Re: Japan | 日本 | WV76: Jun Maeda - Distant Years | WV77: Suggestions NF (Open Now!)

It's only just hit me that it's thanks to you I won WorldVision... I would have taken my break and probably not have brought forward this entry which I was actually saving for around Christmas time. Yup, it's all thanks to you............

I HATE YOU! I'm having to make 70 glitter gifs when I should be focusing on Eurovision. Absolutely outrageousxheat

Actually you should be thanking me... I persuaded you not to have a break the edition before by sending Dillie, so Zobo wouldn't have even had your song in an NF because you'd be on a break. So you owe ME a PQ and an even more glitteringglittery glitter banner xqueenbitch

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV80: General NF now open! Also, catching up on things.

Catch-up and NFs

Aaaalright, time to revive this green room! After being terribly busy with university for a bit, and then taking a couple of weeks to just flop around a bit and recover from it all, I'm finally back on track to put some more time into WV. But I've missed a full two editions here in this thread, and it's time to prepare for a third - so let's get on with the recap!

I'll give some thoughts on how the last couple of editions have gone, for anyone who's interested in reading them - they're under the spoiler below. Most importantly, though, I've got a WV80 NF at the bottom, with (hopefully) enough different genres that there's something for everyone. So look forward to that!

WV80: National Final

And now, for the most fun part of the post: a national final! It's really been far too long since I've last last done my usual six-song NF. I've had a couple of three-song mini-NFs lately, and the big recommendations one a few editions ago, but my most recent six-song, my-own-choices NF was the Fate-based selection in WV73, and I haven't done a general mixed-genre one since ten editions ago in WV70. It's time to change that now - and so, I'm happy to say, we return to Zobo-Japan's regular six-song NF!

After looking through my shortlist, I've tried to go for a good across-the-board mix of genres this time, so hopefully there should be something for everyone. We start with Zen Zen Zense, a soft-rock pop number that served as the main theme to massively successful 2016 movie Your Name, before swapping tracks with the cute and super-relaxing Chiisana Boukensha. Third up is Sukima Switch's Golden Time Lover, a hip-hop song with great verses that's been on my shortlist for a while now.

Taking us into the second half, we have the beautiful emotions of alternative fusion ballad Rakuen no Tobira before focusing on some good old cheesy fun with the uplifting bubblegum pop sounds of Aoku Yureteiru. Last but not least, we end with bilingual singer nano (no, not the Swedish guy) and her powerful orchestral rock song Bull's Eye.

For ease of voting, I've included a recap video and a text-only song list at the end of the post. If you have trouble accessing any of the videos, then please tell me and I'll get onto it ASAP; I've done my best to upload & check the sources below, but Japanese copyright and regionlocking are being annoying as always, so there's always the chance that something will slip through the cracks. Now, onto the show!

Song List:

#1: RADWIMPS - Zen Zen Zense
#2: Sora Takahashi, Rie Takahashi & Ai Kayano - Chiisana Boukensha
#3: Sukima Switch - Golden Time Lover
#4: Ringo Aoba - Rakuen no Tobira
#5: Sumire Uesaka, Ai Kakuma, Yumi Uchiyama & Nozomi Yamamoto - Aoku Yureteiru
#6: nano - Bull's Eye

If you're interested, then please vote in the usual Zobo-Japan-NF way: rank the songs as 10-7-5-3-2-1, with 10 points going to your favourite and 1 to your least favourite, then send me your votes (and any opinions you might want to give!) either in an ESCUnited PM or via Facebook. The voting deadline is set for June 24, 14:00CET. Hope you find something to enjoy!

Thanks to ::sg:lond: for my first sets of votes here, and your comments! :D

The NSC database doesn't want to load for me, so I can't check, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest! RADWIMPS has been enjoying a good amount of popularity recently, with Zen Zen Zense in particular being a big hit. It'd probably be my most well-known/mainstream WV entry ever if it won this NF (well, either that or my WV66 entry Disco Star... but probably Zen Zen Zense).

EDIT: Oh, the database finally loaded... and yes, this exact song was apparently submitted to NSC147! And came 24th, with 26 points. I've never been in NSC, so I have no idea whether that's a good thing or a bad thing but... it sounds bad.

Two more voters have now sent their rankings - thanks to ::na::queb! The scores are still quite tight up the top right now - here's how things are currently looking:

Also, I think it's time for some good ol' mention spam!

