Re: PORTUGAL 2014

I hope Carlos Costa doesn't enter. His performance on FdC 2012 was so incredibly cringe worthy

RTP should ban Carlos Costa. GOD he is such a mess!!

I saw on escportugal that RTP invited foreign composers. I hope we are getting some good stuff from swedes. :D i would be completly confortable with having someting like "heartstrings" of Janet Leon from last years melodifestivalen :p

But on a serious not though, what's happening with ESC??? This GREAT ORIGINAL concept where entries are representing their countries is being killed right in front of our eyes...

English language in entries representing non- English speaking nations, foreign composers, foreign songwriters, foreign dancers, foreign choirs, foreign choreographers, foreign promo teams... I mean when will it stop? xshrug

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

I don't see any problem with that. Countries should send a good song. Just because it's Portugal, it dosen't mean we should send fado and ballads and crying ladies waving at sailors every single month. Honestly, i think we should send a really good and true fado song because we have never done it but i think it shouldnt be this year. Portugal needs to reinvent themselfes has a participant and should send something completly dif from what has been sending. I am not saying that we should sing in english. I like portuguese and i would like to have it in portuguese.

I also think there is a lot of good portuguese artist that should represent (and they are not influenced by swedish composers). I'm talking about Aurea, Amor Electro (would love to have them) and Ana Malhoa (i dont like her music style but i think it would work in esc).

All of this to say that just because it's Portugal, we don't need to send the same stuff every year. Whats the problem of having an "swedish" type of song just for one year?

Who said anything about you having to send fado all the time? xshrug

But the concept and soul of ESC relies on entries representing their countries, if it's not even co-composed or co-written by native talents, then how is that entry a genuine representation of your country? xshrug

It doesn't have to be ethno music, it could be pop, rock, dance or whatever, but importing entries from abroad is basically saying that you don't trust in your own local talents enough and rather rely on the works of others.

And why should Portugal send a "Swedish"-type of entry? If Portugal want to send something different (like Pop for instance) then shouldn't it atleast be somewhat representative of what contemporary Portuguese pop sound like and not like how Swedish pop sound like? xshrug

because portuguese pop sound is like "Dança Comigo". And I don't like it. And if it is "swedish pop" but with portuguese lyrics... I don't the see the problem and it dosent feel less portuguese.

I can't believe that all Portuguese Pop sound like "Danca Comigo", I just can't

Well, atleast that would keep the native language plus probably a Portuguese song-writer would be working on the song aswell, so I guess it's "ok" (though preferably entries should be made by citizens of that country imo).

That's not true. Dança Comigo was pimba, which is a very popular and cheap Portuguese style, but it's not pop at all. Grant you, we are no champions at pop producing, but there are some decent examples. Plus, I don't think there's any such thing as "Swedish pop". Songs which usually carry that label are rather universal really and could come virtually from anywhere, North America included. They're not even using their language FGS!
The only Swedish style songs belong to the nordic schlagger genre (Swedish equivalent to the Portuguese pimba) which is mercifully quite dead at ESC thank God.

Anyways, let the Swedes do their thing and leave us to our own. I'm sure we can find our own way without immitating anyone else.

I totally agree with you. Azerbaijan is the perfect example. Their songs are almost always musically decent but they are so americanised as to make us feel they don't belong. Despite their good results I myself unconsciously don't respect them as an eurovision country and sometimes even forget they make part of it. Comes March and I'm never even curious to find out what their song is going to be.
No other country is like that all the time.

Our pop music is pimba! Because we dont know how to make pop music. seriously can you name portuguese bands and singers that had sucess with pop music besides David Carreira? And even him is working with foreign producers.

And i'm not talking about pop/rock, i'm talking about true pop music! Yes, we had some decent tries but the singers or bands never enjoyed the sucess. Ana Bloom was kinda cool but she only had two songs! I honestly cant remember a singer or band that had enjoyes sucess with pop musi without being pimba.

Anjos is a good example, they are light pop but not pimba. Excesso, is another one. On a closer look, our 2006 ESC entry was pop and not pimba (which comes to prove that pop and English aren't automatic nation rescuers ;) )
Still, it is true, our pop has a tendency to be a bit ballady, but not all pop has to be danceable. Anyway, the fact that we don't have much pop doesn't mean that we must go and call something else pop.

Well, "Senhora" was amazing, and I also liked "Vida minha". But the last song he made ("Hurem" for Severina) makes me wanna xpuke xpuke xpuke. Btw, maybe he will now take part at FDC because his song "Amor" wasn't received for the Belgium "Eurosong".

I love "Hurem" xcheer

Well, Babic is acceptable because his songs abroad are kept in native language and he still try to make them feel genuine for the countries they are aimed for.
