My thoughts on the group stage.

Group A
Germany won the group as expected, great performance in the first game, not so much in the rest, but still I consider them as one of the main favorites. Hungary is a disappointment, I expected much more, although they were close to qualify, but deservedly they are out. Switzerland did its job, even more than I expected at the beginning. Scotland do not play well in major tournaments, did not impress with anything this time either.

Group B
Spain predictably won, Croatia was a big disappointment, I expected them to go far, I believed they could beat Italy, but it was their own fault that they couldn't concentrate until the end. Italy was very lucky with a last minute goal. They can improve their game in the playoffs, but I don't believe in their success yet. A good fight for Albania, but the group was too strong, at least they got a point.

Group C
Serbia was the easiest to predict in last place, they have many problems and everything they did was wrong. I expected Slovenia to go further and they did, Oblak is great, also a good team play. I was hoping that Denmark would be in 1st place, unfortunately they couldn't score against Serbia. Bright game in some parts, but overall more disappointing. And now, unfortunately, they have to play against my main pick for the title - Germany. Rooting for Denmark further too as they are my favorite team in the tournament, but it will be difficult. I don't expect much from England, but their opponents allowed them to win the group.

Group D

My biggest mistake was underestimating Austria in my last prediction. Before that, I believed and was sure that there would be at least the second, but the injuries of some leaders and the fact that sometimes the dark horses called by many fail made me rank them last. But already after the first game against France, despite losing I was sure that they would win the remaining games. Now hope they will go far. I'm not a fan of France, but I fear that they will improve their performance in the playoffs. Poland's quick exit is no surprise. The Netherlands, although they now entered a rather handy bracket, I don't really believe that they will achieve much.

Group E
Ukraine is one of the biggest disappointments. I thought they would be the first, but they came last, although with the same number of points. There was something wrong with the team. I believed they could beat Belgium in the last game but unfortunately... Glad for Romania and Slovakia, didn't expect much from them. I still think that Belgium is overrated and I don't think they will go far, but in the round of 16 I will probably cheer for them against the French.

Group F
When predicting, I forgot about the pattern that Czechia gets out of the group only every other tournament (1996 did, 2000 not, 2004 did, 2008 not, 2012 did, 2016 not, 2020 did, 2024 not). My mistake. I'm happy for Georgia, I didn't expect much from them, but they proved otherwise. I think they have the best goalkeeper in the tournament Mamardashvili and maybe even the best forward duo (Mikautadze + Kvaratskhelia). Turkey is very talented but plays a bit stupidly. Portugal did their job and all important games for them are just waiting for them.

So conclusion:
The biggest shock for me: Croatia and Ukraine out, the biggest pleasant surprise - Georgia... and also Romania. But I think it is the same for many...

Following the example of my predecessor, I will comment on the group stages:

Group A:

It was clear that Germany would win the group. It is the first European in unified German territory. It is difficult that they would have disappointed in front of their own fans in the groups. They also have a great desire for redemption. However, as far as the front-wheel drive works, the defense, although tough, is cumbersome and offers the opponent to strike. In my opinion, Denmark is a worse opponent than England in terms of characteristics but I believe that Germany will reach the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, unless Georgia performs a sporting miracle, Germany will not be able to avenge the 6-0 suffered. Spain is clearly stronger at the moment. Switzerland is a solid team, determined and knows how to strike with lightning attacks. Qualification deserved. Qualification, for me, is also the result of a football movement that is working well. Hungary, on the other hand, is always a little bit away from reaching the goal. Great potential but not yet able to assert themselves. Scotland has been hit by injuries to its key players. It was clear that it would end up being a sparring partner but you also grow by losing. Scotland will be assessed in the 2028 home European Championship.

Group B:

