L'enfer et moi sounds totally French to me, and it's an outstanding song xqueenbitch too bad only the juries could see that!

toinou03 is right, that kind of pop is not usually here in Spain either, and it sounds crappy most of the times.

Actually, I find Amandine and Amaury very French as well, but maybe foreign people don't identify us in this genre ! :) Tenors like Amaury Vassili are amond those who sell most discs. :) AS for Amandine, she's quite unique in France, but I find her really French. As I alraedy said, I identify her with people like Zaz... Only Anggun proposed something really not French. I think she wouldn't released Echo as a single in France normally. And it's so different from the 1st excerpt she released of her album... Sébastien Tellier and Les Fatals Picards also released something very French ! :)

AS for ballads... The kind of ballads of 2001-2003 are seen as something really dated in France. And somehow, we only see these in Eurovision, no ? Actually singers like Julie Zenatti (who is steel among the possible names of the future) in women or Emmanuel Moire (rumored in 2010) in men, would be possible artists to sing one... But this kind of music fail to find any public, except if it's sung by Céline Dion ! :D But I doubt we see her in Eurovision again !
totaly agreed with that. Except Angun, all the french song since Les fatals Picards were very french :)

I guess the biggest problem France have is they are in the bottom group that automatically gets dismissed and overlooked every time because they always send something that is seen as too strange or out there from the general audience. Its not fully anti-mainstream but its still way too niche to make any impact. I get the sense that people feel alienated by the French entries that and that's why they constantly rank at the televote bottom.

Those ballads from 2000-2003 may be dated but they clearly still score huge with the jury AND televoters in the year 2013. Its clearly what people (jury and average person) want to see in ESC even if its dated. No harm in updating that formula for 2014 to get a few good results and get on people's radar. After a few good results you get the public's good side then you can experiment and step outside the box. You need to get people's attention first before you start doing other things otherwise you will continue to be ignored as you are now.

Look at the mid-tempo ballad Ukraine sent this year. It certainly wasn't traditional, instead it was a little experimental in structure but not too out there that it turned people off. Just enough changes to be considered different and not run of the mill same old same old.

I think it's the language rather than anything else, since they insist on sending entries in French every year. French is a language that's really different from all other european languages in a very audible way, it's not that they can't understand a thing like with Finnish or Hungarian, that's not even a problem, it's how it sounds.... it just sounds too weird to most people, and kinda annoying to those not used to hearing it at all, i really think that is a major reason.

Annoying? I've always heard French is highly considered as a beautiful language xshrug (and sounds kinda familiar to :pt:, :es:, part of :ch:, :sm: and :it: , that is, about 100 million people in Europe) If Hungarian can succeed, why French wouldn't?

France's problem is not the languages or neither the artist but the songs.

Eurovisions's viewers want simple ballads with a great staging and uptempo songs with a great staging, that's it.

That's doesn't mean we should stop, i love Amandine's song, but if we want to score more points we need to go back to France 2001,2002 & 2010

Totally agree, those were my favorite french entries from the last decade. I also liked Ortal, but knew it'd flop

Actually, Eurovision viewers are pretty open-minded (Hungary, Bulgaria, Montenegro etc.), it's just that the French entries haven't been really good... Amandine turned out to be pretty much a wailing mess without a clear melody... xshrug

If she'd entered something like "Incognito", France would have been top. 10 (or close to it)... but instead we got lots of screams...

France need good songs! France's issue aren't the language, the artists and not even the fact that they try different stuff and stay out of the box a bit, the problem is that the songs simply haven't been good...
