I think the British people have the right to select their own government, the right to free speech, the right to freedom of movement. I don't think we have any intrinsic right to participate in or vote for our entry in Eurovision. It's the BBC's selection; they can do what they want with it.Sidestepping the issue, of course, about what 'rights' actually are when selecting a song, why this is the case, and why strategies and acts are chosen at any particular moment.
I'm not against a completely open Eurovision selection process. It's one way to go amongst many and it might well work.
However, if you read the earlier pages of this thread you'll find many foreign ESC fans saying "Please UK, send Cheryl Cole/Leona Lewis/Lily Allen/Alesha Dixon". When instead they get Josh, these people wonder how the mighty UK music industry can't do better. Sending someone as popular as Blue (who I doubt would have entered an open pre-selection) is a step in the right direction and shows that the UK is taking ESC seriously. At the moment, I prefer this method.
