I hope Mahmood accepts. If not we'd have to either put up with a spoiled child who doesn't deserve anything right now, or round 2 of Il Volo with a song people generally seem to not like anywhere near as much as their previous one. Mahmood's song is great as well. I do if I'm being honest find it strange that he won by the juries help with a song like this at a festival such as Sanremo (it is undeniably peculiar) but the song itself is extremely good. The controversy over this whole thing is a shame.

At the same time though, maybe next year Sanremo wants to rethink the voting system. It's utterly baffling how a song that from the beginning was well liked with the public as well as the jury, and only gained more and more momentum throughout the week, then can't even make the top 3, instead it's place being taken by a song the public weren't particularly behind (and even got destroyed by one half of the jury on night one) and another the jury didn't like. I don't see how coming comfortably 3rd with the public, doing amazing with the jury (topping the press vote even) puts you 4th when you had a strong start and didn't once falter, only kept rising. Yes, I'm still confused and upset about what happened to Loredana. I'm not good at maths but none of it at a glance makes any sense to me. In the words of Samanta Tina, "can someone explain me"?

Looks like Italy will be a fan favourite again :D

then this year the south pole will win!

ps wiwibloggs is sponsoring Mahmood to the max today, they finally woke up!
They should follow Sanremo better, and the Swedish plastic monopoly is over, people in Europe are getting bored of the usual dance songs, demanding and wanting quality and Sanremo and the leader.
Do we want to make eurovision a real stage of serious music and experimentation, a showcase for the world of the most beautiful European music from north to south from east to west? Every year the worst quality is becoming a circus full of politically correct drag queen and bad aesthetic taste
I'm biased but reading the comments on wiwbloggs and other sites seems to think like me

I dunno why bit I still have echo in my head of Ariston audience shouting:
“LO RE DA NA”
It gives me strange, half pleasent, half totally unpleasent feeling! :/
Somewhere in the shadow behind I see Mahmood’s face.. :(

Reviews, reviews... I've been putting this one off for a few days while I try to get my thoughts together on the song.

As with most people here, I feel like Soldi is growing on me. And it's absolutely a strong song: it stands out, it's well composed, and clearly a lot of people like it. Thing is, I'm just... not sure it's entirely my cup of tea.

I can appreciate what it's doing on an objective level, but it goes with the opposite of my preferences in a lot of ways. I usually like songs with a big presence, but Soldi is understated and minimalist; I like growth throughout, but Soldi never really moves anywhere new after its first chorus; I like highly melodic stuff, but Soldi is more focused on its rhythms and lyrics. And so on, and so forth.

There's also the fact San Remo gave me two songs I would've loved at Eurovision, then dangled them tantalizingly close to the win before giving said win away to someone else. That's no fault of Mahmood's, of course, but I think Simone would've been my #1 of the year come May, and Loredana probably would've sat comfortably in my top 5. Even Il Volo, despite their song being a stop down from Grande Amore, brought a strong entry that would've made my top 10. So when all three of my favourites, including the two big ones, finish in #3, #4 and #5... it's a little frustrating.

As for all the controversies going around - I very much feel sorry for Mahmood, despite his song not so much being my cup of tea. He seems like a nice bloke from what little I've seen of him, and as someone who just came and did his best job performing a song that plenty of people like, he really doesn't deserve the hate he's copping from a lot of places.

There's probably some validity to the criticisms of the jury and the scoring system - e.g. the press jury (I think it was them, at least?) placing Il Volo dead last in the final strikes me as being a bit of a tactical anti-vote, and Loredana should've made that superfinal given her high rankings in multiple metrics. But there's no need to take that out on the artist. On a selfish level, I'm almost wanting Mahmood to decline the Eurovision invite so that we have a chance of seeing Il Volo, Loredana or even Simone go instead; but morally and rationally (and because I don't really want to risk Ultimo being rewarded after all this), Mahmood 100% deserves that ticket to Tel Aviv.

Anyway, this is quite a bit longer than my normal song reviews, so for a TL;DR: Soldi is a good song. I'm just not sure it's my kind of good song, and I do have a little bit of sadness thinking about what else could have been. Hopefully the song will continue to grow on me (it's already around the middle of my rankings in an admittedly weak first batch of songs); for now, 6 points.

P.S. In a sense, I'm almost secretly glad that Simone missed out. His song builds so beautifully, and I'd be terrified to think of how they'd cut a full minute out of that.
