of their performance.

I believe that in all of these aspects, Hope Never Dies have better chances. It is sung in English (Marta) and language very similar to English (Václav), they both are half-singers/half-actors, old and experienced enough to know where their singing limits are, how to communicate with wide and distant audience and even if we don´t know how the staging will look like, I believe they will keep in minds that "less is more" in case of song like this.

Believe me that I am far from being over-optimistic (in fact, I am little bit paraNoid) and I try my best to prepare myself for "no qualificiation again" situation, but if I am sure about something, then it is that Marta and Václav have much stronger voices, personal charisma and sense of dramatic tension on stage than had the unfortunate Slovak duo. Especially Václav:

I liked Slovakia 2009 too but the performance was a bit underwhelming.
I like Hope Never Dies but the semi-final is very strong and it'll be hard for the Czech Republic to qualify. If they were on the first semi-final it'd be much easier.
Still hope never dies, and I think a 7th-10th place is possible. I wouldn't mind the Czech Republic to qualify :)

:sk: 2009 and our song this year are, despite both being dramatic ballads and duets, completely different. Nela's high screeching probably ruined any chances Slovakia had that year.

It took me a while to like this one. Václav's voice took me ages to get used to. I'm still not sure I like it (and I am not sure what I don't like about it!) but the song has finally won me over!

In case anybody is interested, I translated another interview, this time with Marta Jandová. It´s from 2010 and she talks about her band Die Happy, her relationship with German pop singer Sasha and her (then recent) job as a jury member in Czecho-Slovak talent show.

I love this song and you can be sure I'm gonna vote for it. I would love to see a song from the Czech Republic scoring well.
My maternal grandparents are from the Czech Republic (well, they were Sudeten Germans back then, my grandma is born in Romania actually and immigrated) and I have always felt connected to Czechia somehow. Unfortunately I didn't like any of the past songs you sent but this year you really have a GREAT song.

Václav was on TV today. In TýTý awards show (TV viewers´ awards for most popular local TV actors, singers, hosts etc.), he sang "In the ghetto" and host of the ceremony Karel Šíp mentioned that Václav is our Eurovision representative, without the usual malicious jokes.

On a side note, the award for the best male singer and also for the "absolute winner" (the winner with the largest number of votes) went to Karel Gott, as every year. The most popular female singer was Lucie Vondráčková, who was not there, because she lives in Montreal.

EDIT: the video was removed.

Not Václav & Marta related, but interesting:

JOHNNY BLUE: RALPH SIEGEL’S MUSICAL PREMIERES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

"Fancy a very Eurovisiony night out at the theatre? Do you happen to live near Brno, Czech Republic? Then lucky you! Ralph Siegel’s new musical “Johnny Blue” premiered in the Czech city last week and it was a great success. And how could it not? It features 90% of his Eurovision entries."

"Around 700 people filled Brno’s Mestské Divadlo theatre on opening night. At the end of the show the public gave a thirteen minute standing ovation. Besides Ralph Siegel, the audience included Dorkas Kiefer, one of the members of MeKaDo (Germany 1994) and Valentina Monetta, the Sanmarinese diva with whom Siegel teamed up in 2012, 2013 and 2014."

Ritararita Oh it's surprising that the songs are in Czech!? But isn't it random that his musical takes place in Czech Republic?

It actually IS a Czech musical (or more precisely a vaudeville, since already existing melodies were used). I know it may seem comical, but it is exactly as nofuxCZ says - the Czech Republic really is a "promised land" for musical theatre of any kind and that´s probably why Ralph Siegel picked a Czech libretist and director to do it - he must know that no matter how good or bad the result will be, it will be successful in terms of attendance and that will subsequently help to sell the musical to some other countries too. ;)

But even if the musical was originally in German or English, then the lyrics will be Czech in Czech production of it, of course. I never heard about any foreign musical or operetta played in Czech theatre in its original language (that´s usual only for operas). Is it different in France? And if so, are French people interested in it? :)

Well, now that makes sense to me. I didn't know your country was so prone to musicals.
I'm not into musicals myself so I wouldn't be able to tell you what kind of musicals are being played in France and how many they are. The only ones I'm aware of are the really big productions meant to be played in big concert venues (not in theatres). For that kind of musical, it all really started with Notre Dame De Paris in 1998. The success was so big that we saw lots of other musical afterwards, but we French are (were?) rather picky musically and as time went on, the quality of the music decreased and big musicals started to flop (partly because nowadays emphasis is given to the story it is inspired about while memorable music is what sold musicals in the past). The last one I remember was Robin Hood last year, and we'll have soon "The legend of King Arthur" whose casting and music is already dreadful from I what I heard. :?

At least in Paris, I guess there are quite a lot of "old" musicals on offer like Les Misérables, Broadway shows, etc.. but I'm not a connoisseur so, while I think it does not appeal as many people as in Czech Republic, I'm unsure about how popular that genre is in France.

Yes, we have the same problem here. Everything from Adam and Eve story to old Czech films was already "musicalised", but the music often remains the weakest component of these productions.

The last one I remember was Robin Hood last year

We had Robin Hood musical too (Czech one, not the "Robin des Bois"), starring... guess who? At least we are not completely off topic now. :)

Ritararita At least you had a REAL man with VOCAL abilities playing Robin  (and in addition to that we don't go off-topic :D)

Did Marta play in musicals as well?

Rarely, but it was the original reason why she returned to Prague from Germany. There´s about 60 theaters in Prague, half of them playing musicals, some of them exclusively. So, the consumption of actors is high and somebody remembered that in Germany is a very good Czech singer with decent acting abilities and offered her a role in musical Baron Münchausen, based on old Czech film. Before that, she was already popular in Germany, but virtually unknown here. Later she was in musicals Mona Lisa, Hamlet and also Les Miserábles, where she played madame Thénardier:

Ritararita Thank you for these explanations. ;) One does not really have to worry about the vocal rendition of those two
