Sidestepping the issue, of course, about what 'rights' actually are when selecting a song, why this is the case, and why strategies and acts are chosen at any particular moment.
I think the British people have the right to select their own government, the right to free speech, the right to freedom of movement. I don't think we have any intrinsic right to participate in or vote for our entry in Eurovision. It's the BBC's selection; they can do what they want with it.

I'm not against a completely open Eurovision selection process. It's one way to go amongst many and it might well work.

However, if you read the earlier pages of this thread you'll find many foreign ESC fans saying "Please UK, send Cheryl Cole/Leona Lewis/Lily Allen/Alesha Dixon". When instead they get Josh, these people wonder how the mighty UK music industry can't do better. Sending someone as popular as Blue (who I doubt would have entered an open pre-selection) is a step in the right direction and shows that the UK is taking ESC seriously. At the moment, I prefer this method.

I have to agree with this. Although Blue is by far the best act UK could come up with, it's still a moderately known name for being a British Eurovision act.

I'm afraid that an open selection might hurt because then no one with a somewhat name for themselves would enter, but maybe there would be good newcomers that would consider though? It all depends on how BBC treats it, but looking at past selections it was treated in a very bad way.

Also, focus should be on the songwriters I think. UK has alot of great music, and eventhough famous names wouldn't want to participate, maybe some would want to write songs atleast? But then again BBC tried that method aswell and we ended up with some really dated generic stuff.

I think BBC is a major problem in this really. Let's see after this year.

"we can't do any worse, so..."

Are you sure? I still remember this very embarasing performances a couple of years ago, when adults in school uniforms singing a silly song or believing themselves for aeroplanes. This was embarasing even for me as a western European citizen, but for the British it must have been unbearable. Or did you really liked these entries? I mean, we Germans got a lot of to shame for too. Grazia for example: She only looked good in the wind machine but unable to produce just a single straight note. Or these fallen No Angeles. Maybe that is the reason, why I got a bad feeling about blue.

Apparently, these are the lyrics-

You were the eyes in the face of fortune
I lost my way and I couldn’t find you
Oh, oh no

We’re not the first ones to be divided
Won’t be the last to be reunited
No
Oh no
(oh no)

It’s like rain falling down
Drops of pain hit the ground
I can’t speak
There’s no sound when you’re gone
(Yeah, yeah come on)

I can
I will
I know
I can untie these hands
And get backup again
(oh-ho)
I can
I will
I know

I can untie these hands (untie these hands)
And get backup again
I can
I can
(Get back up again)

I’ve never lost anything quite like this
No second chances if I don’t find it
No (no)
Oh no
(oh no)

You closed the door and you kept on walking
Left me behind and there’s no more talking
No
Oh no
Oh no

^ Looks good!

This is from BBC Eurovision's Facebook page:
It's a very big day for Blue today (Thursday)! At lunchtime, the boys will be at the official Press Launch for their Eurovision song "I Can", and then they're straight off to record The Graham Norton Show - which will, as you know, be transmitted on BBC One tomorrow (Friday) night at 10.35pm. Wish them luck!

heat magazine just tweeted that they've heard the song and that it's cheesy, which in their mind is 'perfect for eurovision'. I'm now a little scared...