Spain demolished Croatia, crushed Italy in terms of play but not in terms of results and honoured the competition by crushing Albania with the second lines. Training the second lines is important for the tournament, it offers solutions and allows you to save your jewels. Italy, as usual in the group stage, was disappointing. Against Albania they were guilty of carelessness, against Spain they made tactical mistakes and against Croatia their trembling legs were overcome only when they conceded a goal. Against Spain, according to some of my Italian friends, Spalletti made a foolish mistake in proposing the same eleven that played against Albania (many of whom play out of position) and in not using the long reserve team he had at his disposal. Putting Cristante, Zaccagni, Mancini, El Shaarawy and removing Di Lorenzo bullied by Nico Williams would have been the best choices. And in fact, when some of these changes were made, Italy began to be dangerous and Spain, after a great dominance, risked the mockery of the Italian goal. Italy should not be judged in the group stage but in the knockout matches. They are like Real Madrid. They play badly, they seem on the verge of collapsing but in the end they get what they want. Once past the groups, penalties aside, they are a "tournament animal". I expected more from Croatia. I thought that the mix of maturity would have pushed the Balkan national team far ahead but nothing. The new Croatian talents are not up to the golden generation that is fading. Applause for Modric who at his venerable age is still the best by a long way. I hope to see Modric for the last time in the 2026 World Cup. Albania was one of the four classified teams that played well. Great job by Sylvinho. The way is the right one. Maybe they will stop lending players to Switzerland and in the future they will start to be as fearsome as the Swiss.

Group C:

England, before commenting on their path, I still can't understand why in national competitions they are considered a top team. Two finals in their history (both at home...). The first, which brought their only title with a phantom goal 👻, reached with a very biased refereeing meter; the second with a laser on Shmeicheal's eyes. Ok, they have developed the concept of modern football (because football already existed at the time of the ancient Greeks), ok between the end of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries they were the best (because they were the only ones to play football), ok in club competitions they are strong and prepared and ok I also add that they have had some good generations (that of '86, that of Beckham and the current one) but they have never collected anything but embarrassing moments. Their football is athletic like that of Denmark but with a more cumbersome defense than the second. A football that terribly suffers from ball possession (Spanish style) or tactics/physicality (Italian style). Their path in Euro 2024 was to put 11 players on the pitch and make them run. It can be good but not with the top players you have! I expect more from Kane, Saka, Bellingham etc in a group with Slovenia and Serbia and Denmark. Putting England aside, I was disappointed by Denmark who reached second place thanks to one less yellow card (the yellow cards on the pitch were identical to Slovenia - the yellow card that allowed the second place was one received by the technical staff...). Slovenia achieved a historic result. They managed to play as a team making up for the missing technique. However, it was painful to see England - Slovenia the snooze-game par excellence. Serbia terrible. Great champions, 0 ideas.

Group D:

France disappointed. When the arrows in front don't work you can see all the limitations of a national team that has a defensive scheme that is not up to par. France's matches were pure "catenaccio" from the 50s. I saw a sort of Slovakia all behind the midfield line but with champions on the field ready to spring like Usain Bolt on the counterattack. I think that in the knockout phase they will regenerate a bit but this time I think Belgium will prevail to the delight of Tintin. Extraordinary Austria! Great generation of footballers are pushed by a competent coach. Anyone who thinks that the other side of the draw is easy is very wrong. Disappointing Netherlands. Great team from the waist up, in defense they play oratory model. Fate gave them Romania, if I'm not mistaken. No national team is easy to face but it's better than facing Belgium, right? Poland, little to say. It's an empty mine. They are about to enter their dark post-Lewandoski era.

Group E:

Belgium with two faces: disappointing but at the same time willing. I saw that the team is cohesive and for me this is a plus point. Belgium since the recent golden age (not the first that masterfully used the offside technique) is a bit fixed in defense. There they concede but it can be said that in any case the Belgian defenders are hard rocks to move and their attack does not allow them to fully unleash your offensive strength. Thus helping the defense to suffer less. Romania and Slovakia, I put them together, are beautiful notes. They are fairy tales that we all want to see in every edition. Going through the round is already like having won your own European Championship. Ukraine disappointing. I expected more also because of the good players that are coming out of their youth teams. Last victory the Maurice Revello Tournament. A team that could have been the Greece of 2004 ended up making the figure of a team not up to par in a not so complex group.

Group F:

Portugal did their homework and achieved qualification and first place. They will probably reach the quarterfinals with ease. Great technique, solidity, a mix of maturity and youth make them a favorite to win for me. It is certain that, even if some good players will emerge from their excellent youth teams, their sacred monsters are fading. I believe that after 2026, even if they will always be fearsome, Portugal will emerge in a diminished position. Turkey enjoyed a truly poor group. The Turkish national team has some great talents but few ideas. It is a sort of England B. The Czech Republic has shown strength, honor and courage but with intentions alone they do not get anywhere. Georgia shows that they are in the midst of a golden generation. The only flaw of Georgia, it is not clear how to name their players. The surnames sound like tax codes or Klingons.

