The channel has to be an EBU member, public or not. So, we're stuck to RTP! xdoh

The channel needs to be public. If it is private it needs to provide public service missions. that's why RTP is the only one eligible ant that's why theres almost only public tv stations in eurovision. in fact i can't remember of a private broadcaster in esc.

Wrong, private channels can be part of EBU aswell (TV4 in Sweden for instance is).

But they have to do some public programming as well I think.
And obviously TVI and SIC aren't EBU members yet so we wouldn' be able to enter in 2014.
I'd love for TVI, the most watched channel, to enter. It would make the contest so much more popular.

And by saying this I still like some Portuguese entries in previous years , especially 2008 and 2009 are quality entries..

What do you mean by that? Either a channel is "public" or "private"... maybe some sort of mixed exists aswell I dunno but in the case of TV4 Sweden it's 100% private owned.

They can be private but they have to have some "public service missions". Basically they need to have some sort of public service programming.
I'm not sure TVI or SIC have that sort of programming.

The broadcaster indicated that Portugal will most likely be back in 2014 unless there are any last minute financial cuts but apparently they are already putting a team together...Yay...

^^That's the point...

1999-2007 - horrible, dark era.
2008 - not my cup of tea, but better than the previous terrible 8 years.
2009 - A miracle
2010 - Acceptable
2011 - Horrible and embarrassing
2012 - same as 2008

So, if it's to keep on this path, better not spend money we don't have to be there.

I wonder if Portugal was to go with an internal selection, would the broadcaster be wise enough to pick something that's universally more accessible and like or would they just continue with the same ol'?
