This evening I watched the Lithuanian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, Eurovizija.LT, online from the UK, on demand, one day late (the reason being I watched Denmark's national final live online last night). Here are my comments on the songs whist watching on demand tonight. By the way, I didn't see preview videos of the songs beforehand, so my viewing of Eurovizija.LT 2024 was my first time of seeing / hearing any of the songs. Please read this as if I'd been watching live last night, and posting after each song was performed.
Song 1: Aistè – We Will Rule the World
It's difficult judging the first song when you haven't preveiwed any of the songs beforehand. Anyway, the flame effects on the backgrond screen, early on, and the firework effects (which form bird wings) on the background screen are impressive, though I'm mystified as to their significance. As for the song itself, it's an OK pop song, with a good beat at times, but I don't think this is a winner.
Song 2: Žalvarinis – Gaudė Vėjai
I haven't seen the lyrics, but I take it this is in Lithuanian. If so, it's great to hear a song in the native language. I like the use of the guitar (e.g. introduction, instrumental break and other parts ofthe song) and the person on the drumkit. The singers provide good harmony during the chorus. I'm mystified as to the significance of the trees on the background screen for much of the performance, and the giant sun on the background screen at the end.
Song 3: Pluie de Comètes – Be Careful
A ballad with a beat, but this sounds to me like something from the 1970s. I'm mystified as to the significance of the octagon and circle on the background screen at certain points in the song. Is it necessary to have so many instances of "Never be the same" towards the end?
Song 4: Silvester Belt – Luktelk
Well this is a song which, during the verses, is sung softly, with a sort of wobbly sonund, and for the performance has the blue background. During the choruses, the song has a powerful beat, and for the performance, the background changes to red / black patterns (some instances of the chorus had streaks of white as well). The colour scheme for the bridge in this performance was blue. Not bad, but would this succeed at Eurovision?
Song 5: VB Gang – KABOOM!!!
This seems to be the liveliest song so far, with a powerful beat, and plenty of use of electronic sounds. However, the style of singing reminds me to some extent of Aqua - "Barbie Girl", so this could, peerhaps, be seen as something from the late 1990s. I like the way this speeds up near the end, and finishes with a pop.
Song 6: Il Senso – Time
I particularly like the introduction, and the way the circle drew on the background screen. The opening verse had lines sung by individual members of the group, and lines which were sung by multiple members with good harmony. There were some spectacular images on the background screen as the song progressed, e.g. sea waves, but I'm mystified as to the need for the electrical interference effects on the images. I'd say this is the best so far, but I'm not sure this would be suitable for Eurovision.
Song 7: Shower – Impossible
Well the opening verse seemed a bit flat, but at least this suddenly became powerful, with a strong beat, during the first instance of the chorus. During the live performnace, there was a variety of images on the background screen, but that's about it really.
Song 8: Monika Marija – Unlove You Starting Tomorrow
A country ballad. For the national final performnace, I liked the way Monika performed the first verse seated, on a predominantly dark stage, beneath an overhead lamp. The piano could be heard clearly during the opening verse. Her voice became stronger on the first instance of the chorus; she stood up and a beat could be heard. There was a moment in the performance where flashing lights were briefly used; I'm not sure they were necessary at all in this style of song. The performance drew to a close wiht Monika sitting down. A pleasant song, but could this be seen as an attempt to replicate "When We're Old" in 2018?
Song 9: Queens of Roses – Walk Through Fire
After a rather quiet few opening lines, the song quickly livens up, with a good beat, and the national performnace featured plenty of orange lines, and orange shapes, on the background screen. Presumably orange was chosen to represent the colour of flames / fire. The chorus is memorable and catchy, and the three ladies provided good harmony, but this is what I'd call a 1970s disco song.
Song 10: The Roop – Simple Joy
The Roop represented Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Discoteque" in 2021. They are back this year with the song "Simple Joy". During the national final performance, I noticed the loud bang at the start, and the mushroom cloud on the background screen. A beat followed. I think the lead singer's voice neeaded to be stronger on the opening verse. Thankfully he sang in a more powerful manner during the chorus, which is memorable and catchy. I liked the use of green on the background screen (and fireworks) during the final instance of the chorus, and the blue waves on the background screen during the earlier instances of the chorus. Surprisingly, the mushroom cloud effect, on the background screen, was shown in reverse at the end. I am swayed towards The Roop as returnees, but I'm not sure this could do as well at Eurovision as "Discoteque" did in 2021.
Well what a selection. Quite frankly, I think the Man-Go interval songs were better than some of the ten competing national final songs!
These were the three which made it to the Superfinal:
Shower – Impossible
Silvester Belt – Luktelk
The Roop – Simple Joy
When they announced the Superfinal results, The Roop appeared as 3rd. The cliffhanger was when the winner was going to be either Shower or Silvester Belt. As we now know, the winner was Silvester Belt – Luktelk. Congratulations to Silvester Belt for winning. Although not the one I wanted to win (I wanted The Roop to win), they did well to win out of the three Superfinalists. So Silvester Belt will represent Lithuania with the song "Luktelk" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in May. Lithuania is drawn to perform in the first half of the First Semi-Final on Tuesday 7 May 2024. The United Kingdom votes in that semi-final, but time will tell whether or not I'll want to vote for Lithuania that evening. Good luck to Silvester Belt in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 First Semi-Final, and in the Grand Final if they get there.
Well done also to Shower and The Roop for getting to the Superfinal. In addition, well done to the remaining seven artists for getting to the Final after competing in one of the five heats (which I haven't seen).
I must admit, at 3 hours and 11 minutes, I think it was a bit long for a national final that contained just ten competing songs.
