Re: Japan | 日本 | WV67: Ryo Mizutsuki - Sanka (Scattered Petals) | WV68: Rock NF now open

Four sets of votes so far! A big thanks to ::mazo:en::lond::ru:.

Things are pretty close right now - there's a slight leader, but last place is within one vote-set of first. Current standings:

24
20
19
17
17
15

Hoping to get a few more sets in before the deadline - would appreciate anyone who can take the time! I'll try to get around to more NFs from other people over the next few days, since I'm finally starting to clear up some of my backlog of homework. Still, there are a lot of people doing NFs this season, so I'm not 100% sure I'll get around to all of them - shoot me a PM or a mention if you want me to push you up the list!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV67: Ryo Mizutsuki - Sanka (Scattered Petals) | WV68: Rock NF now open

Time for a late update on the finals and my NF! Firstly, one last big thanks to everyone that helped me get as far as I did with Sanka.

Seriously though, I got seventh place, which is amazing. It's a song I adore, and while I was already happy enough getting through to my first finals with it, I'm thrilled with the finish. Depending on how you look at it this is either the second or third best result in Japan's long WV history, and either way it's the best result we've had in the last 40 editions - it looks like we've (temporarily, at least) broken the Curse of Japan! There are plenty more KEY songs where this one came from - some instrumentals, some big power ballads - and this result's only encouraged me to share more of them with you all at some point in the future. Here's the customary detailed thanks - I think everyone's included, but call me out if I've missed you!

& Northern Savonia from OP, who are currently flagless and didn't manage to get me any REJU points but I appreciate nonetheless. Thanks for the 6, and I'm looking forward to you being a full member!

I joined WV largely to share the music I like in the first place, so I'm thrilled to see so many people enjoying what I had to offer. The results show was worth the 3AM wakeup. xheya

Anyways, onto the NF!

Three more people have now voted, bringing us to seven sets of votes: ::mazo:en::lond::ru::is:::midw::iled Thanks to all of you for helping me decide my next entry!

There have been a few points so far where it looked like one song was about to pull into a strong lead, but each time another song has managed to make up the gap. We've still got a leader at the moment, but things could change pretty easily. The current standings are:

38
36
32
32
31
27

I just noticed this morning that my inbox had filled up, so apologies if you tried to vote in that period - it's now all cleared up and ready to go. If you haven't voted yet but are still interested, head over to my NF post and take a look! Deadline is August 28, 14:00 CET. Looking forward to sending whatever wins here!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV67: Ryo Mizutsuki - Sanka (Scattered Petals) | WV68: Rock NF now open (Pg94 #938)

Woah, you beat me by 1 point. This isn't fair at all. I demand the 3 points I gave you are stripped away in spectacular fashion.

In all seriousness though, that resultxheat Big congratulations to you Zoboxheart I admit, I didn't see this one coming. I guess people really did appreciate something beautiful and traditional from Japan, and i'm so glad that they did. I can imagine the excitement you must have felt. It's kind of shocking and sad how cursed Japan is/was... lets go with the "was" as i've a feeling you can keep this hotness up.

Expect my votes for your Rock NF pretty soonish. I'm in snail mode at the moment for some reason, but rest assured i'm looking forward to hearing your songs and letting you know what I think of them.

Update: NF deadline is set for August 28, 14:00 CET - so for any stragglers who are still interested in voting, you've got about 36 hours to go! As with my last NF, one set of votes could change a lot here, and I'd love to see how things would move!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV67: Ryo Mizutsuki - Sanka (Scattered Petals) | WV68: Rock NF now open (Pg94 #938)

Thanks a heap to :mt::paci:::sthm, who have just sent their votes - I'm now at a total of ten voters, which is the most I've had in a national final since joining! Lovely to have the feedback.

We've got a bit of a two-horse race at this point, but there's still reason to vote in these final hours - they're two quite different horses, and they're very close. They're pushing against each other, jockeying for first, bumping into each other. They draw closer. Closer still. No, closer than that. Okay, now you've got it. They're about to trip over each other in their push for the finish line. They could be in danger.

Please, think of the horses: send some more votes.

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV67: Ryo Mizutsuki - Sanka (Scattered Petals) | WV68: Rock NF now open

Alright! I've waited an extra two hours past the deadline, so I'm going to call it. We've gotten a final set of votes from :sc:, which has let one of the poor horses squeeze a little ahead of the other - I've escaped the awkward 'tie/one-point win' situation this time! Final scores are as follows:

66
62
47
46
44
43

A little bit of support for everything, which I was glad to see, but we did end with two clear favourites. It looks like this'll be a slightly controversial one in terms of results - not a whole lot of consensus here, with the winner scoring quite low from a number of countries. Still, I'm hoping at least some of you will appreciate it.

