That they're not more complex or demanding than the so called "children's music" of the 1980s (as you called it). That modern music could do better if only it made an effort.
Oh ok, I really disagree with the way you are assessing this. I believe it's the other way around, modern music places so many constraints on a melody for stylistic reasons that it's extremely hard to write something that works. It has to be short and powerful. There's no space to work with really. Every note has to be perfectly placed. This is exactly why you have these songwriters that pretty much solely specialize in writing such melodies. But we're talking mainstream pop here.
