This situation is very unfortunate for Ovidiu and for everyone involved. If you ask me, I see both sides of this issue. Yes, the EBU could've picked a better time to tell TVR "hey, you didn't pay the debt on time so gtfo", but at the same it's more towards TVR for not paying that debt since it is THEIR responsibility to make payments before taking part in the contest. In fact, this should make you understand why some of the countries who came back recently (Poland, Croatia, B&H, Bulgaria, etc) didn't take part for a while. Now whether or not Romania would have qualified is a completely different story.

No matter whose side you're on, this is kinda broken and messed up. I can only feel for Ovidiu as he has been looking forward to this.

Supposedly the Romanian government and TVR ignored letters sent by the EBU this year about the debts. I understand why the EBU disqualified them if this is true.
?
But why now? Why didn't they withdraw them back in January, or at least in March? Why couldn't they wait three more weeks? Ovidiu has been promoting his song for a while and this is extremely rude to just ignore him like that. He doesn't deserve all of this.

BTW It feels weird to see the words 'not taking part' next to 'Romania'. It reminds me of my shock and disappointment when Ukraine decided to withdraw last year :(

I agree with that. I think that suspending the broadcaster from the EBU is more than fair. A debt of 15 million euros being unpaid for 9 years and even worse them ignoring EBU's letters certainly makes me understand why the EBU suspended them. But I do agree that they shouldn't do it this close to the contest, they should have done it before the NF was organized or immediately after the ESC.

FYI - TVR's debt is for EBU (all kind of transmissions - sports - mostly); All costs or fees for ESC division were paid by TVR. It's regrettable what is happened, EBU has the right to do that...but not now, with 3 weeks before the show. Now, i wish Romania no longer participate in this contest. Never, ever...

If I was TVR I would never participate again or have anything to do with teh EBU again. The way they handled it has been disgusting! Like I have said before: there should have been a 30 day cooling off period or something to allow TVR to get everything ready for teh changed in schedule etc...

I knwo they should have paid or at least set up a payment plan or something, but this close to the biggest show, after all the promotion etc. Don't get me wrong I think this was the worst Romanian entry in a LONG time but Ovi & the Romanian fans did not deserve this to happen so close to teh contest

This reminds me of the melodramatic bullshit Bjorkman and crew pulled with Anna Book and the silly Charlotte hosting thing. Nothing but cheap publicity for them at the expense of others xpuke

Eurovision is less then a month away and lots of time, energy and money have been wasted by innocent people who probably feel beyond shit now. They should have let Romania participate this year and then let them bow out quietly until they meet the requirements again.

I have to say I am REALLY sorry for Ovidiu, the Romanian team and the Romanian fans. They are certainly feeling disappointed and they should be - as they have been left in the dark of what the situation was. All that hard work, those preparations and expectations - just a week before leaving for the rehearsals.

Apparently the deadline was April 20th - if that is the case, then TVR should feel ashamed of themselves for organizing the NF (don't point your fingers at me as I'm Maltese, this is another situation), wasting people's money and dreams only to know that nothing is going to happen in the end. The problem has been there, and they did nothing about it. On the other hand, the EBU could have given them a chance to participate this year - we all knew Romania weren't gonna win or anything with 'Moment of Silence' so it wouldn't have made much of a difference, would it?

The only positive things I can see is that a) both semis are even now and b) Romania weren't among the favourites - imagine the bigger heartbreak if they had a 'Euphoria-'like song (as in, was the favourite from Day 1). My heart goes to Ovidiu's team and I really really hope such things do not occur any more. Having said that, I'd stick the middle finger and not take part ever again. This is just shameful.

Now I'm actually glad Vanotek didn't win the national final. I don't think many people will be sad that the song won't be in Eurovision. It wasn't weird enough to be entertaining and it lacked quality to be good. But I do think everybody feels bad for Ovidiu Anton including me. He seemed like the most excited and proud to be able to sing in Eurovision out of all contestants. It kind of feels like they took his dream away.

If the EBU wanted to exclude Romania for not paying their debts (which is totally understandable), they shouldn't have even let them enter in the first place. Excluding them three weeks before the contest feels more of a punishment for the singer then the national broadcaster. They could have just waited after the contest and if not, just let have them enter this year to begin with.

I hope they clear their debs timelly and we can welcome :ro: again next year!

I don't think that we should let Ovidiu perform anyway, for his own sake. Yes it's not fair on him as an artist but think of the humiliation that he would face as Petra or Mans would have to announce to the whole continent that Romania was disqualified and why they were disqualified and so on and so on and it would all be very embarrassing for Romanians I think.