Thanks again to everybody who's voted and supported me here: ::mazo:en::lond::ru::is:::midw::iled:mt::paci:::sthm:sc:. Look forward to the reveal!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV68: Ayane - Endless Tears

Time for a super-late green room update! It's 3AM and I'm tired, so this won't be quite as long as the usual novel, but I've procrastinated for too long already and I do enjoy doing these. First, to some NF scores and analysis!

xfrSkEs.png

This was quite the fun NF to watch unfold! For the first half or so, Endless Tears slowly crept its way into a first place, with everything else on just about equal footing. Just when it looked like it was going to be incredibly hard to catch, a long spurt of support for Uchouten Jinsei put it into a comeback first place, and then we ended up with an all-out back and forth for the last few sets of votes. It looked like we were set on Uchouten Jinsei until the votes from Daniels came in the last couple of hours. Real nail-biting stuff. Your votes matter, people!

I was glad to see some support for pretty much everything here. Everything except for Uragiri no Yuuyake was somebody's favourite, and even that received some moderate support across the board. The last-place Identity proved a controversial one, getting two top scores but also four last places. Hishoku no Sora was the one song I'd predicted would flop, but it found a quite strong supporter in the form of neko, and managed a respectable set of 7s at the end as well. Meanwhile, if it were up to the Lavi & Lupus pair, I'd have sent back-to-back Rewrite soundtracks - the two both gave their top points to Philosophyz, which shares its origins with my previous entry, Sanka.

In the end, though, the more WV-friendly Endless Tears managed to make its way back into the lead, and now has the honour of representing Japan in WV68. Here's the entry!

To be honest, I'm really not all that familiar with the artist here (Ayane); this is the only song of the NF that I didn't discover through my usual anime-watching and game-playing. From memory, it was just the background music to a video I found through a suggested link on YouTube; I thought the song was great, looked it up, downloaded it, and... well, here we are! Anyways, I did a little research (read: chucked the artist's name into Google and clicked on the Wikipedia link), so for those who are interested, Ayane - real name Junko Hirata - is a singer from Japan's Saitama prefecture (just a little to the north of Tokyo). She's mostly known for games and anime, particularly those produced by 5pb - which brings us to the source of this particular song.

In 2008, visual novel developer Lass and producer 5pb released the sci-fi/fantasy VN 11eyes to relatively strong popularity and reviews (yup, you can see where you're going here - for the third time in a row, a visual novel song won my NF!). This was enough to prompt the company to release a spin-off/expansion, 11eyes Crossover, in 2009. Ayane, who had already provided the OP (opening theme) Lunatic Tears for the original game, came back again for this sequel, performing what I believe is the slightly-stronger Endless Tears as the OP. If you're interested, here's the YouTube link of the OP featuring the song - I'd have loved to submit it as my entry if only it didn't cut out two thirds of the song. I suppose a six-minute long opening theme may have been slight overkill, though  I was going to try my hand at translating the lyrics from scratch, but when I checked I noticed that somebody else had already provided a semi-decent translation. Since I'm fussy, though, I... kind of ended up rewriting most of it. Credit goes to AzureDark for the original translation, and me for the edit:

I keep my vow and cut through the lies with my bare hands

O transient angel, restless for our atonement
Lead us into into the twisted night!

Even as the world signals its end
I want to cling to one final hope
At the place, on the day, that I made a vow
To my friends; to tomorrow

O hollow reflection, full of lament
Atone for your shattered heart

As we wander lost within eternity, your hand
Stops me from falling into an eternal slumber

I make a pained wish to my trembling fingers
Letting out a spell that shines in the light

These tears will never run dry
They fall as today flows into tomorrow
At the place, on the day, that I arose
For my friends; for tomorrow

Someday, those words we spoke
Will form the tale that heals us
As the light illuminates a figure reflected in the mirror

Even as the world signals its end
I want to cling to one final hope
At the place, on the day, that I made a vow
To my friends; to tomorrow

I will embrace these endless tears
And adore the beautiful paradise before us
O hollow reflection, full of lament
Atone for your shattered heart

Well; I guess I lied; this post ended up not being much shorter than any of my others. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the song! xheya

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV68: Ayane - Endless Tears

Preparation for Japan's WV69 NF is underway! It's our first single-artist NF, and it's one that I think a certain niche of my regular voters will quite enjoy. I'm hoping it'll be ready & good to go in a couple of days. Look forward to it!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV69: Yuuhei Satellite NF (Pg96)

