I think Tanja could have a hit song... I see her as the closest (and only) competitor for Sandra.

For those who don't know much about Tanja or about her songs (no very recent songs in this video, though):

Is Norman Salumäe still the lead singer of August Hunt? If so, he has two entries.

He is ! :)

I don't believe Tanja may be a jury favorite, but well... she's a nice singer. ;)

MY PERSONAL PREVIEW, PART I

1. Tanja - Amazing
Very low expectations. Probably just another bland electronic pop song. She's a fairly known name in Estonia but definitely not for her own music. Juries won't like it and it won't have enough televoting support either. Will not qualify for the final.

This song has not been released yet but I expect it to be similar to this, which is fairly recent:

2. Sofia Rubina - City Lights
Most likely something I will enjoy but with non-existing mainstream appeal. Priit Juurman (co-writer) is known for (deep) house music in Estonia as part of Rulers of the Deep duo but in the recent years they have been doing more mainstream music. I expect this to be somewhere in the middle of that. Moderate jury support, low televoting support, won't qualify.

This song has not been released so some of their earlier stuff:

Priit Juurman's deep house project.

More recent mainstream track with Sofia Rubina's vocals.

ROTD wrote and produced Birgit Õigemeel's album in 2009, which remains the best thing she has done.

3. Maltised - Elu (Life)
Mait Maltis with his sons. No idea what to expect. Mait Maltis is known name for older generation for his schlagers. Not sure about his sons. This could go either way: surprisingly good on just terrible. Will most likely qualify.

Cover "Euphoria" produced on iPads.

4. MiaMee - Fearful Heart
No idea what to expect of this either, at all.

Liisi Koikson's previous effort, which I loved:

And an older song from her with I also love:

5. The Titles - Flame
Going by alphabetic order of the track names, this is the first one that's been released to public. I like it a lot. Probably won't qualify, but it should. https://soundcloud.com/thetitles/flame

MY PERSONAL PREVIEW, PART II

6. Sandra Nurmsalu - Kui tuuled pöörduvad (When the winds change)
Sven Lõhmus is very hit-and-miss songwriter/producer but Sandra Nurmsalu/Urban Symphony is probably his best project ever. I'm not expecting much this time because Sandra hasn't done anything significant after she became a mother in 2010 but this seemed to be one of the jury favourites and could surprise me. While not a huge name in Estonia, she will have a big televoting support and is definitely one of the contenders for the title.

Sven Lõhmus usually releases his EL entries in January but you all know who Sandra is anyways:

7. August Hunt - Kus on EXIT? (Where is EXIT?)
I expect it to be another cheerful and energetic pop rock song. While I'm not a big fan of them, I though they were underrated in 2012. Will probably qualify with another low placing in the final.

Reminder of their 2012 entry:

And another song:

8. Traffic - Für Elise
Another case where I don't know what to expect. Their 2009 and 2012 entries are not a good reference points of what to expect as those songs don't sound like their regular stuff. They do have a reasonable fanbase and will most likely qualify.

2009:

2012:

9. Brigita Murutar - Laule täis taevakaar (Sky full of songs)
Complete nonames, absolutely no idea of what to expect. Heidy Purga said it sounded cute. Has potential I guess.

10. Lauri Pihlap - Lootus (Hope)
He always seems to be at least 5 years behind with his music. The teaser he posted yesterday suggests it has really lame and generic "everything will be okay, you can do it, life is good" type of lyrics. Will qualify thanks to televoting and finish in the second half of the final.

Nice idea with the reviews! It sorta gives us "outsiders" an idea of what could come.

Listening to interviews with some of the jury members has made me rather pessimistic. It painted a very grim picture. It appears the record number of submissions was possible thanks to the increased amount of complete amateurism. Poor production values, sloppiness, lack of spark that's needed in a modern pop song were some of the keywords that came up repeatedly. No new ideas, techniques, no imagination. About 20 girls wanted to be the next Grete Paia by copying "Päästke noored hinged". But regardless, there was enough good material to fill the semis with 20 songs. About 15 songs got in after the first round of voting and the remaining five were chosen in the second round of voting amongst about ten entries.

One jury member, Valner Valme, revealed his favorites were The Titles, State of Zoe, Sandra Nurmsalu and NimmerSchmidt. He was suprised to see Wilhelm passing because in the end he didn't even remember it.

Traffic's song has folk pop influences and uses a mandolin. Maltised is supposedly rather schalerish and folksy.

