xpray return. That's not going to happen though :( Czech public has no interest in ESC and Czech TV doesn't need ESC because it's the most watched TV in the country xshrug

If the EBU gave them £0 Admission Fee I'm sure they would participate with no costs unless a NF has been held!

Wasn't there a rumour late last year that Czech TV station along with Slovak TV were planning on organising a joint NF to bring interest back into it? I would loooove to see that NF.

I would love for Czech Republic to return and for the broacaster to actually try and make it popular, maybe with a NF, maybe with a internal selection of a famous singer. The problem with Czech Republic's previous participations was that the songs were all pretty much bad. Obivously they arent gonna get public interest raised if they send bad quality entries.

How about you look at it from the other perspective? They actually brought a big gun on their debut entry. Kabat is considered to be a legend in their homeland. And even Gipsy.cz, regardless of the hate they've received from Eurovision fandom, are doing fairly well on the local ground GIPSY.CZ Desperado OFICIÁLNÍ VIDEOKLIP HD - YouTube

It's not like they weren't trying, but they weren't blatantly trying to do well the way Azerbaijan does, to take the most extreme example. The Czech audience had reasons to feel bitter about the way their attempts were received. You can't blame the broadcaster that they didn't hire a Swedish composer to produce a winning schlager for them. In fact, i don't think that would even do the trick, but only confirm stereotypes about the contest.
Of course, on the other hand, you can't blame the rest of Europe that they didn't vote for Gipsy.cz. This situation isn't anyone's blame. The Czech taste and expectations are too far away from the Eurovision reality. Czech Republic and ESC just don't go well together. I believe it's best to simply accept it and move on.

The problem with Czech Republic is that nobody gives a ****.
In 2008 when they send a song who had ESC potential - they only got 9 points?
:cz: Czech Republic in 2014 - I don't think so. But i hope.

What? Did you see their performance in 2008? It was possibly the worst vocal performance of that year!

I liked very much the Czech song of 2007 "Mala Dama"! Even now I listen that song!

Czech Republic is a pity but as well. They were even the last "European continental" big country to enter Eurovision, on the same year as very distant Georgia... So they weren't very reluctant either.
And yes, the entries... Kabat may be a famous band in CR, but for me, as a French, it's 3 minutes of the most horrible mess it has ever happened on Eurovision. Have some fun was great but terribly delivered by girls who seemed more interested in showing skin than showing talent. And Aven Romale was very funny but again very bad delivered.

You can stay genuine in Eurovision, without sending schlager (even, we HATE schlager in France !). Look Estonia, the more genuine they are, the best results they achieve ! They are a great example. Even us French are rather genuine in what we send, though we often have terrible results !

Well then I hope we will have Slovenia Czech Republic and Poland in Eurovision coming back, and sending better songs also... Because we need 'em as well... But have zero illusion...

Let's be honest here, Czech Republic were a sorta mess in ESC.

Kabat's entry grew on me years AFTER ESC, so while I appreciate it nowadays, I totally understand why it flopped back then and the performance was really out of place in this context.

Tereza could have been a fun guilty-pleasure pop song, but turned out a mess with the desperate mixing of styles in the final ESC version aswell a messy performance.

The Gypsy mess I won't even comment on.

The very fact that it took Czech Republic nearly 15 years more to debut (unlike their ex-communist Central European neighbors) and the lack of commitment while actually taking part, to me is sort of proof that for whatever reason this is not for them... oddly though considering there just has to be a market in a 10 million country with various diaspora groups within for this contest to actually be atleast a somewhat public success.

The only chance for a Czech comeback would be if Hungary would win, and that's highly unlikely. Perhaps an Austrian, Swiss, Slovenian and even German win could trigger some small interest there, but again doubt it... they didn't come back when Germany was hosting it back in 2011 so.

I don't think we will see the Czech Republic returning (at least anytime soon). 3 failures probably result in no interest, plus now that Slovakia are out too, I can't see anything which will inspire them to come back! I hope I'm wrong though.

Having said that, none of the three entries impressed me (and I'm still under the shock of that Gipsy's superman tight-fit costume )

She had hot legs, and I don't care if she wasn't singing great!

So it's apparently confirmed that Czech Republic will not be back next year.

ppffff they haven't been trying it in a serious way in 3 years, and they cry because they were always in last place in the semi... xthink but when you send gipsy-superheros with kitsch costumes, a halfed-naked girl who can't sing and some bizarre czech rock song, you should ask yourself if your strategy is good and stop crying because Europe "doesn't like" you xshrug

"Vysielanie speváckej show Eurovision Song Contest neplánujeme. Naša účasť bola v minulosti vždy trochu problematická, čo sa týka výberu našich reprezentantov, aj formy akou sa tak dialo. Vzhľadom k tomu, že sme ani raz nepostúpili do finále, a vzhľadom k tomu, že vysielanie malo nízku sledovanosť, a že náklady na vysielacie práva sú vysoké, bolo vedením Českej televízie rozhodnuté, že sa tejto súťaže nebudeme zúčastňovať,"

We don't plan to broadcast the singing show Eurovision Song Contest. Our participation has always been a little bit problematic in the past, in terms of choosing our representatives and also even in the form this was done. Considering we've never managed to make it to the final, the low ratings and also the high costs for broadcasting rights, the management of ČT has decided we will not be participating in this contest.

Actually, the last part of the last sentence implies we won't be participating ever.

I agree about 2009 and 2008, but sorry, if sending the biggest rock band in the country, a band which has sold millions of albums (which is a huge number here) to Eurovision is not trying in a serious way for you, then our every attempt in the future would be seen as not seriously trying. Malá Dáma was a hit here. Paradoxically, all three of our acts became even more popular after their ESC participation xshrug

Sigh. ČT won't change its attitude to this contest. I don't even care anymore. dogmeat summed it up well in post #6.

I actually liked Kabat's entry, but the problem was the live-performance, they did a similar mistake to Netherlands 2011... they also sent a popular Dutch rock band, but they didn't connect with the audience and they treated ESC like a random music show, which it isn't... so I think that was part of the problem how it came across on stage for the TV-viewers.

Also, rock is not something that is successful in ESC generally speaking, and coming the year after Lordi won... I think many weren't too keen on another rock entry. I simply think the timing and the stage show were part of the reasons why Kabat failed.

However, the two other entries were just bound to flop.

I still think the Czech's broadcaster's attitude is lame since they never really paid attention to ESC and really put effort while entering. Czech Republic could have learned some from Hungary and Slovakia.

TV bosses change xshrug Maybe you will be back someday, but I agree that it's not gonna happen in the foreseeable future. Before 2007, nobody believed that Czech Republic would ever debut.
