Re: FINLAND 2014

This song could quite well make it to the final if Finland select it and translate it to english

The use of Finnish is one of the reasons why I like this entry so much! It adds to the authenticity and charm of it. I think if they translated this to English for the contest then they'd destroy the song. so xnaughty pls

You are possible right about that, if people could understand the lyrics they might not vote for it!!! ;)

Re: FINLAND 2014

Could any of the Finnish forum members give me a brief translation of the lyrics to Sängyn Reunalla? I'd appreciate it muchly
Here's the translation from another forum (by user DaDaDam), which seems to be correct enough.

On the edge of the bed

In the bedroom, the pictures in frames turned at the table
On the windowsill, old textbooks keeps the flower up

Don't worry, you say and you push yourself into my side
I let you close, but it's temporary, you won't stay next to me

How we can make this to end, it would be easier if we would get caught
I'll comeback to you always, and I can't turn back from the edge of your bed
to home

Carpet on the edge of the bed,
I'll fit my feets into its two imprints
I'm at someone's spot, a man's, in which's pillow I'm searching for sleep

How we can make this to end, it would be easier if we would get caught
I'll comeback to you always, and I can't turn back from the edge of your bed

How we can make this to end, it would be easier if we would get caught
I'll comeback to you always, and I can't turn back from the edge of your bed
to home

The revamp of Lili's song isn't too bad I suppose. I quite like that song for some reason.

Re: FINLAND 2014

I think too much has been added though. The generic club synths that we hear just before the chorus are totally unnecessary and my biggest gripe. I thought the song before was very vocal driven, the punch in the chorus came from the vocals which were so up front in the mix. The backing in parts is somewhat messy now and less powerful.. and the bridge is now an instrumental which screams "*insert ass shake here*". I'm disappointed because the main reason I liked it so much has been stripped away.

I'd still like Jasmin to win though as it's an enjoyable song and she's a charming performer.

That bridge really worries me as well as its obvious its built in for some body movements.
The backing is crucial to the song and again it needs more work to get it just right. They need to be linking with Jasmin better.
Those club synths like you say need to go.Introducing those into a raw authentic edgy song is a huge mistake. The televote wont spot them but a jury will think "cheap".

I do though think Jasmin has a very good song and I love her natural delivery. It will depend if she can make it through the jury rounds.

Re: FINLAND 2014

Just listened to all entries:
MIAU – God/Drug: don't know what to think xcrazy I like some moments but I don't think it stands a chance.
Clarissa feat. Josh – Top of the World could make a guilty pleasure of mine  so catchy!
Lili Lambert – Let Me Take You There: so-so
Dennis Fagerström – My Little Honey Bee: cheese, cheese everywhere xfaint
Jasmin Michaela – Kertakäyttösydän: not my cup of tea, the best thing about it is Finnish.
Madcraft - Shining Bright: not bad but nothing extraordinary. A bit repetitive.
Softengine - Something Better: I like it :D
Hanna Sky – Hope: mmm...strange xD it has parts I like but then some others are rather meh.
Mikko Pohjola – Sängyn reunalla: xheart so beautiful xheart
Lauri Mikkola – Going Down: this one is nice!
Hukka ja Mama – Selja: not bad :p
MAKEA – Painovoima: I expected sth different after the beginning  don't like it much.

I'd say overall :fi: has a nice NF. Hope they make a good choice :D

I'm glad i'm not alone on this as I thought I was. It was very raw before which I found to be one of the songs most appealing aspects. Some of the new additions to the song feel tacked on. It's still a great, unique little song but it's dangerously close to becoming yet another club or dance number. If it wins (which i'm hoping it does) it will need an overhaul once more if they want it to be really special and quirky again.

Re: FINLAND 2014

As for the language discussion, I stick to my general opinion.

If a song is submitted to the Finnish selection sung in Finnish, it should stay that way if it's chosen for ESC. I mean if the intention is to change the lyrics to English, then why not enter it in English in the first place (afterall the language choice is free here)?

Also, Finnish is a cool language in music and it's a pretty unique language in a European context. Not many people knows it, plus it's not even a Indo-European language like most of the others. If anything, the Finnish language brings alot of character to these songs that are sung in Finnish and they would sound quite different if the language is changed.

Also, when will this myth finally die that all of Europe are fluent English speakers? In many parts of Europe the masses aren't that good at English and in some parts English is not even the second or even third most known language. Yes, it's true that English is the language that most people are exposed to, but that doesn't mean that they actually understand it. Also, in the end of the day what type of "brilliant" English lyrics are we getting in ESC anyways? Most of the people don't put much focus into the lyrics anyways, so can we finally drop this myth about English being so universal and that lyrics are so important in ESC?

I'm rooting for Mikko or Jasmin, since the Finno-Swedes most probably will vote for one of "their" acts (Dennis or Clarissa), I actually put my trust into the juries daring to pick something more daring and less generic for ESC.

My favourite is Mikko Pohjola. But I wait for live shows and make my decision after them. Softengine is also good.:p

Re: FINLAND 2014

I'm not rooting for a specific entry since nothing really stands out in here to me. But I'm sure that will change with the final live performances.

"Top of the World" maybe has that winner-sound, but damn the song in itself SUCKS. Really lame and repetetive hook, but after a few listens you almost forget. The performers also look good on stage.
"Kertakäyttösydän" indeed lost some of its charm, but I guess it appeals to a wider audience now.
"Painovoima" still has the best chorus imo. It's like a finnish version of Eminem feat. Rihanna  but the rapping would probably bomb in Eurovision, and it doesn't work for me either.

Softengine I could imagine winning for some reason...
