I wish Christina Stürmer could come up with something as good as this

If I remember correctly, we only selected once in December, 2017 with Nathan Trent. I guess you need to wait until somewhere in February....

Of course I would be interested in some insider news too. Do we have any information yet?

The austrian acts of 2017, 2018 and 2020 were announced in december. Paenda 2019 was announced in january because the original act withdrew. And we know the story of last year. This year there is a new process or maybe again it is a tough decision.

So, I tried to get more recent information from Marco Schreuder, but he is absolutely not allowed to say anything about this that hasn't already been published in the Mérci Cherie podcast, although he already knows more details.
Does anyone know what Stefan Zechner meant about "questioning everything" when the new rules lead to increased block voting. Does he mean questioning the rules or the participation of ORF at all?

Ah okay then I was wrong! Well I can imagine that they are looking for a televoting pleaser now for this year. A good argument vor Visions of Atlantis? ;) (But who knows if they have submitted a song again)

Right now I can't think of any other realistic option. For Austrian artists, Eurovision might have become a bite more unattractive again after the recent fails we had since 2019...

We also need a good result this year when looking at the recent viewing numbers ORF had with Eurovision. 2018 was a very good year but since then they weren't that good at all anymore... I'm not afraid that ORF might withdraw the next year but with continuing failure and bad viewing numbers, this might happen again someday.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that Austria will have a thrilling entry again this year. Last year's song was great, just the live performance wasn't. So don't doubt too much!

ORF's new program director Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz seems to be a big fan of the ESC (and of Måneskin). She has the last word at ORF and I doubt she would withdraw from the contest. Although ORF is under a very tight financial situation, she can even imagine ORF hosting the ESC: "There's no question about it. If we had the perfect song now, we wouldn't say we won't send it because otherwise we would have to host the contest a third time . Of course we would manage that somehow".

She shared some good thoughts about Eurovision in the podcast. I do not agree on everything she said though. For example I don't think that our radio stations Ö3 and FM4 should be involved in Eurovision too much. Radio stations definitely aren't the right platform/ advisor when it comes to Eurovision. We also saw that in :de: for example.

Let FM4 organise the selection. I would give it a try.

I think thats why they involved the international fanclubs this year. But dont forget last year Halo was a fan favourite as well. I am quite sure this year they will choose someone who can sing. xmetal

No please not, I doubt FM4 has got any idea how Eurovision works. Then we might end up with something like PAENDA.

Well Halo would have done well with decent vocals and a better staging. The studio version was a banger.

That would be the idea behind it since the persons who have an idea how eurovision works were`nt really successful the last years. Better do it like italy and send artists who dont care about eurovision but just want to make good music.

But FM4 doesn't directly mean it's good music... ;) Also the comparison to Sanremo, interesting...

I would say since Cesar Sampson we had certain difficulties in the selection process almost every year, except for 2020 maybe. In 2019 PANEDA wasn't the first choice and they didn't directly agree on the right song. We all know how that ended. In 2021 Vincent was too lazy to write/ get a good song in time and then we got a rather underwhelming song (I guess with his 2020 we would have qualified). And in 2022 a good decision was made concerning the song, but the artist wasn't able to deliver the demanding vocals in a decent way live + the staging was a mess.

So I wouldn't directly say the people that were behind the selection process are the wrong people.

I can see how hard it is to find the whole package in a small country like :at:. Eberhard Forcher for example for sure wasn't always a 100% convinced about the choices that were made. But good ideas like Bilderbuch simply didn't work out...

Visions of Atlantis would bring top-notch vocals, a memorable performance (maybe even with costumes) and a song to remember (the first Symphonic Metal song...whilst we got some DJ collabs and tons of jury bait entries).

It's really easy like that.
You might be struggling with the juries in the final but it will be a 99.9% chance of qualifying.

The people choosing the song just meed to grow some balls.
