Back in 2012 I uploaded a short cover of her entry to youtube and Kaliopi actually sent me a beautiful, rather long private message, telling me how touched she was by it and what the song meant to her

I don't suppose you'd be able to link that for all of our listening pleasure? I always love seeing covers made by the fan community, especially when it's not just from some anonymous YouTube channel.

Can't wait for this!!!!! :D

I really hope Kaliopi has finally a song that does justice to her, unlike "Crno i belo" and "Samo ti".

So, Macedonia is currently 27th in the odds. We'll see how gamblers will react to the song :)

It's Macedonia sending a song in Macedonian. The betting market will likely have little to no reaction at all.

The same kind of things happened with Serbia which sent a song in Serbian, and they won.
It doesn't matter if you send a song in a language which nobody understands, whichever it is.

That was nine years ago. The contest has changed a lot in that time unfortunately. Of course, it's still very possible to do well with a song in native tongue, but there's a lot going against those that choose to do so.

Was going to respond myself, but I'll let my wise friend's words here speak for themselves.

If either Polina did sing in Russian or Mans sang 'Heroes' in Swedish, they could still have pretended to the victory.
There is no point of 'years' because of the appeal of the song which wouldn't have changed a lot, it'd have even increased imo.

I agree with RainyWoods but I think "Moltiva" would have been a contender for victory no matter what year it was because I personally think its that good. It transcended the language barrier that the few native language entries of the last few years have not (except Serbia 2012). I think "Grande amore" might be the last gasp of breath for native entries being big contenders for a long time unless another rises to that level soon.

If Polina or Mans had sung in their native language we would be in a lovely Italian city in early May. And for Italy it was because they were singing in Italian, and a freaking OPERA SONG in Italian. It just sounds right. Singing a pop song in Swedish or Russian...not exactly a vote grabber.

Yes, never mind the fact they'd probably lose about half of their support from Western Europe. There's a reason why we only have four or five songs each year performed not in English.

Sweden can get away with anything these days, even singing in Swedish, their untouchable to the EBU. Russia cannot no matter how brilliant Polina was, there are too many extra factors.

Indeed, yet it's getting disappointing because of the lack of songs in other languages than English one.
However, I'm getting used to hearing many English songs in this contest, that's not something that I could blame. Singers are able to sing in whatever language they want to, even so this'd be more fair for countries which are always sending songs in their native tongue, such as France or Portugal or Italy.
