TaP and BBC parting ways is kinda funny since they did a terrible job by letting Mae representing the UK on home soil. She was the worst vocalist of the night and the song itself was catchy but mediocre at best.

BBC should be looking for edgier artists who can actually sing again.
Mediocre performances have never turned into a mid-table results for Big 5 countries recently.

STAY AWAY from legend/nostalgic acts like Engelbert and Bonnie!
And no more Irish-esque national finals and newcomers like 2016, 2017 pls!
Because an edgier artist that could sing turned out so well for you

I am not familiar with the TaP portfolio of artists. I dare say Mae had a good song that just wasn’t many people‘s favorite. The performance could indeed have been a bit better but in the end a song with some kind of edge or more memorability is probably (yes, pure anecdotal evidence) more helpful results-wise, while that doesn’t make IWAS bad. It did at least become top 10 in Britain despite the result, so I dare say there was some merit to it, even if it might not have been the best possible choice.

Edge alone is not a guarantee for success however, the song with edge needs to be near the pulse of time as well. Did TaP have any of those? Possibly. Could the BBC have found said artist somewhere else? Possibly. Will they find someone like that next year without TaP? Possibly. Let’s hope so. But either way, the most important thing is to be able to recruit said possibly promising artists in the future. And I dare say if one bad-results-year of the UK didn’t hurt this Endeavour for years to come, it’s 2023. So I will remain with a positive outlook until proven otherwise.

I was wondering why they didn't pick Olly Alexander for 2023. The guy is well known (singer in the band Years & Years as well as done some acting). Rumor has it that it was between Olly and Sam Ryder in 2022. Unlike Mae, Olly can sing live and has a history of performing in big arenas. I guess they really wanted a female artist for 2023

Despite the two acts being on opposite ends of the scoring table (Sam finishing 2nd in 2022 and Mae second last this year), they both scored top 10 UK hits. And what worked for Sam was his positive outlook throughout the whole process. If the BBC and the UK at large adopted Sam's optimism and connected a good artist with a good song, Mae's finish would just be another blip on the radar

It's time for BBC to finally bring some "A-listers" which are still known to the continent and are eager to participate (like Hurts, Olly [Years & Years]). Sam and Mae had great songs which turned out to be hits in the UK but Mae was a step into the wrong direction again (a bit generic and couldn't sing live).

Newcomers are fine, for sure - but it wouldn't hurt to get someone more popular again (and knowing that they could potentially perform well)

Putting Hurts and "A-Listers" in one sentence is a bit of a bold statement though. When did they have their last hit??

Ugh. Disappointing but not shocking. We kinda felt it was coming, by their statement on this year it seems they weren't even planning to take control for a 2nd year and i doubt Maes flop helped. I just hope the BBC team have the right ideas now. They did good with JESC last year. I don't hold much hope.

They are a well-established, popular and "known to Europeans" act whose studio albums still scores Top 20 or even Top 10 peaks across the continent.

Btw, I would say that MADONNA is still an A-lister even though she had her last US Top 10 single 13 years ago.

A B-lister is someone like a young teen idol, A C-lister is someone who appears somehwere but no one can name a movie/song, etc.

Hurts are clearly A-list material - even though they might not be on the same level as A+ people like Adele or Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith (but there are more than 3 well-established and known acts in the UK and we shouldn't think of the most successful artist right now wanting to represent their home countries in Eurovision).

I was hoping a little bit for Leighanne who (afaik) is at TaP, but maybe at least in that regard it’s for the best cause her debut single was a bit underwhelming. If we could get an actual A-lister that would be great, but it’s indeed highly unlikely. As far as Newcomers go, I love love LOVE Keir and CONRAD.

Yeah, and those albums fall out of the charts after 1-3 weeks. Their singles failed to enter the single charts in :de: since 2013 and even 2011 in :uk:.

Let me just say that my definition of "A-Lister" is a bit different. xshrug

Don't Say Love is awesome xheat - such a tune, but not right for Eurovision I don't think.

Jane McDonald for 2024 then... xthink

The components are great, but combined into one song it was underwhelming for me as it sounded a bit frankensteined together to me. Merely personal preference though, I am absolutely happy to hear you love it!

I don’t think the problem is with acts necessarily (apart from 2015) but the problem is with the song and presentation. The BBC need less involvement in the song and staging, give the artist the freedom.

Actually I really liked some of the stagings (albeit not too often), just they didn’t match either the energy of the song or of the performers. So yes, I would say keep the staging ideas, just match them better to the rest. Strictly speaking, Storms and IWNGUOY had great staging ideas, just not for Lucie, SuRie or the songs. Recycle great ideas for when the right performers and/or songs come around, don’t „force“ it in the year when the ideas come to mind, if they don’t fit right.

Could we headed back to the X-Factor heavy artist :uk: NF's now that Tap Music will not be involved moving forward?