MY PERSONAL PREVIEW, PART III

11. VÖÖRAD - Maailm on hull (The World is Crazy)
Not been released yet but I've heard the demo. It's hip house, electrohouse rap with male rapper (alias Okym Riim) and female (Tuuli Rand) hook "Maailm on hull, tunnen end hästi siin" (The world is crazy and I feel good in here). From the seven or eight entries I've heard so far, this one is a clear stand out with it's positive vibe and most up-to-date modern sounds. In Eurovision terms, it's a distant relative of Igranka, but more uplifting and with much better flow. Okym Riim is fairly well known and respected in it's target audience. I hope this qualifies. It really should.

12. Super Hot Cosmos Blues Band - Maybe-maybe
This seems to be a new project but going by the names, some of them more known for a metal/rock group Nevesis. This has been released to the public so I'll let it speak for itself. I don't think this will qualify.

13. Nion - Muud pole vaja (Nothing else is needed)
I've already expressed my dislike for this. Really dull repetetive sounds and repelling vocals. Maybe the reworked version will be better, they need to cut it down by a minute anyway. This will most likely qualify unless they really mess up the live performance.

I think they submitted this for EL2012 but didn't get in:

14. Wilhelm - Resignal
No idea who they are. Sounds okay, live performance will make it or break it. Won't qualify.

15. NimmerSchmidt - Sandra
They are a new duo, former members of a band called Laika Virgin who got into EL2011 semi but were disqualified because their entry was made public just few hours before 1st September, ouch. I've been following them since their first song was released earlier this year. I even submitted them for FSC but they were not successful in that competition. Needs to be reworked and cut down by a minute, there is much room for improvement. At the moment it's my least favorite of their four songs released so far. Will not qualify.

All their previous songs have been in Estonian, so I don't expect this to be any different.

Probably, it's just the title that isn't really giving away any clues. Though, NASA isn't either

How many times have they entered? I just remember their 2012 entry. I guess they're no pre-favs, but if the song is folky-influenced and atleast as good as NASA was, then this may be my big favorite in the end (only competing with Sandra probably).

Just twice. In 2009 they lost to Urban Symphony in the super-final. I think it was something like 81% to 19%.

Oh, for some reason I always thought Laura made it to the super-finals back in 2009! Well, this Traffic entry was bad as hell. But they stepped up their game alot for 2012, and I hope even more this time around (the description sounds promising indeed!). I must say that the juries saved the day in that selection, I can't believe we would have probably got the generic Laura entry if it weren't for the juries... Urban Symphony will remain a modern ESC masterpiece!

xshock See paëv is really a masterpiece IMO

They also had that one in 2008, which wasn't a great effort and not written by them...

Siver Laas is definitely a great singer. Ans Stig Rästa & Fred Krieger know how to do some music.

True ! Stig Rästa is a genius !
One should never forget he's also responsible for it :

but I don't really like him as a singer. Silver is way better (and very handsome...  )

MY PERSONAL PREVIEW, PART IV

16. Norman Salumäe - Search
He is the leader of August Hunt. I don't think he's done anything solo before so I have no idea of what to expect. Probably won't qualify.

17. Maiken - Siin või sealpool maad (On This or the Other Side of the Land)
She has been the vocal coach of many Estonian singers but hasn't done much as a singer/songwriter. Don't know what to expect. She can sing and has vocal abilities but I'm afraid she will use them in a bad, gimmicky way. I think she is the one to be blamed for turning Ott Lepland's Kuula into a screamfest. She went to Baku with our delegation and those changes were done there. Will most likely qualify.

18. State of Zoe - Solina
Don't know much about them but I expect this to be quite similar to Sofia Rubina. Will not qualify.

19. Lenna - Supernoova (Supernova)
Most of you should know who Lenna is either from Vanilla Ninja or previous Eesti Laul finals. Her new album was a big disapointment to me and I didn't expect her to participate this year. It didn't stand out on the album as a possible contender but now that it's been cut down to three minutes (album version is nearly five minutes long) it's more compact and works better. It has received a rather positive feedback in the last days and will qualify without a problem, but has no chance of winning.

20. Kõrsikud - Tule ja jää (Come and Stay)
As I mentioned earlier, they are profound and relatable to Estonians. Jury will love them and their popularity has definitely increased since EL2013. Looking forward to hearing this. The title means "come and stay" but depending on the sentence/context it could also mean "fire and ice". Let's see if they're going to play with those words. Possible super-finalists this time.

I know this doesn't exactly have much to do with Estonia 2014 considering the participants have been revealed already, but I hope Iiris will return to Eesti Laul someday soon! I found out about "Astronaut" this last week and I am completely obsessed with it! I just find it simply beautiful.

I did the same thing a few months ago. Have you heard Tigerhead yet? It's even more beautiful, if you ask me. Official video is on page 3 of this thread.

She's currently studying in London, so I guess this year wasn't the best timing. Hope she returns one day.