WV69 NF: Yuuhei Satellite

Introduction

It's that time again! The three semis are over, the NF videos are uploaded, and we're good to go. My regular voters should know the drill now - six Japanese songs, a recap, me waffling on for too long, fun times. We've got another theme for this time around, and it'll probably make the NF a divisive one: it's an artist-only NF featuring Yuuhei Satellite! Some of my previous voters may remember them from my WV67 NF (the ethnic one), where their song Kachou Fuugetsu was only one point off first place. I've brought back that close runner-up, along with five other lovely songs from the group, to see which one you'd all want me to send for next edition. Big write-up below - feel free to skip if you just want to listen & vote!

About the Band

Yuuhei Satellite (幽閉サテライト; translation 'Confined Satellite') are really quite interesting to try and define; like their music itself, they're a cross between a whole lot of different types of things. This may get confusing, but I'll try to keep it as simple and interesting as I can! The band was formed as a fan group of the indie Japanese danmaku (side-scrolling shooter game) series Touhou, and set about making cover versions of some of their favourite songs from the series' soundtrack. They quickly managed to become some of the most popular creators in the absolutely massive Touhou fandom*, and as a result provided the music for a popular fan animation based on the series, which only served to make them even more well-known. Since then, they've released album after album of cover songs based on Touhou (with a few original tracks scattered throughout), and have also branched out to release covers of music from the mobile game Kantai Collection (under the name Yuuhei Catharsis).

*Seriously, it's mind-boggling. The series isn't particularly well-known in Japan outside of its niche (but large) fandom, but together that fandom has produced hundreds of thousands of pieces of fanart and fanfiction, terabytes upon terabytes of music, meet-ups in some of the country's largest convention centres, etc etc.

RDVEeU7.jpg

The group is made up of nine members: Senya (also known as Mayumi Morinaga in her professional solo career) provides vocals, Kamase-Tora writes the lyrics, Otodama plays the guitar, Saga Asuka provides all illustrations and cover art, and arrangement/composition is done collaboratively by Autobahn, deitarabotchi, Iceon, HiZuMi and Nurarihyon). Their style tends towards the electronic, which they use both for their faster dance songs and some slower, atmospheric ballads. Add in a decent dose of ethnic sounds and a little pop, lots of unexpected mood switches and some genre fusions, and you get a general idea of their sound.

Despite being a cover band, Yuuhei Satellite's releases are often so different from the original tracks as to be unrecognisable at first glance. The original soundtracks to the Touhou series are full of frantic chiptune sounds and bombastic boss themes - in covering them, the band tends to take a base melody, morph it in a completely new genre with their own lyrics and original arrangement, and add new sections all over the place. In this sense they're half-cover band, half-original composers. As a self-publishing indie fan group, the band usually sells their music in person at Touhou conventions and general anime/gaming conventions*, but can also be found at more general music stores, which remain more common in Japan than in the West.

*Comiket being the largest. It's very much different to Western anime/gaming conventions - fan-made works are the focus, with around 30,000 registered fan groups selling their works each time. Over half a million attendees each time, Japanese queues, massive grounds... there's a lot to go into, but it's generally too complex for a footnote here. Essentially, though, it's like a massive sprawling market of fan-made stuff).

About the Songs

Anyway - onto the NF! We start with Koborezakura, a dark and mysterious track with some ethnic elements, and then a simpler, moving ballad in the form of Opposite World. Picking up the pace again is Tsuki ni Murakumo Hana ni Kaze, a bundle of fusion sounds and bombastic power, before Mujakisa e no Uwagaki gives us something warm and upbeat. For our penultimate song we have Kachou Fuugetsu, a constantly-shifting midtempo/dance/ballad/fusion/something which some of you will probably remember from my WV67 NF. Last up on the list is Nureta Kami ni Furareta Toki, a power-pop track that's all dance beats, speed and high notes.

An honourable mention goes out to Daphne Gensou Uta (Daphne's Illusionary Song), the super-fast Eurobeat track that was on my shortlist for the NF... until I looked through WV68! While it may not seem like it at first, both this and Chubu's entry from SF2 (Yakumo Mikoto) are actually covers of the same song (Necrofantasia, extra stage theme from Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom). I have no idea whether this would be too similar to Chubu's entry, or if I could submit it as part of this NF; the mods haven't gotten back to me yet, so I just replaced it to be safe when I was doing up the NF earlier. This may come back in a later NF if I find out it's allowed - for now, consider it an opening act of sorts.

