The russian society ( as many of the eastern european societies) is homophobic. Maybe he tries to be "more manly" or something like that to his pulic. After all, his life wont finish with ESC, he just thinks of the future. And the russian society doesn`t like to see tolerancy on gays => he will loose his popularity in Russia after ESC if he acts gay-friendly.

It could be also black PR made from other russian artists who wanted to go to ESC, but they couldn`t because there wasn`t a NF.
I am not sure in what kind of media he said that, but as far as I uderstood, it`s a newspaper and I don`t believe that written quotes in newspapers can be 100% true.

Not all the Russian or Easten European society isn't homophobic at all, my best friends (And lovers jeje) are from Russia, Poland and some European Easten countrys (Verry Frienddlys ppl with me of course) and they re told me that it doesn't matter whether if you prefer boys or girls, i'ts just is a matter of interest, and mayber Alex just don't want losse their heterosexual public sympathy if you say something on pro of gay public, just acting by pure hypocrisy...¡¡¡ And i don't thing that he will losse their popularity atfer all, cause will be supported anyway, but personally he can lose respect from all...¡¡¡

I think from reading about this a few days ago, the intent behind the comment was for people to respect his space. I mean if he is a heterosexual man then he's perfectly justified in communicating that he would prefer that male fans who may happen to be homosexual, keep their distance. Of course this could have been put a lot more delicately and violence in such situations is definitely not the answer but this coming from a tabloid so who knows.

If he said such things to try and boost his popularity then that's even worse imo. I know what it's like in Russia, our leading gay rights activists has brain damage after being attacked when he went on Moscow Pride, but people in the public eye, such as Alex Sparrow have the ability to try and change the situation but unfortunately he's contributing to paranoia, intolerance and homophobia. People can laugh and say oh he was only doing it as a joke or he was just protecting himself, well that's not good enough when people are being attacked and lives made to be like hell.
