What bad things could happen to Moldova if they don't give the 12 to Romania? :|

That's not true. The Moldovan people are not forced to vote for Romania. Nothing would happen to them if they will vote for another country.

The "only" gave 10 points to Romania in 2005 ;)

They gave us 7 in 2005 and a lot of concerts from Zdob si Zdub where canceled here that year + they where hold two days at the boarder once because we played with visa's. Zdob si Zdub even excused in public because their country didn't give us 12 points
Nothing bad will happen to :md: but the artist that will represent :md: in that year will lose a lot of money as Romanians might cancel their concerts.

^ Well reading that makes me think about the Greece-Cyprus or Turkey-Azerbaijan situation, even if Romania can likely vote for Greece or Macedonia than for Moldova. :p

Well, I really hope that it is no countries that "has" to vote for a certain country, even if I think most of the diaspora discussion is so 2007! It is no surprise that people in UK often like the Irish song or that Turks that live in Germany likes Turkey, they recognize it from their own culture. People always look forward to certain countries for some reasons and often it is the neighbours song that, even if the song is just okay, they might love it anyway cause their expectations raise it higher.

Well, what the hell does the representative have to do with what Moldovans like...

Ask Romanian non-Eurovision fans! You know a lot of Romanians vote for :gr: only because it's the country we will spend our vacations? That's why we always give :gr: 10 points

I only voted for :md: two times. I voted for them in 2006 because I dodn't have Internet back then so their song was the only one I know before the show started. It was very promoted that year, it was everywhere and ,,Tornero" was not promoted that year at all in Romania. And I voted for trhem last year because it had that tune specific to Romanian comercial music so it was a song on my taste! :D

How was Manga representing Turkish culture? Rap and rock? :/

Seriously diaspora voting is VERY present in Eurovision and that's it, EBU just need to come up with ways of dealing with and preventing its impact as much as possible.

The problem with diaspora votes are the fact that many people tend to vote only for countries and not songs. If your theory was correct, then Turkey (for instance) wouldn't collect much diaspora votes the times they didn't send something with "Turkic flavor", and we can see that this is not the fact.

Now, I can get if people vote for something they feel culturally related to, but the problem is that people vote because of blind nationalism and not because of music.

Maybe the fact that they are very popular? I mean If I see Britney Spears or Shakira in Eurovision I wil vote for them as they are very famous here and I always want big names in Eurovision!

I would vote for Britney or Shakira only if they had the best entry.

Well, you'll see this year the same pattern will happen, and now they compete with a band not so popular, but Turkish diaspora will vote for it anyways.

Also I will never forget Germany's constant 12's to Turkey, were all these artists popular? I find this just an excuse for diaspora votes to be honest but that's my opinion.

Re: Eurovision 2011 - Semi final allocation draw

Nobody is denying that diaspora votes exist. That is why the pots for the semi allocation were created and the Jurys were brought back. Does it stop diaspora from happening??? Now, but it definately decreases it.

Plus 2010 was the first year where both juries & televoters had an equal say and it's difficult to see how much of an impact the change has had on the voting. We are all rather negative towards the problem especially since we're still thinking back a few years ago when no western countries managed to enter the Top 10.

The Top 10 in 2010 was quite diverse and pretty much most countries in the Top 10 did not come as a surprise as they were popular prior to the contest. My opinion is to not run into conclusion. That whole "These certain countries are guaranteed qualifiers" talk is all just speculation and I truly believe people may be in for a surprise.

Music is universal. We don't have to vote for something from our culture, and Rock has been a part of Turkish music ( Anatolian Rock ) That's what Manga did. Rock is more popular here.

Turks in Europe vote for Turkey cause of it is their homeland, ethnic or non-ethnic song doesn't matter for them, and we can like a rock, electronic etc. song more than a ethnic song. We don't live with only ethnic stuff.

You just basically just pointed out that the "prejudices" against diaspora voters are actually true!

Turks vote for Turkey only because of the country and that's it. This mindset is really killing the Eurovision spirit!

Sorry, but do you suport the Sweedish National team in football even if it plays bad? The same is here, you have tu suport your country even if you don't like the song!

I don't think you can compare football with ESC. The fans have not say in the outcome. If a team sucks they'll lose cause of their (bad) skills.
If a song sucks, it still does well cause fans will vote for it anyways.

So that's comparing apples and oranges
