Piero Pelù - Gigante
Whew what a chorus. This is the right kind of anthemic for me. Big but still packing that charm. Loved when he went into the audience and shouted in that mans face. I wish it was me.
Elettra Lamborghini - Musica (E il resto scompare)
I wasn't particularly looking forward to Elettra Lamborghini but somehow I expected... more? This is inoffensive though. I don't exactly hate it. Things heat up for the bridge but the rest feels a bit weak. Her stage presence doesn't help matters here. Underwhelming.
Enrico Nigiotti - Baciami adesso
I liked Enrico's previous attempt at Sanremo. Baciami adesso comes off as a bit mid, but naturally is still oozing that Italian quality.
Levante - Tikibombom
I'm having troubles with this one. Levante has an interesting aura on stage but it's that angry grey cloud of a percussion heavy ballad we've heard so many times before and I'm just not vibing with it that well. So over the whole drum and bass thing. I feel like it's something that might be worth my time though to try and get into. I won't discard it. Overall right now I'm mixed.
Pinguini Tattici Nucleari - Ringo Starr
I simultaneously want to shoot this song and make love to it. So many liberties are taken here but it just about gets away with being such a wasp of a song and performance.. just. It is stupidly catchy and a goofball in its ways. Makes me think of Occidentali's Karma actually. A similar kind of energy (just more irritating).
Tosca - Ho amato tutto
Absolutely spellbinding. I have a pain in my chest experiencing this. It's exquisite and so very powerful. I'll have to do some proper thinking but I feel like this could end up my favourite song of this years Sanremo, possibly even the whole 2020 NF season. It's the kind of thing that speaks to my melancholy soul. I can't resist the aching beauty when it's delivered to me in this way. Tosca was simply beyond magnificent.
Francesco Gabbani - Viceversa
I'm a bit confused. Admittedly a great performance but I didn't find the composition to be particularly all that. The verses actually were fine but the chorus is a bit of a sleeper. It's pleasant though overall. But is pleasant enough? Apparently so for whoever on earth was voting tonight.
Paolo Jannacci - Voglio parlarti adesso
A very impassioned performance. The light and shade in Paolo's voice is rather lovely. There have been multiple better ballads however this Sanremo.
Rancore - Eden
First let me start off by saying..
Second from last for Rancore tonight? This composition and performance? No way. Get out.
I love me some deep, dark hip hop and here we have it. This was immense. So dynamic. Full of passion. I can't of course comment on the lyrical content because me no speaky Italiano but aurally I was aroused. One of the very best from across both nights. That bridge section.... wheeeew. I still haven't recovered.
Junior Cally - No grazie
Hmmmm coming straight after Rancore, I felt like saying
no grazie to this pretty much there and then immediately, but that would be a bit unfair as it's not terrible. It's not exactly great either. Mid stuff.
Giordana Angi - Come mia madre
The arrangement really wasn't doing too much for me here. Just floating around whilst Giordana's shouts I've no doubt some touching words, but I'm not connecting too well.
Giordana Angi - Come mia madre
Great voice. Don't really have much of an opinion on the composition. It's alright overall but not really my thing.
I thought that the first night was almost too good to be true. Of course, nothing tonight was particularly bad, but it all kind of paled in comparison to what we heard on Tuesday. Two or three great standouts though for me. Racore was incredible! Tosca, sublime! Piero Pelù a delight! Those three trampled over everyone else in my opinion, but I think Pinguini Tattici Nucleari could work at Eurovision with Ringo Starr. I do sort of like it but I'm also already mildly annoyed by it which is a dangerous sign.