Round of 16:

I do not think they will be as predictable as many think. There could be a surprise.

Spain vs Georgia: It seems like a foregone conclusion and Spain will surely win but Georgia will fight hard and they have a style of play that tends to be deep that the Spanish national team could suffer.

Germany vs Denmark: Denmark with its organization and simple but clear game ideas can be a tough nut to crack for Germany. However, I am leaning towards a 2-0 for Germany. After the first goal the balance will break to the delight of the home team.

Portugal vs Slovenia: I hear that Portugal will be a walkover here. We will see the famous satisfied smile of CR7.

France vs Belgium: An exciting match, a derby with a Francophone flavour. In my opinion, Belgium will be able to get the upper hand and head towards the next match. The difference will be made by the defense. The Belgian one will hold the shock while the French one, exposed on the counterattack, will give Big Rom time to punish them.

Netherlands vs Romania: a match with a foregone conclusion? Yes. Only if the Netherlands wake up. Otherwise we will witness a sporting miracle to the delight of our Romanian friends.

Austria vs Turkey: an interesting match. Turkey could be prepared but I think Austria will win in the end.

England vs Slovakia: I imagine Slovakia will try to do well but the result is quite predictable. The mismatch is too high.

Switzerland vs Italy: probably, together with France vs Belgium, the most interesting match of the eighth-finals. The classic eighth-finals match for Italy: an opponent like Algeria for Germany in 2014, tough, prepared, in form. If Italy were to advance to the next round, for me they would have an easy path to the final. England could relive the same nightmare as Wembley against Italy. That is, being clearly superior on paper but in the end the Italians win. It is clear that German fans, in the event of a final, will want to avoid meeting the Azzurri at all costs. It seems that Italians, when they see Germany in football terms, become as crazy as a bull in a bullfight 🤣 I remember in 2016, Germany world champions vs the ugliest Italian national team ever. It was resolved only thanks to one of the Italian curses: penalty kicks. The match was so trying that the German national team subsequently lost to France, out of breath.

General comment:

These European championships are showing us how modern football is now full of tactics, stubborn construction from the bottom (which leaves room for tactical aberrations) and athleticism. On a technical level we are almost at 0, so much so that the plays of Spain, Portugal or the goals of Barella and Zaccagni are considered exceptional plays. There are no longer players like Guti or Garrincha or many others from the past. CR7 and Messi seemed like gods in the desolate world of football full of marathon runners. Dybala himself seems like a phenomenon. Put these players in the past and they would have been among the many champions or nothing special. Let's hope that football can rise again and entertain us. We need to reverse the trend that is making football like rugby.

Joachim Löw is currently in negotiations to take over the :rs: national team.

Changes are taking place already in our football and time will show whether Löw and the :rs: Football Association will come to an agreement.

Why does Tedesco hate Lois Openda?

I dunno... I would start him tbh, and it's not even the most shocking thing, man doesn't even start De Cuyper who's our best LB, he prefers to play Theate who's a CB, and against Slovakia he played Carrasco who's an LW 😭

At this point I think that Openda, De Cuyper and De Ketelaere ganged up on him and stole him his watch or something that's the only possible thing lmao

I hope that Switzerland will beat this lame Italian team today. I want to see Germany winning, but I can see this match going into penality. My heart says Germany (of course), but my mind says Denmark.

It is too early to say this ... but at this point there could be a surprise winner with Switzerland ...!

P.S. Congrats, Switzerland! Deserved!

We have been far from convincing in this tournament. Our attack is non-existant (both of our goals have been scored by midfield players). You have better players in all positions + you play at home. It would take a miracle for Denmark to go through :ROFLMAO:

My prediction: Germany to win comfortably.

In my opinion Denmark played well, but they play what we call "chances of death". I think we had good luck, but didn't play well. I hope we won't get butchered by Spain next match.

:it: definitely a disappointment. It was seen that this team is weaker than what we are used to from Italy but they didn't show anything. Deserved victory of :ch: .

:de: also deserved to advance. If we didn't have a millimeter offside when :dk: scored, things would definitely get more complicated. This way, I am happy :de: is through.

What one minute can do, unbelievable.but that's football. Such a shame for :sk: . :en: so far is below every level that is required for winning the title but I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the final at the end.

The other match.....everything went according to the expectations. So far, :es: still looks like the #1 contender to win the championship.
