Please keep discussion in this thread specific to Eden Golan and her song, Israel's (potential) participation in Eurovision 2024 and discussions or remarks from other countries and organisations about Israel's participation.

Any further discussion of a political or humanitarian nature not relating to specifically Israel in Eurovision 2024 needs to go into the politics sub-forum. Thank you!

If we get banned
:de: will withdraw (-50% cash)
Morrocanoil will pull sponsorship (-25%)
Jews will boycott the contest (-10%)
If EBU can go off 15% of funding they can try

Germany won't withdraw if Israel's disqualification is rule-based (which is the case) stop fear-mongering.

EBU survived just fine after pulling Eurovision off from China and Russia.

Well, lyrics are and are not political at the same time. We could hear it from any other country and assume that it refers to a lonely/depressed person (apart from 'October rain' or 'Everyone is good kids one by one' which would sound strange). Nevertheless, taking into account the background and the fact that it's Israel that sends this entry, the political message is obvious.

Comparisons with Russia are arbitrary for me. It's not the same case and EBU can't follow the same approach. Besides, we all remember that in 2022 EBU didn't want to ban Russia at the beginning and they only did so after several broadcasters threatened to withdraw. This year things seem different, there are voices from the community to ban Israel but if I am not mistaken broadcasters haven't asked for it (at least so intensely).

I don't support banning Israel as happened with Russia but the lyrics issue should be examined carefully. It's on the verge of violating the rules, but I'm not sure they do. Maybe in dubio pro libertate? After all, people will be able to vote and show their upset, if they find the song inappropriate.

I mean, coming from someone who's assuming that there's nothing wrong in the title of an Israeli entry being called "October Rain" and even claiming that it ain't politics-driven, while it blatantly is, is kinda funny

Where were you in 2016, when 1944 won Eurovision
You just don't know huh?

Well, if you're so eager to know the truth, I actually already joined this forum and was spilling facts about 1944 already being a great song, but bore too many political references to be granted participation at ESC.

Once again, I personally don't despise Eden Golan nor her entry, since I hadn't the opportunity to listen to it yet (duh.), but the title and the lyrics are blatantly refering to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that's been going on since... oh my god, what a surprise, since October! xheat

Don't worry, the EBU won't have any problem to replace Morrocanoil. Eurovision is an international event, an TV institution since almost 70 years with very stable viewing figures. This is such an amazing exposure for any brand, especially in the grand final that they can easily find a replacement in 48 hours. Eurovision survived with the ban of Russia and Belarus, and will survive with the ban of Israel as well.

1944 was about the Soviet Union, a country which at that point hadn't existed for more than two decades. The events described in the song took place more than sixty years before that edition of the contest. And there was plausible deniability as well, the events described while obviously linked weren't 100% analogous to the 2014 Crimea invasion afaik.

The EBU just organized the contest in Israel, they're not exactly biased against them. I'm sure if the people writing this song weren't high on their nationalist farts and actually tried writing something with a hint of subtlety, they would have had no trouble getting their song through. Instead they went full Belarus.

If they leave, then good riddance. :)

OK so I think we (both I and I think @Israeliboy) both agree that Netanyahu is a Putinish arse who needs to leave power

You guys are right we don't need to be banned but an €2000000 fine will be right

Also don't subject an innocent girl to the mental torture of booing
That's cruel

Where were you when Georgia 2009 and Belarus 2021 were disqualified because of their songs being provocative or propagandistic by a political point of view? The same will apply to Israel because those are the rules. So sorry, EBU Is asking politely KAN to modify It. Will KAN refuse? Then Israel Is banned because of the competition rules every broadcaster submits before entering Eurovision. Full stop.

I think they will back down and change the lyrics, coz I dont believe they intend to lose the chance of appearing on a platform as huge as eurovision at a time like this

We all know Germany are just looking for an excuse to withdraw because they’d rather die than send anything remotely competitive. I wouldn’t read too much into any claimed reasoning
