Instantly bored by the obvious jury wank of the season. Australia keeps serving the same bleak flavour of mainstream radio pop. 4 points

The final version didn't manage to win me round. This is such a bad year for pop.. so much so that I now feel like flying to Lithuania this weekend with a bag of sim cards and a large water pistol to make some threats to secure Paula's win with "1 2 3". Why is everything this year so bland? No spark. Just radio friendly blah. The musical equivalent of shovelware. I'm so bored.

Will someone care to tell me why this is still at 4th place in the odds! I like Finland and even Azerbaijan's entry better than this

I already have been listening to Portugal:lol: It's probably my favourite song at this point. I just want some catchy pops to get excited for too.

Austria is up tomorrow early for some catchy pop and sexy singer... ;-))

2014 I loved, and then 2015 I liked. Zoe was ok. Nathan Trent's song I didn't like but I found his performance charming.

Well, of all the 43 entries in this year's Eurovision, this is indeed one of them.

This is a freaking revelation. Up there with "it's an inspirational song, I guess" on the list of best shade of the year.

It's kind of moot, I suppose, but I agree. Would like to walk back the kind of generous "listenable" praise I provided for the demo version - the second listen was a long 3 minutes to get through.

That's rather average. I suppose this will be Australia's worst result so far. 6 points from me.

Eh, this is... okay. I think I gave my thoughts on the demo version when that was leaked, and this is essentially that but with a few minor improvements, so my opinion hasn't changed too much as a result. I prefer it over the similar offering from Azerbaijan; it's nice enough to listen to; and it's pleasant and upbeat. That said, it kind of makes for a long 3 minutes, and it doesn't bring much new to the table. 5 points for now, though with potential to move either way going forward.

I'm definitely feeling you on the pop part of this (and also the Paula part, of course). While I'm happy with a lot of what's been selected this year, the pop stuff - and especially most of what's been chosen in the last week and a half - has been a bit of a disappointment.

To be honest, I've actually ended up questioning at a few points whether I'm still able to enjoy pop music or whether my tastes have changed too much, until I've gone back to earlier years or other NF songs and found that, no, I do still like pop, but the pop songs being chosen this year just aren't doing it for me. They're largely cut from the same midtempo, stays-the-same-throughout, minimalist mold, with Azerbaijan, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and now Australia being some of the worst offenders there in my eyes (I can forgive the likes of Finland and Malta for being the sort of Eurovision-cheese that's hard to find elsewhere, and Switzerland/Czech Republic etc. for mixing in some more interesting elements).

Regarding Australia's chances at Eurovision this year, it's hard to say, what with the weird situation we found ourselves in last year with jury scores. Firstly, I think We Got Love has a lot more staging potential than Don't Come Easy (and to be honest, it won't be hard to top that staging), and should hopefully be a more engaging few minutes on stage. I'm also pretty sure we should get more televoters behind us than last year, which again shouldn't be particularly difficult considering we were 15th in the semi and second-last in the finals for televotes last year.

Jury votes are the main question there, honestly. We didn't deserve that fourth place with the juries last year, so I'm not sure whether that trend will continue, but I wouldn't be surprised to see similar jury scores this year with a good performance given that the juries do tend to like this sort of safe, uplifting pop that mixes chart and Eurovision sounds. Though in a year with an unusual spread of song quality, an unusual stage design and an unusual set of frontrunners, it's a hard year to predict; at this stage, I wouldn't be too surprised to see us either NQ or get a high finish in the finals. Time will tell, I suppose.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2018 - Jessica Mauboy - #We Got Love

THE GOOD:
-The message of the song is good.
-It has good vocals and instrumentals.

THE BAD:
-It's kinda generic.
-It's quite similar to another past Eurovision entry. (That being UK's 2014 entry: "Children of the Universe" by Molly)

THE VERDICT:
If I were to rank Australia's four Eurovision entries, I'd rank this one in third. It'd be behind "Tonight Again" and "Sound of Silence" and ahead of "Don't Come Easy". All four are very good in their own ways, however. This means that Australia has done slightly better than last year. It also means that again Australia will qualify for the Final, but not win. 8 points

I think I certainly still like pop. Proof being my Paula "1 2 3" mirror lip sync moments as i'm making tea (inspired by lavieenrose). Tayanna would have been my number 1 of the year right now with her pop song if Ukraine went for her. The problem is as you put it "same midtempo, stays-the-same-throughout, minimalist mold". I didn't want to love Finland but it's actually gold dust this year. What happened to melodic pop? I'm kind of done with people screeching over indistinguishable bleeps and fart sounds.

I love this description of modern pop music

And yeah, I'm with you on Ukraine and Finland as well. I'm not sure Tayanna would've been my #1, but her song's grown on me massively and would at least be somewhere in my top 5; I wish it had made the cut. And yeah, I'm not sure I'd be ranking Finland as highly as I do in most years but when we're a little starved of the usual cheesy, melodic, fun dance-pop it's like water in a desert. Melodies, people, give me melodies!

TBH this year might be the first time where my country will be in the top half of my ranking!
