Same here, they were on our news when they were selected in March
I remember seeing the Grannies on our evening news a few occasions, just before eurovision.one of the few times until recently eurovision has got coverage here outside of the actual shows.

Kirkorov said it at the presentation show of his new video.
Many russian pop stars attended the event.
Also the greek composer, Dimitris Kontopoulos.
And Kirkorov mentioned "I am very happy that tonight my friend and colleague Dimitris Kontopoulos is with us. Dimitris is a great composer and musician that had many successful entries at the Eurovision Song Contest among them “Shady Lady” and “Work you magic”. And having said that I will reveal a small secret : The Russian participant at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 is here with us tonight”.

I've been searching for a "trampoline" to the West, it's true. But Eurovision is not a "trampoline", it's a story that lasts only 1-2 weeks. That's all."

Did he really? I don't recall him actually saying anything.
I only remember some teasing tweets about a "big journey" and pictures with the typical team that did ESC songs, then all the ESC related sites jumping to conclusions and going crazy over it.

Even if the artist has already been chosen, and it could possibly be, it would be amazing if the name were to leak out this early. They usually do a good job keeping it under wraps until the near end. According to ESCKAZ only twice the Russian artist was revealed before March. The earliest was Dina Garipova on February 19th in 2013.
