Injury and team news
It would be early to begin Kyle Walker, who is still not fit as he recovers from groin surgery. While James Maddison, who injured himself in the Leicester game, did not train with the team last week. Rice and Phillips formed a solid team on their way to the Euro 2020 final, but the latter has barely played this season, suffering a shoulder injury, which could allow Bellingham to fill in for him in the first game.

Iran’s Omid Ebrahimi will miss the game due to a groin injury, while Bayern Leverkusen‘s Sardar Azmoun tore his calf muscle, and his status is unknown. These two are Iran’s only injury concerns, with the rest of the team expected to play against England.

Players to watch

Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham, who has been intriguing for the club this season, should start ahead of Kalvin Phillips. If he combines well with Foden and Rice, he can help Southgate take the ball forward and create up spaces with his fluid passing and high-pressing skills to control the midfield and game. Bellingham deserves to be in the starting lineup against Iran.

Mehdi Taremi

Mehdi Taremi is a key team member, and the team will rely heavily on him. Taremi excels when the squad is under strain in big games and has scored several vital goals for Iran against big nations. Although Sardar Azmoun will be out, the Porto striker will have to take the lead in this crucial match. He is a seasoned attacker with devastating striking power who should cause disturbance for England’s defense.

Predicted Lineup
England predicted lineup (3-4-2-1)

Pickford; Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham; Sterling, Mount, Foden; Kane

Iran predicted lineup (4-1-3-2)

Beiranvand; Moharrami, Pouraliganji, Hosseini, Mohammedi; Nourollahi, Ezatolahi, Hajsafi; Jahanbakhsh, Taremi, Amiri

Injury and team news
Memphis Depay is comfortably the top-scoring international in the Netherlands’ squad but has been struggling with a hamstring issue since appearing for the Oranje in September. Van Gaal confirmed the forward would not start their World Cup opener as he continues his recovery. Denzel Dumfries and Marten de Roon remain doubtful starters for this match.

The efforts to treat the damage Mane sustained to his fibula on November 8 – including the use of a witch doctor – couldn’t get the job done and he has now been officially ruled out of the tournament. Abdou Diallo is also a doubt with a knee problem.

Predicted Lineup
Netherlands predicted lineup (3-5-2):

Pasveer; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Frimpong, F De Jong, Koopmeiners, Blind; Gakpo; Bergwijn, Janssen.

Senegal predicted lineup (4-3-3):

E Mendy; Sabaly, Cisse, Koulibaly, Ballo-Toure; PM Sarr, N Mendy, I Gueye; I Sarr, Dia, Diatta

Players to Watch
Gareth Bale

The legendary Welshman has provided innumerable moments of magic on the pitch for his country, on the biggest stage. However, the 33-year-old, is at the tale end of his glittering football career, after winning multiple Champions League and league titles with Real Madrid. Having announced his intention of retiring if Wales hadn’t qualified, he’d be looking to make a final point before bowing out of top-flight football forever.

Christian Pulisic
The Chelsea winger, hasn’t had the best time adapting to the English Premier League, with limited game time for his club. However, he’s always performed the big occasion for his country with 19 goal contributions in the last 23 qualifying games for his country and will look to continue in the same vein in Qatar.