What a nice line-up xbow Didn't expect it will be so hard to vote because there are 3 songs I like equally and each of them is adorable in its own way.
Still completed my ranking and sent to Zobo. Hopefully the best one wins!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV80: General NF (DDL: 24/06 14:00 CET)

Apologies for being a little late to do this, but I've finally set a voting deadline for the NF: June 24, 14:00CET. That means there's a little under 24 hours left from when I'm posting this, so if you're planning to vote, get cracking! We have a leader right now, but only barely, and most songs could still catch up with ease at this point:

37
35
32
28
24
12

A few final reminders, just to those who have liked/commented on this NF, or who have received votes from me in an NF this edition: Eulaliya nekoisneko RainyWoods whiteshoes No pressure, of course, but I'd love the votes - and that goes for anybody else not mentioned here too!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV80: General NF (DDL: 24/06 14:00 CET)

Ooh, three new voters overnight! Thanks a bunch to :hk::gr:::mida.

We now have nine voters for the NF, which is pretty solid, but... things remain super-close! The lead has changed around a few times already, and a single set of votes could still propel either 2nd or 3rd to a win. This seems to be a pretty contentious NF too, with not a whole lot of agreement - for the first time in a full Zobo-NF, every song has gotten at least one :10:! After this latest set of voters, here's how the scores sit:

51
49
45
40
39
28

Will that be our final score tally, or will a final voter or two shuffle things around a bit? Nine-ish hours until we find out!

Sorry mate that I cant vote in here, because vimeo is blocked in ID :(

Hmm... are you able to access the two Vimeo vids (Chiisana Boukensha & Golden Time Lover) through this proxy? http://ctrlq.org/vimeo/

Edit: I just tested this through an Indonesian VPN and it doesn't seem to work. Oh well - thanks for stopping by anyway! For future reference, my VPN is showing Dailymotion as being accessible in Indonesia - would it help if I used that as a backup host whenever YouTube isn't available?

Edit #2: nekoisneko I've reuploaded the two problematic entries to Dailymotion, just in case you wanted to go through my NF in the remaining three hours! ;)

All good - at least now I know for next time to include better backup sources!

I did, however, receive one more set of votes - bringing the NF's total to a quite respectable ten voters. Thanks again to :lond:::sg::na::queb:ua::pe::hk::gr:::mida::cema!

While things were close, we ended up with a winner, which has now been sent for the edition. So look forward to it!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV80: Aoku Yureteiru

WV80: Aoku Yureteiru

After a solid ten voters in my general NF for WV80, a winner finally emerged: Aoku Yureteiru, sung by a group who for some reason made the baffling choice to perform under their four full names rather instead of some sort of group name! As you can probably tell by the background picture, this uplifting little bubblegum pop number serves as an anime theme: specifically, as the ending theme of the genre-spanning Genshiken Nidaime. Fittingly enough, the show was named about as confusingly as it's ending theme's performer: despite 'Nidaime' translating roughly to 'the second', it's actually the show's third season, or the fourth if you count the short straight-to-DVD season. Anyway!

While we're at it, I may as well talk a little more about Genshiken, since it's a rather interesting series, and one that's fairly precious to me. Adapted from a manga of the same name, Genshiken starts out essentially as a rough, but fun, sitcom about the daily lives of a bunch of otaku - essentially, hardcore nerd guys - meeting at their university club. The series continues to grow throughout, though, bringing in a likeable and constantly evolving cast and using them to explore themes not usually given a serious look in anime. What starts out as a fairly straightforward comedy turns into something that focuses effectively on themes of depression, self-worth, sexual and gender identity, growing out of the person you once were, and more - all while keeping its sense of fun, and giving a realistic-yet-entertaining look at mid-00s otaku culture in Japan. The series was one of the very first bits of Japanese media I really got into, and it probably hit me at a good time - as it changed throughout, it reflected my own changing interests in entertainment, and remains perhaps the most relatable piece of entertainment I've consumed. It's absolutely something precious to me.

The lyrics of Aoku Yureteiru fit in neatly with the feeling of the show's later parts: people growing closer through hardship, nothing lasting forever, and the nostalgia you can feel for something as simple as a dusty old room where you used to chat with friends. The almost bittersweet lyrics are paired with a bubblegum pop song that nonetheless feels a little more genuine and emotional than most of its kind, and it all combines to make something that I just find to be really warm.

