I don't know who these 'people' are, but I would suggest that not only is it in the spirit of the thing, but that the format never, ever seems to work. The contest has been approached for years now in the same jaded angle. Fresh blood is needed. Half the time I think people are scared at the possibility of an open contest that just *might* shake things up a bit. It's tiring heading into every year praying that the song will not be abysmal, and practically relieved if it is average. It's a shame that some UK Eurovision fans just trot along and wave their flags without questioning the process, and why, for that matter, they are actually cheering and 'thanking' countries for votes.

It seems to work for Russia and Ukraine among others.

Scooch had had a pop career before Eurovision but they achieved their height of fame during Eurovision so they cant really be compared to Blue.

We wont know if Blue has a shot of winning until we hear the song. However what I will say is that they are a successful legitimate band. Their voices are excellent, their charisma is second to none. Theyre passionate about music and about their fans. Whether they came to Eurovision to kick start their career is another matter. They should be commended either way given our proven track record in the previous few years!

People want established acts...we give them and then they moan. People want new fresh blood and we get results like last year. We will never win either way.

The song will NOT be bad no matter what - none of their songs ever have been (band or solo careers). Whether it suits the crowd of Eurovision is another matter! You'll never please everybody.

Doubt it though it's not being filmed at the tvc I am sure that they do the same procedure that means all bags, belongings, phones and coats have to be checked in. I doubt it will be leaked though we may get reviews of it.

the fallacy in your suggestion that UK has been sending internationally renowned pop superstars for years in succession

Wrong. I don't think I ever used the words 'internationally renowned' either.

If some wannabe off the street wants to become a pop star they can enter X Factor or one of Simon Cowell's other talent-farming operations. Alternatively, they could write some songs, pick up a guitar and do it for themselves. No one's holding anyone back by limiting this year's eurovision selection to a popular act who have a legitimate shot at winning.

This is truly a rubbish attitude. Problem here is that Eurovision should not be about mere popularity, and not solely about winning. Try again.

Please develop this theory; how much of it for instance was due to regionalism and diaspora (considering this was ore 50:50 split?)

I would of course question this.

"we can't do any worse, so..."

What you did say is that UK's current strategy has a track record of failure. My contention is that this is a new strategy that hasn't been tried before.

Your talk of a "glass ceiling" suggests to me that you feel picking Blue is denying the great British public a chance to enter the music industry. The public already have plenty of chance to do so.

I don't think Eurovision should be about anything in particular, whether that's victory, open public participation, vocal excellence, European cultures, etc. It's a song contest where every country has the right to pick an entrant in any way they see fit.

You've missed the point, unless you believe Eurovision is about the music industry and making money; rather than the public having a firm choice on what entry they wish to send, and what sums up the music coming from the UK at this moment.

Yet the country has never had any 'right' to pick and entrant, that's a fallacy. The BBC holds all rights.

Edited for your pleasure.

Sidestepping the issue, of course, about what 'rights' actually are when selecting a song, why this is the case, and why strategies and acts are chosen at any particular moment.
