Je pourrais aussi te parler en français.
But that is not the point. This is an international forum, so we use a lingua franca to communicate. For the contest, this is not applicable, because the lingua franca there is music. For the diversity of the contest different languages are an enrichment. Most of the lyrics are not THAT important, that you ABSOLUTLY need to understand everything. But if I talk to you here, I need to be sure, you can understand me.

Besides, a counter question is not a good argument to the point I made. If a host country should not use a foreign language for their song, the logic would demand, that Austria has chosen a german song. If an english song is acceptable, than a french one would be too.

English is universal these days and isn't seen as the language of a specific country or region anymore and most countries sing in English anyway, so both German and English seem fine to me. A traditional minority language of Austria might also be fine. Zoe singing in French about things taking place in Paris, however, is rather peculiar as a host entry. Even in English that feels odd due to its ties to Paris. It's not just about understanding the lyrics. If you understand them, it doesn't feel right either.

Her song might have been perfect this year, if France had won last year's contest. If Estonia won this year, I would also consider it odd, if they chose a song in German about a rascal impressing women on Alexanderplatz as their host entry next year. It's weird enough, if other countries sing about the host city or host country but the host singing about another country in a language that most people in the host country itself don't even understand is just silly.

A lot of Austrians speak french - it's the second foreign language taught in schools. So, that's nothing completely alien to Austrians.

I think we all know that French has lost much of its relevance and appeal over the last few decades. I'm not saying that anyone has to approve of this development but it's a fact.
When you say that a lot of Austrians speak French, I beg to differ. Only a small percentage of Austrians has actually learned French in school and most of them as their second foreign language. Among those that learn French, most never truly achieve a high level of proficiency and French is rarely used outside the classroom. A few years after graduating from school, most former French students don't really know that much French anymore.

Of course there are many people that speak French but they are nevertheless only a tiny part of the Austrian population. Everyone that has ever learned French in school seems to claim French skills in polls, so you might be able to come up with a decent percentage depending on the source. Even this percentage only represents a small minatory, though.

Okay, enough (or too much) silly arguing. Unless someone replies to me...

I like how Austria's entry visually connects to Conchita's performance from last year. Once more Austria is represented by a man with a full beard and on top of that the piano is on fire. Too bad this association only works in German.

The much more dominantly taught foreign language in the Austrian education system is Latin, however. I for one would appreciate an Austrian entry entirely sung in Latin. That'd blow my brains out! xcrazy

I would approve provided it's sung in proper classical Latin instead of using whatever pronunciation they teach in Austria's schools.

Well done, Austria! Maybe it's not a hit, but I like a lot and they deserved to win and they did. :D

Really nice song. Definetly among the better ballads this year. I love the raw emotion that it carries + the way it is performed. I think it could sneak into the top 10 in the final.

There is something in this song that i love about it. It's a ballad, though it's different than everything we have this year.

So you mean like, take David Guetta and Avicii and make it incredibly bland?

na, difference is avicii and guetta actually has talent, this fella has none

Comparing Avicii and Guetta with Makemakes, is like comparing Beatles and Elton John with Monz Zelmerlöw....

I guess you got a little confused. Always nice to have the Swedish cavalry around where they smell danger.

This song is very nice. Austria can reach the top ten, but in a 27 song final that will depend on the draw too.