Each of the four singers is one of the voice actors for the show, giving it all a bit of a personal, homegrown feeling... or, y'know, the show's producers were just doing it to save on production costs. Entirely likely.. Nonetheless, it's a sweet little song, and while I know it might not appeal to a lot of my usual WV supporters - or have a hope in hell of qualifying - I hope as many people enjoy it as possible. Now - onto NF results!

p0btU3q.png

I've got to say, this was a bit of a rollercoaster ride to follow as it went along. Going into the NF, I'd thought Rakuen no Tobira would be the big one to beat, with Bull's Eye and Chiisana Boukensha on its tail but not quite managing to pip it. Aoku Yureteiru and Golden Time Lover would be fighting for last, I'd thought, with Zen Zen Zense sitting steadily in the middle without really challenging for the win. As it turns out, though, I'm apparently still terrible at predicting how my NFs will go.

Only a day or two into the voting, Bull's Eye was already looking very difficult to beat: two songs in, it was already sitting on double the points of second place, and there'd been a comment in the thread excited about nano, the song's artist. I was just about getting into the mindset that I'd be sending Bull's Eye to WV, but then... it kind of all came collapsing down. Despite its strong start, the song averaged out to second-last for the next four voters in a row, leaving it far enough behind that another strong run from the later voters wasn't enough to push it back to the win.

As soon as Bull's Eye started to fall down the rankings, I set my sights on Rakuen no Tobira. I wasn't all that surprised, really; I'd figured Bull's Eye would be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, and Rakuen was what I'd predicted in the beginning. Plus, it was getting an incredibly solid run, with the first seven voters all having it in their top three. But that, too, collapsed in the end; while it managed to hold the lead for most of the voting, the sudden 2-3-1 clump at the end left it languishing right when it most needed votes, and so it too fell short.

Zen Zen Zense managed to be both all-over-the-place and consistent with its scores, receiving twice as many last places as any other song but consistently sandwiching them between high scores to stay on a respectable average; it was never looking like our winner at any point, though.

Halfway through the votes, I considered Chiisana Boukensha to be a real possibility, as it was sitting in a respectable position and seemed the most obvious option for the usual Pot-7-to-9 crowd that my NFs seem to draw. But as things happened, I think it was hurt by what was probably my least Pot-9-ish NF yet, with some of my usual frequent voters absent and a lovely bunch of new surprise voters turning up from other pots.

Golden Time Lover's result was perhaps the most predictable of the lot, given that between NFs and internal choices, the formula of 'Japanese man singing loud and divisive alternative pop-ish song' doesn't exactly seem to be too popular so far  Nonetheless, the song managed a super-hot surprise 10 from Rainy, and its meagre score still hasn't discouraged me from planning to throw similar flops into the mix in the near future!

In the end, though, the star of the show was surprise winner Aoku Yureteiru. Catching up from a slow-ish start to manage an impressive slew of 10s and 7s in the latter half of the voting, it seemed that this sweet little piece of bubblegum pop captured more votes than I'd expected, and so it marked the first occasion that an upbeat song has won a national final in Zobo-Japan. How will it go in WorldVision proper? 'Probably a hot flop', would be my guess... but hey, the song's already defied expectations once, so let's see what it can do from here!

As a closing note on this national final, I was super thrilled to see that, for the first time in one of my full-length NFs, every one of the six songs managed to be somebody's favourite. Out of a fairly diverse field of music, everything earned itself at least a single 10; it's great to see that, whatever the final scores may have been, there was someone out there who saw the worth that I see in each and every one of these songs. It feels like pretty good encouragement to go on with more diverse NFs like this! (...he says, while having recently written up plans for two rather specific NF formats.)

We all had our secrets we'd never voice
Hiding them as we laughed away
Trying our best not to hurt anyone

But the truth started to well up
Suddenly forcing its way in
Taking us to a new level

Just embracing the little
Bittersweet struggles we all had
And taking a deep breath
Would let us dive together into calmer times

My heart's swaying, swaying in blue
Remembering the place we were together
A room with a door
That's always open

It seemed like nothing at the time, but now it's priceless
And I'm sad we can't get those times back
But it's where I met you all
And it'll always be our world

Almost like an unspoken rule
We'd read between the lines, not prying too deep
But once in a while we'd be brave and face things head-on

Never knowing how things would end
When we're open with our feelings
But knowing it was better
Than hesitating and losing each other

