x0sxslapxdownCyprus is wise enough to withdraw (unlike their neighbour)
Predictable but fair enough, Cyprus is wise enough to withdraw (unlike their neighbour) after all its economic troubles.
I agree with tuorem. It seems complete insanity to me to participate in such an expensive contest as Eurovision when not so long ago people were rioting in the streets in Greece :?
I have to agree on this. But really, the broadcaster have their own budget and can spend it how they like, and big showers like eurovision can act as a uniting thing. I assume eurovision is immensely popular in Greece, and doing well in that despite it being just an international song contest can help raise morale a bit.

And where does the public broadcaster get money from? People's taxes, that's where. Taxes that could be utilized in a different way.
Exactly. Plus many broadcasters that say we don't have money so we won't participate will actually spend the money on horrible low quality programming. The money is designated to the broadcaster by the government. The broadcaster can spend the money how they please. Its their money to spend. If the government reduce the budget then the broadcaster will have to prioritize and make cuts. eurovision may cost a lot in the sense of money but compared to other programmes and what they need, eurovision is actually very cheap for what it is.
