Re: GEORGIA 2014

dreadful

We need an actual artist, not someone copying others in talent shows xshrug

Her voice is great though, and based on these clips it seems as if she speaks very good English, so with the right song (probably in English) she'd be a great choice. Just because she is appearing on this show doesn't mean that she is an impersonator full time :D

^ and tbh, I dont think it matters if you're a 'real' artist, as long as you can sing and have a good, suitable song xshrug

So you think she'd be a great choice based on her singing covers and impersonating in a "talent show"? Did you notice that you mentioned the most crucial part as far as ESC goes (= good, suitable song), last in your sentence? (as if it wasn't the most important here?)

So lemme tell you why I disagree and what my general problem is with acts from shows like these:

1) Firstly, her voice is so so xshrug, and since she's just "acting" and singing covers, what do we know about her actual musical personality? Like what can SHE bring to the contest? xshrug

2) English is already over-flooding this contest, and hearing yet another native English speaker wishing for more English is borderline disturbing/insulting. I dunno, but maybe just maybe it would be nice if Georgia could send something in Georgian for a change? xshrug

3) It does matter! This is not Idol/X-factor/The Voice (which are just insults to music!). I think those shows are like tumors infecting our mindsets about music and in particular they've infected the unique ESC concept (which should be able to stand on its own because it's superior to that crap).

People judge vocals and personalities from a reality show perspective, but what do we actually know about what these people from those awful shows actually can contribute? We have no "proof" so to speak, we don't have any back-catalogue of original material that might give us a clue about what type of song they'd actually could enter in ESC or whom they'd work with (which could give us another clue).

Picking someone, who have no back-catalogue, from these shows is like only caring about vocals but nothing else, I think we should be more focusing on songs (though vocals do matter - but songs matters the most!).

If you re-read my post, I never said 'I'd like an entry in English', I said that I think that Georgia would most probably go for a song in English based on their past entries ;) As for wanting to see Georgian in the contest, you got that in 2012 with a great entry but I'm guessing that wasn't good enough for you? xshrug

I personally love shows like Idol and X Factor, but I do agree with your opinion that you must have a strong artistic personality if you want to do well on them. I wouldn't vote for a generic singer on TXF who has absolutely no artistic direction whatsoever because I wouldn't find them interesting enough in the long haul.

However, you say it yourself. This is a song contest, therefore it should predominantly matter whether or not your song is good, rather than what personality you have as an artist. Yes, having your own unique style could be one factor of what makes a certain song great, but not all. This girl could do well with a great song as her live singing voice does sound good to me. :p

The Georgian part in their 2012 was minimal, plus it was a dreadful song

Well, I guess I'm exaggerating my loath for shows like that, but I do think that they've changed the way many view music (and ESC) and personally I don't think for the better.

Atleast we agree on that part, but I'm not sure if you got me correctly. What I meant is that I find "logic" in wishing for acts who atleast have some back-catalogue of original material to judge by, because it would give us atleast a somewhat clue or direction on what the potential ESC entry could sound like or what people would work on it. These people from talent shows who have no own material released and have no connection to any producers or anything, and quite often to artistic/musical personalities on their own, well to me it's like the whole concept of talent shows overshadows the concept of ESC.

I dunno if that made much more sense really, but sure people can root for whoever they want...

I think you are. In these shows there can be great artists, and horrible artists, just like in real life. In some of the shows the singers even write the lyrics, and rework the songs to fit their styles, which I think is good!
Anyway, I'm not a fan of talent shows. I might watch one here or there but it's not something I follow. Still, I think you, and other people, exaggerate a bit sometimes. I agree though, I hope people don't start seeing the ESC has a talent show, because it is not that!

Most of the acts in those show aren't artists, yes many can sing, but artists they are not. Often, the most conventional typical vocalists, are the ones that get successful in these type of shows (leaving the more interesting ones that actually might have some artistry on their own behind), so in that sense there's no wonder why most in these shows (even winners) flop in the "real world" of music, because people want something fresh, not just those "big waily vocals" they heard all over again and again.

I've also followed shows like these at a time, so it's not as if I'm against people being fans of those, though I think there's a tendency to bring that mindset to ESC which is a contest that is all about original music, but we can see lately that big "conventional" vocals can take you far even in ESC regardless of the quality of the entry, and yeah all people wanting these talent shows participants for ESC (when there's no material to actually judge by), atleast to me that is a clear indication of how these shows influences ESC, and we don't need ESC to turn into "The Voice of Europe", ESC is an original concept on its own merits which have been alive since 1956, no need to transform it.

A short statement by GBP says:

Sophie Gelovani and Nodiko Tatishvili, Georgian contenders of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) will announce the decision of Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB). They will name the Georgian representative of upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, on February 4 at 15:00 (local Time) in the Assembly Hall of GPB.

Oh, finally some signs of life from :ge:

Please let it be an interesting name xpray

I wonder when the entry will be presented though xshrug ... that's the most crucial thing for Georgia because they haven't really sent anything good following up their brilliang debut in 2007 (bar the decent 2010 entry).

Yes, pretty much just one (= "Visionary Dream")... "Shine" was decent enough, I hated "One More Day" though...
