Re: SLOVENIA 2019
Based on the longer snippets (thanx GlamSIMorous
):
-Kim remains the safest option of the lineup. I feared the verses would be weak like the ones in "Fse"... They're okay actually, even though I'd have liked more dynamism. The song is a no-brainer considering people's reactions, but I'm wondering if it has what it takes to stand out come May when the plethora of uptempo entries expected to be sent to Tel Aviv will be released.
As much as I'm going to like this better than anything Maraaya have submitted to EMA since they competed, it's not that special. BQL's "Peru" is more original in comparison imo.
-Renata Mohorič is still out of the competition to me, even though it seems to build up throughout the song. It sounds like a typical country ballad to me. Meh.
-René remains on my radar. I really like the vibe of the composition and how the arrangements sound. If the entire version doesn't come across as flat, I'd send this to the superfinal tbh.
-Fed Horses's song is there. It's lovely to listen to but it doesn't grip me at all.
-Ula Ložar: Ok, I can safely say I won't like this now. The slow intro a la "Here For You" doesn't work, the melody is hella repetitive and the arrangements are wonky. It'll sound better live, but still, it's a no for me. Kim wins the Maraaya duel hands-down.
-LUMBERJACK: I like the verses better than the chorus, but overall it definitely fails to light my fire.
-Okustični: wait... is the long ooh-ooh part the chorus? If they repeat that, then it certainly represents more than half of the song. Why?
It's very nondescript and forgettable.
-INMATE: I'm really liking what I hear. I wouldn't mind them going to the superfinal actually.
-Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl: Nice and smooth. I'd like to know whether it builds up a little more towards the end or not. It's good imo, but should it be a finalist? I'm still on the fence.
-RAIVEN: "KAOS" is a definitely a puzzling effort. I like the quiet and mysterious verses, then the chorus hits you in the face without any warning transition. Did they edit the song in this snippet though? It seems like there's a rapped bridge (finally she's included a bridge!) It's all very intringuing. I think this song will make more sense live than as a standalone studio cut. My favourite.
I'm updating my ranking until we watch and listen to the final products:
1) RAIVEN is already a superfinalist. The song is weird and not for everyone, but ironically, it has the biggest potential for Eurovision imo. I get an apocalyptic outer space vibe from it that's giving me life. The staging has to be as explosive and extra as the music though. I'd say Slovenia should take a risk again like last year and go all out. They would stand out big time.
2) INMATE: they're good! I look forward to the live performance.
3) René: the track is very promising. I don't know what kind of staging it needs, but it needs a good one.
4) Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl: lovely but if it remains that quiet throughout the song... The live performance/staging will either make or break it.
5) Kim: super catchy and apparently the most popular candidate along with Raiven from what I got while reading feedbacks on the internet. Needs good staging. Not sure it would stand out enough in Tel Aviv though.
6) Fed Horses: okay song, but chanceless for the contest.
7) Ula Ložar: rubs me the wrong way.
8) Renata Mohorič: "Blue And Red" was a hit entry in comparison.
9) LUMBERJACK: not my cup of tea.
10) Okustični: the melody and ooh-oohs are lazy af. It goes nowhere.
