Re: RUSSIA 2014

No country should sing in english just to get more attention.
Prikhodko didn't have any chance of winning whatsoever, she is anti-charismatic.
In the end of the day an anti-charismatic singer can destroy even a brilliant entry.
The song was good but it wasn't a hit song and it surely wasn't brilliant.
Do you really think Loreen wouldn't win if her song was in swedish?
Emmelie wouldn't win if Only Teardrops was in danish?
Bollocks, they would win anyway, they had a whole package: pretty face, crazy charisma, hit song, vocals, moves, staging.
Just do what you do best, don't try to jump over your head and be sencere + have a hit material.
Language is of no importance.

I agree with your first sentence, but I don't really agree about Prikhodko. I find her very intriguing, sure she doesn't have this fake smiling stage persona (I guess that's what considered "charismatic"), but she's interesting to look at and has a very interesting voice.

I think "Mamo" was brilliant, yes it wasn't some pop song, but it's actually my favorite Russian entry to date and it's a great and original song, haunting and powerful.

As for languages, unfortunately they do matter. If ESC should work properly, it shouldn't matter, but it does... which is sorta sad proof of what's wrong with ESC these days :/

Re: RUSSIA 2014

My two favorite russian entries are in 2003 and 2009 (both were bad in live though),
so i think i would prefer something in russian.

My favorite Russian entries to date were all in Russian aswell (plus "Mamo" which was partly in Ukrainian).

2009, 1994, 2003 are my favorite Russian entries to date.

For me i think its also about the music, because i think i wouldn't like their 2010 entry, even if it was in russian !

Of course, those three songs were out of the westernized pop norm, all having very characteristic sounds on their very own. I do like the 2010 entry though, it was also a bit special and out of the norm and actually I think it would have been much better in Russian.

2011 could have been a great entry IF they scrapped the whole pop thing and made a completely new song out of the Russian intro of the song.

Though, I must say I do like some of the Russian pop attempts in English aswell (some ended up high in my rankings) like 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007 plus of course the Grannies xcheer 2013 is probably the crappiest Russian entry to date though xpuke

No, they don't matter, at all (Kuula? Suus?). If songs in different languages stay in semi it doesn't mean they stayed there because of the language :)
When i say charisma i don't mean fake smiling doll. Marija Sherifovic is amazingly charismatic, just as an example.
When i say hit song i don't mean pop mainstream song :)

Maybe, but I guess it all depends in the end.

I don't think Marija is charismatic a single bit, but I guess that's subjective xshrug Lol I don't think u meant a fake smiling doll though, but alot of people seem to think that big smile = charismatic.

What do you mean with "hit song" then?

"Mamo" wasn't a very appealing song, especially for those out of the ex USSR. End of the story

I'm out of the ex USSR and it was VERY appealing to me, actually it's in my list of all-time fav ESC songs... thankfully not everyone thinks the same (regardless of their geographical position). So there's no "story" to even end here xshrug

Not talking about me. I actually ended up liking "Mamo". But this song had a quite negative reaction and that's a fact, that's why I'm even surprised the juries didn't put Russia lower, so I see no robbery here.

I know that this might be "out of the norm" for some lame westerners who only want safe pop in English, but I can't agree at all that the juries didn't rob them... because they DID! They (the juries) are supposed to be the "experts" with a "musical open mind" in this... well they prove year after year that they are narrow-minded, lame-tasted and prejudiced bunch who do more harm to this contest than anything else.

Yeah, "Mamo" was ignored by Western European countries completely! :(

I can't imagine somebody from the Netherlands, Belgium or Ireland voting that entry though! :(

I think the ones prejudiced here are those who vote for Russia (or whatever country) just because it's Russia and put it in the top-10 no matter the song.
The rest of the world can dislike this song (and any other) without being name "lame westener" or "narrow-minded". I said I liked it a bit after much time, but I thought "Mamo" was a painful moaning song for months and I'm sure many people thought that too and they had the right to think that, of course!

You didn't get my point, I'm not approving of nationalistic diaspora voting (regardless of country).

And yes, of course people are free to like (or dislike) what they want, but unfortunately people tend to go for what they are used for and the majority aren't willing to expose themselves to music "beyond their musical borders". I didn't refer to you though, I meant generally.

As for "narrow-minded", that was referred to the juries, not the televoters. The juries (atleast in my mind) should be "experts" and more open to musical alternatives, but they prove over and over again that they are less open-minded musically than the general televoter seem to be.

I find Mamo one of the most horrendous entries ever in Eurovision... I can remember my mother horrified by that piece of shout. But indeed, that sounded very "Russian pop". I can understand why Eastern like it. To me, that sounds old and dreadful... :?

Yes, Marija is super-charismatic, trust me on that)
A good example of a fake big smile with zero charisma behind it - Hannah Mancini, we all remember where it ended up.
You cannot fool people with a fake smile ;)

What i mean is a catchy song with a hook that people don't forget right after it ends. Let's take a look at top-10, 2013.

Only Teardrops: Catchy hit song with ethnic elements. Not a generic pop.
Hold Me: Catchy pop song, pretty generic but not disturbing.
Gravity: A catchy unusual pop song, i would't say it's generic.
I Feed You My Love: A totally unusual catchy song with Depeche Mode vibe.
What If: Ok, that's a generic and boring one. But it is catchy and well performed.
Alcohol Is Free: Catchy. Not a refular pop song, it's not a pop song at all, but it is a hit song.
L'Essenziale: I wouldn't say it's catchy, but it's captivating.
Tomorrow: Catchy cute little tune, again, i wouldn't say it's generic pop.
Birds: Something totally different and mesmerizing, catchy as well.
Kedvesem: Something totally different and mesmerizing, catchy as well - 2.

See? Out of 10 songs there is only one 100% generic pop and one relatively generic pop.
Out of 8 others 3 are in national languages :)
Other 5 are there not because they're in english but because they're freaking good and catchy ;)
So i totally disagree with you when you say languages matter or when you say generic songs get pushed through more than ethnic stuff in national languages.
I could write a big article on why some ethnic stuff in national languages didn't make it through to the final, but it will take so long)
