I'm curious about something: when it comes to the Olympics, do you find yourselves cheering for athletes from other countries aside from your own? For example, this year even though I'm from :ca: I'm cheering for a couple of the road cyclists from :uk: on the men's side since I'm a huge fan of one of the team members (specifically 3-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome, who's also contesting the time trial)

In 2012 in the diving I was mostly cheering :au: for Matt Mitcham, a lot of Brits were supporting him after Daley.

And in the swimming I was supporting :us: with Lochte and Phelps.

Aside from those I just backed Great Britain, although if ever we're not in the running, or don't stand a chance, there are always some countries I am more friendly towards than others :p
:ie: :ca: :au: :nz: :za: :us: :fr: :de:

I can't say I know much about 2016's teams though so I'll be curious to find out who's on them.

Can't wait for Friday night tbh.
Hopefully Brazil isn't trying too hard to beat the London 2012 Opening Ceremony ... simply because it's impossible. Those ~4 hours were pure perfection without being too bombastic and over-the-top (like Beijing 2008).
I really hope they're going for something charming and colorful that Brazilians can identify with, something that ignites a spark of hope in their hearts.

Just like in Eurovision, I cheer for this or that country depending on who are the opponents.

Always!
For me it's not a celebration of nationalism but sport spirit.
I usually cheer on underdogs or unknown athletes no matter where they are from.

I think I'll focus more on sports than supporting countries. I can't wait for volleyball, handball, basketball and taekwondo xcheer

The :uk: men's road cycling team (Steve Cummings, Chris Froome, Ian Stannard, Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates) taking a break during a training ride in Rio. The men's road race goes Saturday, with the individual time trial a few days later.

Live-Broadcasting started at 20:00 here in Germany.... they were talking about the doping-scandal and the political situation like 90% of the time. Sure It's important to talk about this topics as well but I have to admit that it's actually quite annoying ... the sports should be the main focus imho.

They did talk a lot in swedish TV as well, but I think it is just because of the start of the games, it will get better hopefully! :D
A slender 1-0 win over South Africa for our girls, thankfully, cause we need to improve lots to beat Brazil and China later on in the group stage. But 3 points at least! :)

Germany's girls beat Zimbabwe 6-1 yesterday but there is still much place for improvement... we missed too many chances but we also lacked creativity now and then

Tonight our men's team will have their first match against Mexico, the olympics winner of London. That will be very tough... our team had hardly more than one week of preperation and not even a test match... I'm worried about the chemistry. The quality is decent, especially the midfield looks pretty good but the big question if they can perform well as a team.

btw, I only support :de: athletes and maybe some underdogs. Supporting :is: 8-athletes-team doesn't seem to make much sense, no of them will come close to win a medal I suppose
Edit: Maybe javelin thrower Ásdis Hjálmsdottir can make a sensation... she might be at least good enough to qualify for the final

Who are the German team players? Do you guys have important players or is it mostly just reserves? The Portuguese team is basically a second or third rate reserve team (even considering it's a U23 team). Unfortunately no big clubs allowed any of the first class or second class players to compete this year. And no test matches as well.

I know that in men's football the Olympics isn't seen as being important but I think FIFA should do something about this!

We have the Bender twins, who were once most promising midfielders in Germany, but then had some bad luck with injuries. Also young talents like Ginter(who was in WC squad two years ago) and Julian Brandt, who's got sorted out of the final Euro's squad. As Flo said, it's a decent team. But imo it lacks a good wing defender. I think a 3rd place is the max. possible.

And I don't think FIFA will do something about it, as it was their idea to make the olympics a U23 tournament, so they avoid to have the World Cups being less important than anything other.
