I am probably the only one being proud that LOTL didn't have flags around them. I have no idea why they didn't (they certainly had their reasons) and I myself can only say that I usually don't feel comfortable with flags. I even don't like it at soccer games when they sing their hymnes (I never listen to it). Why is everyone so obsessed with the fact that LOTL didn't have flags. It is fine! Best decision ever for me!

Patty's song was outdated and that is a massive problem in Germany as well. We need a little bit refreshment. And I agree with everyone that there is need for a change but I'm not seeing it with our broadcaster. Thomas Mohr made a good statement btw...Hope he'll be more involved in the future.

Patty Gurdy's song would have been last with nul points... As I said earlier in this topic that sounded like a rejected and recycled ELUVEITIE's B-Side song, with weak lyrics and poppy music (most precisely in some parts Melodies of hope sound musically like a way weaker version of The Call of the mountains, which has only 43 million views on YouTube... No bueno) and when people would have started to make those stylistical comparisons, she would have been doomed. I'm still gutted LOTL didn't click with the televoters in particular: for once Germany take a risk and their entry bombed... So sad.

I don't think we need to withdraw to change our team/overthink our strategy though? Most countries did it without a break as well, and if they really need more time for some reason, they can still announce that next year is going to be NDR's final attempt before handing it over to a different broadcaster or something, and still participate without tanking the year completely.

Why should we withdraw if even countless last places (or second to last) led to fairly well viewing figures and the ESC fee we‘re paying is only a third of other big TV productions like "Tatort"? The cost-benefit-ratio is still good and profitable for the ARD/NDR. So we will never withdraw. And we shouldn’t! Who are we to complain? We even get an automatic spot in the final each year!

I personally would like to abolish our status as big 5 member and let us go through the semis but again, they will never allow that because of the viewing figures. They need people watching. And many wouldn’t watch a final without us. Also the contest needs our money.

It‘s ridiculous how people are all whining about Europe hating us.

Was Germany treated unfairly this year by Europe? Yes and no!
Yes, because last was F*CKING UNDESERVED this year!
No, because it’s the current system that leads to us being placed between 11-19 in almost all countries ending up last place! We were not hated by Europe, it’s the shitty voting system!

Was Germany treated unfairly the last yeas? The same! Yes and no!
In some years, Germany‘s entry was in the higher top 20 too but didn’t get a single point because they weren’t top 10. In other years we were bottom 5 in almost every country. And the songs were shit! Let’s be real!

Even Michael Schulte was overrated! It was the great staging/performance and the tragic story that was the main part of the success. Plus, it was jury bait. We all know juries vote for songs like that. Surprised televoters called for this.

I don’t understand why we just don’t have a normal NF with 10 songs of all genres. This year was already an improvement but far from good. Why can’t we put up an NF like a Silbereisen show with lots of audience, nice studio, great music, with really „show flair“? The Schlager pop songs in those shows wouldn’t work in Europe but you get an idea how a good standard beat the people cheer for sounds like.

Yes, but Germany won't overthink its strategy. We have a structural problem with our delegation.

True. It's the same kind of problem we have in so many branches and its so frustrating to see. In arts, culture, economics, politics...there's always big room for improvement but someone the people that constantly f*ck it up are staying in power because they're protected by the system and will do nothing to make room for younger, more visionary people that are able to take responsbilities. Instead, the average-Karens that are just opportunists can grow and spread their averageness everywhere. Thats what Schreiber is to me and all the radio people that decide upon the selection that is filled with Will Churchs, Rene Millers, Anica Russos etc. who are NOT the promising talents that Germany has to offer. But they're fitting the most with this very narrow minded idea of the german mindset of promoting the averageness.
I will not say that private institutions are the only solutions but when you could see how Netflix could make a phenomenal Dark with exclusively german talent involved you wonder why no public supported station came up with that before them. We had success when a visionary (Raab) was in charge. So we know how it works.

Schreiber, Gerling, Wolflast, Siegel, Stoiber...They all scream for averageness. And thats why I'm hopeless for a change.

One thing that I really want to change here in Germany is the communication. Other countries are already talking about their NFs, potential Sanremo entries, plans for Eurovision 2024 and here in Germany there is nothing. Zero hype from NDR. I remember a time where we even thought there would be no national final because they refused to talk about anything Eurovision the whole year after May. Our broadcaster has 0 passion for this competition. Now Eurovision 2023 is over and we are probably going to have to wait till February 2024 until some news from Germany. Eurovision always has high ratings. It's time that they show some respect and passion.