Down below, I've provided both Japanese song names and English translations for each track, and I've done the same for the original tracks that are being covered in each one. I'll be using the Japanese cover name for submissions, votes etc. though. If anyone's curious as to why I re-uploaded Kachou Fuugetsu for this NF: I decided to go with a particular theme for the backgrounds of all the videos this time, with each featuring the specific Touhou character whose theme is being covered in the song. Since I'm picky, I had to make sure I did it for all the songs, which meant a re-upload. Plus, since there were so many nice Touhou backgrounds to choose from, I figured I should redesign my recap video template to make it a little fancier. Hopefully my largely-pointless effort hasn't gone entirely to waste!

Details

Votes are to be sent to me by either PM, email (zobocamel@gmail.com) or Facebook if you've got me there, and as usual our voting system will be 10-7-5-3-2-1, with 10 going to your favourite song and 1 to your least favourite. Deadline is September 19th, 14:00 CET.

I'll do my main batch of mention-spam once the current edition & spin-off are over, but I thought I'd give a few early heads-up to some who may be particularly interested:

RainyWoods RomanFromRussia DaFlo You all gave Kachou Fuugetsu your 10 when it last showed up, so I know you've at least got one thing you like here!

nekoisneko Evangeline - Neko, I think I remember you mentioning you like Touhou covers; Evangeline, you must as well, since you just submitted one yourself

Lupus - I was looking over my received votes earlier, and... have you seriously given me four 12s in a row (three semis & my one final)!? That's ridiculous! Thanks so much xlove Hopefully this one will keep the train going

I think this may actually be my longest green room post so far, out of a pretty competitive field of overly-long green room posts that I've made in my short time here. Serious props go out to anybody who actually finished reading it. Thanks for the help, and I'm looking forward to your votes!

Hot wall of nourishing textxheat Rest assured you'll get my votes here, though probably once again kind of late because of hosting commitments.

I'm really sad Ayane failed this edition. You would have been my 10 (perhaps even 12 contender) in the final had she made it. I love the song THAT much. I've been listening to it daily pretty much since being introduced to it from your NF. Thanks so much for this great songxheart The only selfish silver lining here is that now I have the last rock song standing in the final (somehow)... Mwuuahhaahaaa HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAA. (edit: Actually Romania's song is rocky) I wanted "Endless Tears" in the final so badly though. One of the very top highlights of this edition and your Japan stay so far. That guitar solo has me on the floor dead.

Touhou instrumentals/songs are life. I've never heard such diverse compositions before and I hope your entry will do better than the last Chuban entry did :)

Whoa, suddenly only five days until the deadline. I'd better get cracking with things!

NF68 Wrap-up

I suppose you could say I'm crying 'Endless Tears' about missing the final with what I thought was a rather strong entry, but... well, I'm pretty sure everyone thinks that about their own entries. Still, I'm thrilled to see a bunch of people enjoying the song despite achieving my lowest SF placement to date. I think I just got a little unlucky here - having grabbed 19th in regular voting but a lovely 7th in REJU, it seems most of my supporters were in the other semis for this edition. Ah well; 'ya win some, 'ya lose some! A huge thanks again, and I'm hoping my next entry will be able to broaden my appeal a little bit while not letting down my stalwart supporters. Now, that makes for quite a nice transition: NF stuff!

NF Stuff

Only three voters have sent their votes at this point, and there's no unanimous favourite - so while things are starting to separate a little, every song is still clearly in it to win it. Thanks to :lond::is:::nb for getting in early!

Now, it's time for everybody's favourite: some good old mention spam! Just going to mention any previous voters + those who may be interested for other reasons. If you don't think you'll be interested in future, you can unsubscribe from the Zobo NF Pester List if you want to (in which case just tell me) - otherwise, expect to keep popping back up each edition! I'd love to have your votes (or anybody else's, of course).

With the entry submission deadline looming, I'm going to set my NF voting deadline to September 19th, 14:00 CET. Hoping to hear back from some more people before then!

As usual, shoot me a message or something if you want me to vote in your own NF - I can't promise anything due to university work and the sheer flood of NFs this edition, but I'll try my best to send votes & feedback.

Pondering Future Editions

Now, while we're at it - I'm still snowed under by all different plans for future entries, and I'd like to get an idea of what people are more interested in. I'd love any feedback as to what you'd all want to see! I'm trying to stay away from rock/atmospheric electronic stuff for now, since I sent the former in WV68 and have something from the latter group coming from this NF, but there's lots of other stuff on the table. The current 'shortlist' consists of:

1) 'Weird upbeat stuff' NF - cheesy fun with silly lyrics/concepts or just unusual sounds. Something along the lines of a comedy NF. Most things in here would probably be rather divisive, but I can imagine some people having a lot of fun with the stuff here.

