For years, one question has captivated escYOUnited users, been the subject of debate after debate after debate, taken this world by storm, pitted neighbor against neighbour, built rivalries, mended friendships, broken those same friendships...it puts "fuckin juries, how do they work?" and "did Ireland deserve all their wins?"* to shame. And that question is...
Is Måns Zelmerlöw homophobic?
I'm inclined to go with a qualified "no." Yes, he did indeed do a stupid on that cooking show (jfc, how on earth did "gay people: natural or nah?" come up on a cooking show) in 2014. But whether his subsequent years of affection shown to the LGBTQ community is a genuine attempt at penance or a cynical PR move is, about a decade on, kind of a distinction without a difference to me.
HOWMSTEVER, in this moment where I was saying things like "y'know, it's not like I'm a big Måns fan, but I do hope he comes up with something that can sweep away these BS joke entries infesting the top of the odds," he has instead chosen to give us--give ME--a piece of AI-generated slop that he seems to, on some level, know is dull and reheated. He sounded significantly more invested singing about love, love, peace, and peace. "Style over substance" gives, in my mind, too much credit to the style. Some of the shots genuinely look actively bad. The disappointment he has brought unto me is inordinate. Speaking through my lived experiences as an LGBTQ person, I feel very attacked. So in this sense, yes. Yes he is.
*No, of course not, 2/7, tops.