That's exactly what I mean. And guess why? Because no one from our delegation with responsibilty has a real passion for Eurovision. Their strategy is waiting until something comes up we might be succesful with. But do they have a plan? No. Do they really care about our success at Eurovision? No. And they'll never change anything because they are simply lazy and uninspired.

Love this band a lot although I've never heard about them. They are our amazing allies, really sweet, the song is on my repeat and Pi guitarist is such a cutipie, sweetest guy ever. ❤️

12 points from me.

I'm not wise enough to know what Germany is doing wrong as my music taste is quite alternative and often experimental. But I can tell you what I (we) personally feel is going wrong. Keep in mind we've only been following the contest a bit closer for the last few years.

Maybe Germany is too extreme and funnily enough not "too middle of the road" or average. When they go radio friendly it's extremely radio friendly. When they try something new and go with rock, it's extreme rock. After all rock is not rock and I'm surrounded by rock musicians and fans who don't enjoy glam metal. They however love indie- elctro- or more modern rock. I think, as an example, Smash into Pieces from Sweden would have done really well this year! To many, this kind of rock (Germany) felt quite dated. To a lesser degree even Australia felt a bit too classic or dated. And that showed in their televote score as well. Too much growling will never win juries over either, and one should find a song/band that will also be "acceptable" to juries to come top 5/10. I guess Australia's one, little growl was acceptable enough for jurors. They also might have gotten some points for their interesting instrumental parts (my rock musician fam thinks).

I was very happy to see Germany try something different, but I did have this worry myself... even though LOTL is popular and great within their own genre.

Please don't give up. Trying something new is the first best step in finding some kind of "right balance".

Much lovexheart

Sanremo in Italy is a religion, though, like Melodifestivalen for Sweden, or FiK for Albanians... They have the same or even more importance of Eurovision. That's why there are already talks about those competitions... They literally last the entirety of the year. It's difficult to create hype for a competition when it has not been there constantly in your citizen lives. For Germany the main dish has always been Eurovision, and there is one long year to go.

This is a very good point and sums it up perfectly!

Eurovision in Germany is as most lacklustre as it could be! No happiness, no glamour, no interest, no great stage in the NF, no great selection process, no great charismatic showmasters.

Let‘s take Germany in the 80s, their golden decade. We were probably in the top 3 most successful countries (maybe even first, I didn’t do the math right now but it felt we were basically everywhere).

My first ESC I watched was in 1986 but the first NF I watched was the one of 1985.
The song coming second in the end was one of my favourite songs as a child (Heike Schäfer - Die Glocken von Rom, if anyone is interested ;)). This song was on the radio everywhere!! You would hear this twice each day… and it came second! The success of the winning song (Wind - Für alle, which was evenly good) was the same. Everyone was talking about those artists back then, you saw them on every TV show after the NF.
Everyone was talking about Eurovision in Germany! And even the 3rd, 4th…. song was played on the radio here frequently. That was Eurovision in Germany.

I mean, we were basically the Sweden of the 80s. Ralph Siegel everywhere, always the same kind of song, writing songs to sell to others countries etc. People were fed up with him after a while so I am not surprised people do think the same about Sweden nowadays. It was good that he retired some day because we needed something more fresh. Unfortunately, since then, it just went down. No one cared, no one wants to take care.

Yup Eurovision and the NDR do not match ... there are many many problems which are mostly self-made tbh. It starts with zero visibility for the NF and ends with the actual Eurovision Semifinals being parked on some niche tv channels.
Almost 8 mil. people watching the final shows that there is still interest but that's going to die down sooner or later if the broadcaster doesn't put actual effort into all of this.

Guildo Horn and Thomas Gottschalk want us to withdraw.

Oh god, can they be quiet?

I'd say this could be a good solution:
Yeah, withdrawing is not the solution. Germany's problem isn't going to change if they withdraw now and then comeback some years later. The NDR needs to go all out next year, internal selection, spend some money on a good singer/performer and a good song. We need a good result next year. And I'm talking Top 10.

Or that but let another broadcaster have a go!