Our swaying hearts, getting lighter
Remembering the times we had together
The freedom we had here
Feeling like we could fly

It seemed like nothing at the time, and we took it for granted
Just our day-to-day lives
But more than anywhere else, it was where we could be ourselves
And it'll always be our world

So blue, stretching into the distance
Without an end in sight
So blue, I'm turning off my limiter
Crossing space and time
To be by your sides
To bring us all back together

My heart's swaying, swaying in blue
Remembering the place we were together
A room with a door
That's always open

It seemed like nothing at the time, but now it's priceless
And I'm sad we can't get those times back
But it's where I met you all
And it'll always be our world

xyaaay Yaay, I honestly didn't expect Aoku Yureteiru to win. Was sure it's going to be Rakuen no Tobira. Very glad that this upbeat cheerful entry represents :jp:. Hopefully you can qualify into finals!

I was also surprised that Aoku Yureteiru won. It's sadly not my cup of tea, it's still nice and cute. I preferred Bull's Eye by far, but nobody can get what they want always. xshrug

Your analys of the results was a very interesting read as always. Tringapore from Polandball wish you the best of all lucks with your entry and future NFs!

I've spent a while today working on another NF for next edition, which should hopefully be ready to go shortly after tomorrow's semi results are revealed. As always, I'm aiming for variety, but in particular... Pot 9, this may be the NF for you!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV81: Instrumental NF (now open!)

Well. I wasn't exactly expecting Aoku Yureteiru to score all that well, but I also didn't expect it to reach quite this level of hot flop: 23rd Regular (19 points), 19th REJU (24 points). At this point I'm kind of wishing I'd gotten two points less so that it could at least achieve being my new wooden-spoon holder.. but alas, that title is still held by The Rock City Boy, which earned a total of one more point. Nonetheless, thanks to those of you who supported me! Now, looking forward to the (hopefully) greener pastures of next edition: it's time for an NF that's I've been hoping to get to for quite a while!

WV81 Instrumental NF

With 16 editions now under my belt and a massive shortlist of instrumental pieces to send, this is a long time coming: my first instrumental-only national final! It was super-hard to narrow down my list enough for a six-song NF, and I've probably got enough songs sitting around for another dozen or so NFs on this theme, but... hey, I've gotta start somewhere, right?

While I'm calling this an instrumental NF, it's probably just as appropriate to call it a soundtrack NF: all six of these entries have served as the soundtrack to one Japanese pop culture franchise or another, with two coming from games, two from visual novels, and two from anime. Also, as was the case back in WV80, I tend to define 'instrumental' as 'something with no discernable lyrics, or where vocals play only a minor role'... so don't be surprised to hear a touch of aaaah-ing and ohhhh-ing here and there! Still, the focus here is on the instruments: sweeping strings, powerful electric guitars, crazy synths and a good helping of emotional tinkly piano bits.

Song Overview
We start with composing duo Anant-Garde Eyes' short but sweet combination of piano, percussion and epic strings, with Theme of SSS showing just how much a song can grow in under two minutes, before moving to something a little more delicate: the beautiful flutes, strings and choir sounds of Yasuharu Takanashi's Reminiscence ~Awakening Soul~. Changing tracks, we then have the first of two retro-game battle themes in this NF, with Yasuhiro Misawa's Eve serving up an unusual fusion-rock combination of flute, electric guitar and synths.

Entry number four, the lovely string & piano ballad Scene Shifts There, is headed by what would be Zobo-Japan's first return artist: its composer, Ryo Mizutsuki, was also responsible for WV67 success story Sanka. Along similar lines, next entrant ZUN has been responsible for more than one previous Zobo-entry - with WV69 Kachou Fuugetsu, WV74 Bad Apple, and numerous NF entries all covering his soundtracks for the Touhou indie game series - but Toono Gensou Monogatari marks the first time his original manic fusions of synth and ethnic sounds have appeared in my time with the region. Finally, we close with something a little more restrained: the tinkly piano sounds and delicate emotions of PMMK's Shounen-tachi to no Wakare.

I think I've been a little luckier with the usual Japanese copyright claims this time around, with none of my videos seeming to be region-locked or removed from YouTube for once (though the record labels appear to have forcibly added ads to some - apologies about that). Please mention early on if you're having difficulty accessing anything, though, and I'll try to get some backup sources going. Now - onto the songs!
