Re: SWEDEN 2014

Werent Timoteij folkish?

Musically they have no connection whatsoever to Swedish folk music. Swedish Wikipedia call their music "etnopop", I would simply call it mainstream pop.

Wikipedia states:
Etnopop: "Den omfattar alla typer av populärmusik som tar inspiration från icke-västerländska eller forntida kulturer i sitt musikaliska och visuella uttryck."
=> Ethnopop covers all types of popular music that takes inspiration from non-Western or ancient cultures in their musical and visual expression.
i.e something like a fantasy folk music.
I don't know, I guess hardly something you ethno-fans wants to hear. :D

Re: SWEDEN 2014

As for me there are 2 artists that I want to return to Melodifestivalen:
Pauline - amazing and unique soulful voice.
Linda Pritchard - true schlager diva, skillful and passionate, robbed twice in the contest.

I don't think there's any official definition of "ethno-pop", I mean if you split those words in "ethno" and "pop" there are even different ideas about what those two mean on their own... and wikipedia is not the best source and that definition sucks... "non-Western"? Again this foolish idea that western countries have no traditional or folk-music on their own.

I'd describe "ethno-pop" as a type of genre that is modern contemporary music "pop" mixed with or having some influences by traditional or folk music in some fusion.

I think Timoteij's "Kom" could be described as Swedish "ethno-pop" yes.

I think you misunderstand Wikipedia and who said "western countries have no traditional or folk-music"? I never heard that expression and in Scandinavia everybody knows folk music and most people enjoy and like it. I mean, who is unaware of Irish folk? I think this idea is some kind of personal experience of your own.

I agree with you that the "non-Western" criteria is odd, but I do support Wikipedia making a clear distinction between traditional (e.g. "visor" and classics)/folk music and ethno. Who would call Nordman or Sarek or Timoteij folk music? "Fantasy folk" would perhaps be a more accurate label. Furthermore, what's the point with labels if their definitions are floating and unclear?

edit:
About "western countries have no traditional or folk-music".
I fact I think Swedish folk music is privileged and receive a massive support from the state and various official institutions like for example the Swedish church and universities (Musikhögskolan), pretty much like classical music (which BTW is Western music as well). Visor (~ traditional songs) of for example Evert Taube and Cornelis Vreeswijk are known to any Swede and it's actually impossible to avoid them at a greater dinner for example.

What I reacted at was the "non-western" description on wiki about ethno-pop. I mean even if we don't have much fusions like this in the west, doesn't mean it's impossible to make such, so whoever wrote that definition is just close-minded and base their idea on the fact that it's more common in non-"western" countries with this genre.

I never said Timoteij was Swedish folk  , but yeah it could be one example of how Swedish ethno-pop could sound like though...

I think they had their chances tbh ... ;)

Melodifestivalen next year needs to be changed into a contest where Alcazar present us 30 songs and we choose a winner. It's the only way:rolleyes:

Well, I liked "I'm a sinner nor a saint" and "Alcastar", and obviously "Alcastar" would have been a better winner than Stenmarck in 2005 (although my #1 that year was Nanne).

As for their other two tries I didn't really like them.

The other two were my favourites. I think "Stay The Night" was their finest and the song that would have done best at the contest.

No way, that man has the most scary face. He constantly looks like he's going to eat children or something.

David Lindgren - the dancing bank teller! :D
No, I think he has done his deed in Melodifestivalen and will continue on with musicals and shows. He is one of several artists in this year's setup I have hard to see coming back to Melodifestivalen in the nearest future. His niche is also somewhat passé now.

I want to see Nordman again. I loved their MF song back in 2008 and would like to see them again next year hopefully in the ESC finals.

^ Very likely! Nordman are recording a new album right now. They made a joke dance track and released it for fun:
