It would have been nice to see :au: and Dami win, she is a star with a gorgeous voice and song. Totally humble too.

Dami is in second place in my personal ranking, so I'm very pleased with this year's top 2. Australia is an asset for Eurovision and I'm looking forward to their continued participation. I'm sure they will have a great entry next year as well.

You don't need to apologise me because you didn't do anything wrong :) I understand that you are happy that your country participates in the contest and that so far you have achieved great results.

Australia's participation is violation of EBU's rules because only active Members of the EBU have a right to participate in the contest. To become an active Member of the EBU you need to be in European Broadcasting Area and Australia doesn't fulfill the criterion to become an active Memeber. Australia is an associate Member, but associate Members are not allowed to join the contest. You can see it on the following website: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/about/which-countries-can-take-part

The Australian participation, as you are probably aware, was intended to be one-off because of last year's anniversary (that's why Australia didn't participate in semifinals). However, this year we have got no proper explanation why Australia is allowed in. Moreover, EBU refused application of Kazakhstan based on the fact that 'Kazakhstan is outside of the European Broadcasting Area'. Someone asked them why Australia is eligible to participate this is what he/she/they got: https://twitter.com/ebu_hq/status/677802262887026688
This is definitely not a valid reason and there is nothing in the rules stating that once you have been broadcasting Eurovision for 30 years you might take part. The rules haven't been updated as well so for now the fact that Australia is participating is de facto illegal and shows pure hypocrisy of the EBU.

Yeah, as an Australian I am delighted about the result that Dami got. 4th in the tele and 2nd in the overall is honestly something that I'm proud and happy about.

and in relation to the rules...Thankyou! Now I do understand where you are coming from! I obviously am happy for the participation and I'd love Australia to continue in the competition but then if the rules of the EBU disallow Kazakhstan to participate then I would rather not participate. If the rules are being consistently looked on, on a case to case basis then that really isn't fair. Now we wait to see what the EBU and NTU say about Australia for 2017. Personally, knowing what I now know, I would not be comfortable with Australia participating unless Kazakhstan is also allowed to participate and even then I would be questioning the motives of the EBU and the future of Eurovision.

I don't know if this is widely known anyway, but for me the following was entirely new:

Back in 2015 it was the Australian Broadcaster who approached ORF as the hosting channel with the request to participate. Following this, it was the initiative of ORF to invite Australia to Vienna and they had long discussions with the EBU who finally agreed.
I learnt this in an emission on ORF just before one of the semi-finals this year, when Edgar Böhm (the responsible for the ESC for Austria of ORF) told this.

I don't know though who had the idea to make Australia a permanent contestant. But maybe it worked the same way and the swedish TV suggested this.

It's just a detail and it doesn't change anything, but I found it interesting, that it was initially not EBU's idea (as many seem to believe).

Having said this, I am very happy with the Australian entries so far and hope we will get more of that quality in the future.

I can understand that SBS wanted to participate and it made sense for ORF to agree to it. It meant more attention for the contest in Austria and that they could offer something new never done before in the history of Eurovision. This way they could top the interval act of 2014 and all Austrians know that Austria and Australia are often confused, so it was a perfect opportunity for advertising Austria. If ORF actually played a significant role in this, that would be great indeed. Australia is clearly very popular in the contest and they make an effort to send something great every year. They will not be forced to leave the contest considering their popularity.

You're correct - I saw in an interview with our HoD the other day that it was SVT who invited us back for this year. Glad to see multiple broadcasters supporting us, though if our continued participation is reliant on year-by-year decisions from the host, there's every chance we might not be invited back next year, so that worries me a little. Still hoping though - these last two years have been a blast as an Aussie fan!

Anyone else was annoyed by the lyrics?

I mean how much stupider can it get than "My heart beats to the sound of silence"?
And then repeating it over and over shouting it in the loudest way possible.

"I went outside and stared at the dog" Goodbye to yesterday, estonia I think. no one from estonia find this offensive please but surely you are humoured yourself by it

It was repetitive, songs can be repetitive, but this was slightly too repetitive perhaps, I'm glad it was 4th most popular on the public vote was it, so it finished 2nd overall. Didn't deserve a 109 point lead at the half way mark, Juries were too generous, so many 10 points and 12 points, yet to russia not generous enough.

This masterpiece should've won! It fits right in with other winning songs lately. It's rare a song is better performed live than on the music video.

And what breaks my heart the most is that no one ever wins after being a runner-up :(

Still crying about DAMI, my winner. Sure - we won't see such a high level entry and we won't hear such wonderful song for a long time ago - at least while such terrible entries like Jamala or Wurst will be winning ESC. Once again I have to say - it was a masterpiece, the best Eurovision entry the best Eurovision ballad even better than Yohanna with "Is it true".

Sorry if my post offends anyone, I don't care which country it is or if Australia should/should not participate but the song would be really a big disappointment of victory if it won. Not that Ukranian song is amazing, but Australia's song is way more boring. I don't get how it could even win jury votes.

I felt like last years entry represented them better culturally, which is also what I look for.

It has happened a lot in the past, the last time was :de: being 2nd both in 1980 & 1981 and finally winning in 1982. ;)

I get the jury votes, this wouldn't have won the jury votes if it wasn't Australia (maybe another rich Western country but surely not by any country).

I love how people call a meh standard soulless ballad "masterpiece", but I respect different taste, I simply can't hear it myself though. This song is so empty of any genuine emotion.
