Re: THE NETHERLANDS 2019

It depends.... The new material is quite "fresh, instant and modern". They wouldn't top any jury votes, for sure, though... still, I would like them to represent the Netherlands just for the sake of being different and my favourite band of all-time haha

Within Temptation are Symphonic Metal. The juries would be still likely to hurt it. But I would still love them to go.

Well I know what genre they are, hence I pointed out that I don't see a comparison with AWS as very valid. I actually think, on the contrary, that the juries would be ok with Within Temptation. Symphonic Metal has a slightly dated sound to my ears and it's quite melodic and operatic, and it would be in English, and Sharon has charisma and can sing so I think the juries would be ok with them tbh.

Dated? Metal doesn't really "date" like other music, and symphonic has the advantage of the classical element. I listen to Nightwish songs from 1997 and they still sound fresh to me, but obviously I like that kind of music anyway.

Perhaps you're right about the juries, but since we've never had that genre before, it's a bit of walking in the dark.

Does any music genre other than pop music ever really sound "dated" to fans of said music genre?

Of course. There's plenty of metal I listen to that clearly sounds like a product of it's time.

The only "hard" or "heavy" (or whatever you wanna call it) entry that made it to the top was Lordi - but IMO not because of the song, but because of their appearance and performance. Metal - dated or not dated - is unfortunately never truly accepted at ESC. Just my opinion.

P.S.- Never wanted to compare AWS with Within Temptation. Just wanted to point out the hardness of the music.

Metal music is - like music from other genres - also "a product of its time".. truth told...

That said, I still strongly believe that it happens at a far more slower rate. It's way more stable. You can clearly hear a difference between a metal song from the 80s, 90s and nowadays whilst you basically do not hear much difference between a metal song from 2005 and 2018. ... while you can already tell that the sound which was highly popular and successful in pop music 3-4 years ago already sounds pretty dated (e.g. Dubstep influences).

WT songs released back in 2007 or 2011 still sounds fresh.

I mean I guess it's about taste maybe, it just sounds dated to my ears that's all, it's like it's a sort of genre that stagnated in its progress but then again I can't say I'm a huge fan of the genre so maybe I just didn't properly take a good listen to different options.

I think the closest thing we got was Cool Vibes by Vanilla Ninja. Now don't get me wrong, I know it's not technically symphonic metal, it's way more Poppy and softer, but it had some slight influences from what I could hear. Maybe also some of those Belarusian "Rock" entries had some slight influences as well... but yeah we didn't really get a full on symphonic metal yet but I think the juries could be ok with.

I get it now, I think I misunderstood you... thing is symphonic metal isn't that hard really, maybe that is why I didn't get the comparison... sure there are some harder elements but the whole melodic operatic addition to it makes it less hard imo.

I would the original version of Belarus 2015 was the closest. It wasn't metal, but pop-rock with a strong violin lead. Killed the power stone dead with the revamp though.

I agree with A-lister. I personally think that Vanilla Ninja's "Cool Vibes" was the closest thing to "Symphonic Metal" we've got so far. Of course, it's still pop but we can find elements which are heavily used in Symphonic Metal.

And on a personal note: I have been a big Vanilla Ninja before and I still believe that they opened the doors for me becoming a fan of Within Temptation shortly afterwards and later, Nightwish as well.

Actually I think juries would love WT. I do believe televoting may like crazy chickens or beards with women more.

Though, I'm Dutch and I've heard somewhere they wanted to write a song and find a singer with that song. I don't believe WT is the right artist for that(off course Sharon den Adel is...) who knows though.

Of course, the televoting is more unpredictable but they have successfully shown that they don't get affected by gimmicks only... otherwise they wouldn't have put Portugal 2017 and Italy 2015 on top.

Usually, entries which "polarize" are more successful with the televoters and I guess that Within Temptation would divide the televoters (not everyone loves rock and even though Syphonic Metal is quite soft in parts, it's heavier than acts like Finland 2013 or Switzerland 2005).

Also when it comes to Sharon den Adel... she was heavily involved in the writing process of her solo project album "My Indigo".

I don't think we will see Within Temptation represent the Netherlands next year since all what they said was that "maybe [they] should consider taking part in Eurovision". I think that Eurovision has never really been a subject of debate for them but now they seem to be eager/open to discuss it.

The Netherlands will probably send something Country-ish again anymway :D

Well, I've played WV and NSC and WT always ends on top. I jokingly call it cheating if you send it. Mathematically those contests look way more like jury voting than people voting. We have to select 10 songs and give them points. Juries do something similar, but people can only vote 20 times. So they are more voting for the best songs in their minds, that's quite different from WV in distribution. This is the reason I believe in WT juries. Doesn't say people won't vote for it, if the song is good, they will. WT is a real possiblre winner of eurovision if the song is good.

Shouldn't we know something by now? Isn't this really late? Any news, rumors whatsoever?

Rumours are saying the Netherlands chose a 'dance' song. After this one came out I haven't heard anyone sepculating about which artist is singing said dance song though
