i think this is an italianthing.
It has been always an Italian thing, not only this year.
The standing ovation for Marco Mengoni shows what The italian public likes most. A beautiful melody, a passionate interpretation and a powerful voice.
The term Bel Canto was coined in Italy and is part of our musical and cultural heritage. All the songs that have these ingredients are always welcomed by the wide public.
As I said before my top 3 is Mengoni-Lazza and Madame. A perfect mix of what the italian music market can offer.
Lazza has been the most selling artist last year, modern urban and reflexive. Marco is the most famous male singer and one of the most beautiful voices, he explores different styles of music , Madame is future and contemporary.
The italian public doesn't vote for what they think can be suitable for ESC. They vote for the song that touches their hearts or feelings.
It's a bit different for the italian public which loves ESC because we all make considerations what could do well in ESC, it's inevitable. But we are a minority. Personally I would send Lazza or Madame to ESC, I love Mengoni my nr 1, just to show to the European public that we can offer more than the classic Italian ballad. But guys this is what we can do in an excellent way The Classic Italian Ballad and what the public likes more. We don't have to invent the wheel every year.
Last year Brividi was something different, I know many of you don't agree, but if you ask the italian members of this thread they can conferm that Brividi isn't a classic ballad at all. It has a different structure it's urban and different influences and these are important details that maybe a non Italian listener can't capture.
Just to make a clear example.
ULTIMOs song is a classic old styled Italian ballad
Mengoni s song is a classic modern contaminated Italian ballad.
