For some reason the top Ukrainian male singers don't want to do Eurovision. xshrug Maybe a Ukrainian poster knows why.

In 10 years of participation Ukraine has sent a male act only twice. Their debut in 2003 when they placed 14th and 2005 when they hosted and placed 19th. Since then its been women all the way.

I do recall a good amount of male singers taking part in the NF, though it's true that overall there seem to be less guys taking part in general than women....I wonder why that is....

It's time for Ukraine to send a male singer. I loved Zlata and she's my all time favorite Ukrainian entry but for crying out loud...Zlata, Gaitana, Mika, Alyosha, Svetlana, Ani.........time to switch it up Ukraine!

Being voted the country with the hottest chicks on the earth... I'm not surprised at their choices

On a serious note though, as I've written before in here when this has been discussed, the good male acts (mostly rock bands) are not interested in ESC, only mediocre cheap pop males seem to be interested in ESC.

While as for female acts, some of the country's most successful and popular female acts and up-and-coming names have been interested in ESC... as a matter of fact Ukraine have to date pretty much sent almost all their big female contemporary acts.

I don't really have any good answer on this, but yeah those bad results with male acts may have had some influence.

But yeah, comparing the male acts interested in ESC with the female acts interested in ESC is probably the best answer in itself. There seem to be a general gender division on the Ukrainian music scene, where successful females are mostly Pop acts while successful and popular male acts are mostly in the rock and "indie-rock" field, I guess rockers are simply more difficult to persuade entering an event like this.

There have been a fair amount of male acts, but they have mostly been mediocre at best and the females they are up against are mostly bigger names, more talented, and with better songs and more influential teams backing them up.

Max Barskih was 2nd place in pre to ESC 2012! :p but I love Gaitana :D

In hindsight I would have rooted for Barskih instead, however I still think the all-English version of his entry is not as good as the Russian/English one.

Thank God we were spared that torture ^^ although Alyosha wasn't much better in my opinion.

Mr Vasyl :D yes Terence I agree with you! Alyosha wasn't much better :p but Ukraine was in TOP10 :p

Well, Alyosha's first entry wasn't much better, but Sweet People is miles above that Vasyl crap song... Vasyl had ONE ok-ish entry in his selection which could have potentially been re-worked to something good: Adrenalin, the fact that I Love You won is beyond me... even if I don't agree with how the selection suddenly changed, I still think it was for the better. With Vasyl's I Love You, I doubt Ukraine would have qualified.

Zlata then in NF was the best :p with Kukushka :D

But that wasn't 2010 though, that was the year after.

And yes, Kukushka got robbed by that awfully boring ballad... however the bi-lingual Kukushka had sucky verses, that song should have been kept in its 100% Ukrainian version because it's a good example of where desperate English destroyed some of it!

"Angel" is so bland and boring I can't even sum up the energy to think about it let alone watch it again. I know people credit the sandlady for its high placement but I still don't get it, 4th in the televote and 7th with the jury is just WAY too high for song that forgettable. I guess televoters really did loved the sandlady that much and the jury loved her vocals, combined with the great final slot it was enough. xshrug

I mean she only won the national final to start with because her fanbase voted over and over by text or something so even in Ukraine there wasn't much passion for it. Then when they tried to redo it Jamala and Zlata threw in the towel probably due to inside pressure. It was as bad and crazy as the previous year! I just remember how bland it was when it won and then when it got revamped it somehow got even more bland!

Zlata and Jamala were so much better and I think either one of them (Zlata especially) could have won. Especially considering how weak and open that year was Ukraine wasted the perfect opportunity to bring the contest back to Kiev.

I agree with all, the 2011 Ukrainian entry was really bleak and its success is beyond me... I knew it was catering to the juries' grandma taste, but the public? Certainly the sand thing and the fact that Mika was very attractive must have fooled voters into thinking the entry was better than it actually was, afterall Ukraine used their effective ESC formula (attractive talented woman + effective show) to cover up the blandness of the entry.

Mika really is beautiful but the dress she wore was as bland as her song, it was the same color as her hair!

Not only did her fanbase vote multiple times, it was so obvious that even the network couldn't ignore it, but she also had a very influential manager. This girl got to walk the red carpet at the Grammys in the US for god sake  She just played the game better then Zlata and Jamala did and got rewarded for it. Thank god the national finals of the last two years were more fair and democratic so hopefully that continues. xpray

I don't get the hate towards the 2011 entry. I loved it instantly and was gutted they were going to change it at one point. I prefer the Ukrainian version but the final version was pleasant enough, with or without the sand effect thing.

Actually, I think it was pretty obvious that her win was not a case of "massive fan voting" but rather it was fixed. The "influential manager" worked his magic for sure

I don't think it's really a matter of hate, more that the entry itself is just so meh ... but sure it's a matter of taste.

You mean the Russian version? I don't think there even exists a Ukrainian one... yeah that one had atleast a bit of character due to the use of a local language, however still meh imo.

I don't hate it, in fact I find it too bland to hate.

In my situation the dislike comes from knowing the alternatives that were passed up. "Kukushka" and "Smile" where just far superior in my opinion and I can't ignore that when I think of "Angel". Its one of the negatives of the internet and getting to see the national finals xshrug