2) Funk & Ska NF - Get your groove on with some upbeat brass sounds! It'd be something along the lines of my rock NF, where I've got an overarching genre and then some different sub-genres within - while everything fits within the theme, it's about half rocker sounds and half bubblegum J-pop.

3) Emotional instrumentals NF - I could take this in a lot of different directions depending on which songs I include, but either way there'd probably be a spectrum ranging from the melancholic and depressing to the uplifting and powerful. I'll have to have one of these NFs soon enough either way, because I've got so many things from this category I want to send. In terms of my previous entries, expect some more like Believe Me and Sanka along with a couple of different sounds.

4) Power ballads (either NF or internal; undecided so far) - I do quite love my power ballads, yet I haven't really done much with them yet aside from chucking the odd one or two from outside my toplist into some past NFs. For big, sweeping sounds, powerful vocals, strings and piano, this is what you want. I've definitely got enough entries here for a strong NF, but there's also one beautiful song that's well-loved in Japanese pop culture and is just begging to be sent at some point. Could go either way. Regardless: power ballads!

5) Pop (either NF or internal; undecided so far) - Similarly to the above, there's quite a bit of pop I enjoy, yet everything I've sent to WV so far has been more on the alternative side of things. I'd be leaning towards an NF here, just since I have such a range of subgenres and so on, but I've got one song with spectacular melodies and harmonies just sitting there and asking to be sent internally. Either way, expect something a little more conventional than my previous entries (but no less beloved) with this option.

6) 'Crap Anime, Good Songs' NF - Having watched plenty of anime series over the years, I've come across a lot of great music cursed with being the theme song to a mediocre or downright terrible anime. I figure an NF would be a good way to showcase them and give them a little exposure outside of their disappointing context! There's a lot of rock pop on this list for some reason, but also a couple of midtempos and ballads.

7) 'Self-referential anime themes' NF - In a sense, the opposite of the above - anime music that feels right at home in its source series. While most anime series just grab a song with a vaguely-fitting sound to act as its theme, these are the exceptions: stuff with lyrics about characters, the plot and so on. This would be my most stereotypically 'anime-ish' choice for obvious reasons. Expect a lot of fun and cheese here; it'd be about 50% bouncy bubblegum pop girl groups and 50% adrenaline-filled men shouting things. Could be good for something different!

8) Semi-retro NF - Most of my Japanese music library is fairly recent, and I think the oldest stuff I've got dates back to the mid-90s or so. That said, this would be something with a very different sound to my usual things, and it'd be rather varied. Essentially, I'd be putting anything that doesn't sound modern here - some older anime themes, J-pop from the turn of the century (which sounds rather different to the current stuff), 8-bit game soundtracks, recent music written intentionally with an old-fashioned sound, some Western-styled swing; apart from the actual release dates, it's retro in just about every way.

9) [Secret album] NF - I'm assuming I might not be allowed to reveal specific artists and stuff this early on (correct me if I'm wrong and I'll add it in), but there's one particular album that I'm just itching to send as an NF. There's a particular concept album from a few years back where one of my favourite Japanese singers worked with one of my favourite Japanese composers to make a bunch of rock pop and power ballads that all tell stories on a certain theme. This'd probably be a shorter NF - three songs or so - since despite the strength of the album I've got a few tracks here I just adore, and some of the later tracks reference lyrics from earlier ones. This is something I'll be sending sooner or later, but I thought I'd add it onto the list for now.

Okay! So... there's my not-at-all-short shortlist, if any of you want to weigh in on what would be a better choice. I've got some slight preferences, but they're all ideas I want to push forward at some point - I'm just wondering about what people want at the moment, and how I should prioritise these. I've got a list of powerful songs ready and waiting for all of them, which I can't wait to share. Trying to make the decision is killing me. So much lovely music, in so many genres, and yet such little time. If you want to give feedback, just do it however you want - vote for the ideas, rank them, just pick out an individual one you like or hate, whatever.

Anyways, I get that there's a lot to look through between my NF and this list, so just respond to whatever you're interested in. The help would be much appreciated!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV69: Yuuhei Satellite NF (Pg96)

Still only sitting on the three sets of votes at the moment, so I'm a little worried voter numbers might not be high enough to mean anything at this rate. Two days to go before the NF deadline - please do take a listen and send some votes if there's anything that interests you!
