Even though I had low expectations of this selection since the moment I saw the participants list, I admit I got very excited yesterday morning knowing that the snippets will be released soon. I guess I was just hopeful that the songs might prove me wrong and be a lesson that I should not judge solely by the names. Unfortunately, it was not the case - none of the snippets managed to catch my attention and get my hyped about it.
Obviously I had the highest expectations from Nina and she is the only one that (no surprise) stood out. I am not blown away by it, but I stay positive that it grows into something much bigger and powerful in the remaining 2 minutes of the song. The song is called 'River' and the first minute feels more like a calm 'stream' to me, so I hope she prepared something turbulent as well. The women choir does a great job though and overall I am glad that this song is a new musical beginning in her career.
For the rest I'll just name a few:
- Reci mi - it's a decent attempt I guess. I am glad it was him who composed and produced the song (playing the instruments as well), some of the singers in the line up should take notes;
- Ocean of Love - I guess this is the type of song we would expect from Vincent Bueno? In any case, this sounds like the catchiest of overproduced songs in the line up;
- Blind - I guess it's his vocal that stands out here. He's really charismatic and I'm sure his live performance will manage to 'sell the story' (which may work in case of Croatian public but not the ESC one);
- Ma zamisli - for this one I have to use an expression in my language: Dua Lipa za sirotinju. Beta is so cute and her energy is contagious, but this song is a typical basic-random-Croatian-radio-festival entry and it brings no value to the selection. She deserved waaaay better entry;
- Zaljubljen - the 'klapa' way of singing is easy to sell to Croatians (I don't understand why) and I believe it is a strong contender. It has to be the most serious attempt in Dora's history when it comes to imagining and creating klapa music out of klapa box as this has a touch of drama and cliché Balkan ballad in it;
- Noći pijane - this one got me so excited, not because of the song itself, but because of HRT including this type of entry in Dora line up. Brigita obviously doesn't stand a chance with jury and tbh the song is pretty basic, but this is a huuuuge step for HRT to accept to stream such music genre live in their programme and hopefully a sign to broaden their horizons in the future;
- She's Like a Dream - here I'll just say: please DON'T win;
- Zapjevaj, sloboda je! - this ticks all the right boxes for the average Croatian Dora voter and unfortunately I believe this will be our entry in ESC 2021. It sounds pretentious and if they win in Dora, I'll be super happy to see them fail in May;
And I guess I may be one of the few forum members who never got a chance to hear 'Colors' before. Now that I've heard the snippet I can understand why it never found it's way to the ESC - it's awfully basic and bland, and I don't think any artist would be capable of making it sound appealing.
My final thought for this post: I'm afraid Dora will never grow into something more than just a basic local Croatian festival. Having 14 songs is too much when most of them are only aimed for within country promotion, and I don't understand how HRT aims to reach high in ESC when they give space for songs like 'Colors', 'Kriv' and 'Share the Love' to compete. If you asked me (no one did but still here I am), the perfect competitive Dora 2021 would include only 5-8 songs.
