Reviews, reviews... I've been putting this one off for a few days while I try to get my thoughts together on the song.
As with most people here, I feel like Soldi is growing on me. And it's absolutely a strong song: it stands out, it's well composed, and clearly a lot of people like it. Thing is, I'm just... not sure it's entirely my cup of tea.
I can appreciate what it's doing on an objective level, but it goes with the opposite of my preferences in a lot of ways. I usually like songs with a big presence, but Soldi is understated and minimalist; I like growth throughout, but Soldi never really moves anywhere new after its first chorus; I like highly melodic stuff, but Soldi is more focused on its rhythms and lyrics. And so on, and so forth.
There's also the fact San Remo gave me two songs I would've loved at Eurovision, then dangled them tantalizingly close to the win before giving said win away to someone else. That's no fault of Mahmood's, of course, but I think Simone would've been my #1 of the year come May, and Loredana probably would've sat comfortably in my top 5. Even Il Volo, despite their song being a stop down from Grande Amore, brought a strong entry that would've made my top 10. So when all three of my favourites, including the two big ones, finish in #3, #4 and #5... it's a little frustrating.
As for all the controversies going around - I very much feel sorry for Mahmood, despite his song not so much being my cup of tea. He seems like a nice bloke from what little I've seen of him, and as someone who just came and did his best job performing a song that plenty of people like, he really doesn't deserve the hate he's copping from a lot of places.
There's probably some validity to the criticisms of the jury and the scoring system - e.g. the press jury (I think it was them, at least?) placing Il Volo dead last in the final strikes me as being a bit of a tactical anti-vote, and Loredana should've made that superfinal given her high rankings in multiple metrics. But there's no need to take that out on the artist. On a selfish level, I'm almost wanting Mahmood to decline the Eurovision invite so that we have a chance of seeing Il Volo, Loredana or even Simone go instead; but morally and rationally (and because I don't really want to risk Ultimo being rewarded after all this), Mahmood 100% deserves that ticket to Tel Aviv.
Anyway, this is quite a bit longer than my normal song reviews, so for a TL;DR: Soldi is a good song. I'm just not sure it's my kind of good song, and I do have a little bit of sadness thinking about what else could have been. Hopefully the song will continue to grow on me (it's already around the middle of my rankings in an admittedly weak first batch of songs); for now, 6 points.
P.S. In a sense, I'm almost secretly glad that Simone missed out. His song builds so beautifully, and I'd be terrified to think of how they'd cut a full minute out of that.
