Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

Thank God for the juries because I believe Mikey Graham is the fave so far.

So hopefully the juries could aid Niamh to the win.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

esctoday.com interviewed Leanne Moore:

Congratulations on qualifying to the final of Eurosong 2010. If you were to represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest, what would that mean to you personally?

I'm a big sports fan, mainly rugby, and I always feel the passion of the players as they line out in the Irish jersey ready to play for their country. I've always thought that must be an amazing feeling. If I was fortunate enough to be able to do the same (represent my country I mean, I'd be useless at rugby!) it would be both an honour and a privilage, something I would take very seriously and hold close to my heart. Opportunities like that don't happen everyday, I would just embrace it.

You are the winner of the sixth series of RTÉ's You're A Star in 2008. Tell us a little bit more about this experience and how you won the hearts of so many people in Ireland.

You're a Star was both the best and worst experience i've ever had. For me it was confronting fears each and every week on live TV. Essentially it made me the person I am today. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would win. I took each week as it came and dealt with the emotions that brought. I have amazing memories from the time and learned some really great life lessons.

Besides being a singer, you are also studying as a journalist. If you had to choose, which of those two careers would you prefer?

Oooooo!!!! I'm studying Journalism and Media Communications. Ultimately I'd like to present on radio and TV but writing has always been a passion of mine so Journalism was a great choice. I suppose if I had to choose, from a steady career point of view my head would say all of the above mentioned, but my heart would say singing.......

Back to your bid for the Eurovision Song Contest: What is your song 'Does Heaven Need Much More' about? Can you relate to its’ message?

Its a beautiful song with a beautiful philosophical meaning! Something that may never be answered. The lyrics refer to the romance and love between two people and questions whether heaven can offer more than that blissful state!

Your song has been written by two previous irish song-writers in Eurovision 2007, namely John Waters and Tommy Moran whose song 'They Can't Stop The Spring' which came last in the final. Does that fact put any extra pressure on you to be more successful?

I don't read into all that! I don't feel any pressure apart from the pressure I place upon myself to do my best! The past is the past and I look to the future!

How are the preparations for your performance on March 5th going? What can we expect?

Preparations are going strong! It's so exciting when the ball stars rolling! Its a great uptempo song so I'm hoping to just do it the justice it deserves!

In your view, who will be the one to beat at the Irish national final?

Everyone is equal! Thats the way in any competition. I don't read into favourites. Thats an unhealthy frame of mind to have! I've not heard any of the other tracks, but I was delighted to meet Niamh Kavanagh! She was my all time favourite winner!

What are your future musical plans after Eurosong 2010?

I've spent the last year writing some material of my own with Eleanor Mc Evoy and also recording tracks by some really talented songwriters including fellow Limerick man Richard Lynch. I think its healthy to keep being creative in that way. I don't make plans! They never work out!! All I've worked on is varied and very different but I just really enjoy being a part of it.

What is your favourite colour and why?

Um..... Navy I think. I've always loved blue so this is like an extension of that. And green of course ;)

Finally, what message would you like to send out to our readers at esctoday.com?

Eurovision Abu!

Slan leat xxxxx

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

esctoday interview with Niamh Kavanagh

First of all, congratulations on qualifying to the irish national final once again! How does it feel to be back in the Eurovision race with the possibility of representing Ireland for a second time at the Eurovision Song Contest just being a heartbeat away?

It is fantastic to be involved again. I am pretty surprised I am back in the saddle so to speak. But it is very exciting. Things have changed so much since I was involved in 1993, and yet it feels the same. The one thing that totally overwhelmed me was the reaction to the submission of It’s for you. It has been so positive, despite not hearing the song. I am so pleased and surprised that people are happy to have me involved again. It was an honour to represent Ireland once, to be in with a chance of repeating that is brilliant.

Having won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993, you already know how the competition works. Eurovision has changed its format somewhat in recent years. If you were to represent Ireland this year, do you think that the 1993 Eurovision experience will help you with your endeavour to represent your country the best way possible?

That is slightly difficult to answer, after 17 years the competition has changed. But essentially it is the same. The main job for me is to sing well, to sing the best I can, whilst representing the country, both in music and press. I am not as sure that being involved before helps as much as the years of experience I have had since. One thing that does help though is that I already know most of the people involved. It’s like a coming home party to revisit with all the fans and other entrants and delegate members who might still be involved.

Despite having a successful singing career, you took time out of your life to create a family. Now your back singing, what are your new goals in life?

Although I have always kept singing, I did scale back to be a part of my children’s lives. What a fantastic journey this has been. Now that they are older I feel they are ready to see me a bit less! I am also hungry to get back properly into the studio and tour as myself again. My plans for this year regardless of what happens at Eurosong, is to record a new album and tour the country and beyond. Re-establish myself. I have been lucky that my voice has aged well I think, and I am discovering new things about it all the time. I have been working with some wonderful writers and it’s about time I got back out on the road!!!

Let’s talk a bit about your song 'It's for you.' The song hasn't been made public yet, as far as the genre is concerned, what is it? Please tell us about the process of creating your song for Eurovision and what message does it convey?

It’s for you is a ballad. Hardly surprising I suppose. I just love this song. After much conversation with Niall Mooney about what might do well for Ireland in Eurovision, he laid the gauntlet down and so I agreed if we found the right song I would enter again. After much too-ing and fro-ing (is that even a word!) we arrived at a rough version of the song. Something in it caught me. So I drove down to Galway from Carrickfergus on one of the worst weekends for snow!! I did a vocal in Niall’s house to give an idea of where I saw the song going and what kind of structure could be in it. It was then sent to Marten who produced a fantastic track adding his special talents, then we met again in Dublin to produce the final vocal. It was a different way of working but very successful so far. Of course I will really only know how successful when it’s heard and people respond. I would like to say that regardless, I am very proud to be a part of this song and its journey.

How are the preparations for your performance on March 5th going? Will there be any notable difference compared to your style of performance at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993?

Well staging will suit the song. I am not dancer of the year, and thankfully the song is a ballad, so no major choreography. I would reckon there will be similarities to 'In your eyes' as it is really about singing the song and allowing people to hear how lovely it is. I am lucky to have two fantastic singers joining me on stage. Nikki Foy Kavanagh and Ed O’Leary. I have worked with Nikki plenty and they are both wonderful singers in their own right. It is such an honour that they have agreed to come work with me on this. Preparations are also in motion for the costume, those that know me know this is not a big priority for me as a rule, but I will be making a special effort, if only to keep my mother happy!!!

You are one of the bookies favourites to win this year’s Irish national final. What is your opinion on that? Does that make you nervous or are you confident about your chances?

Okay, well, this one is a simpler answer. No matter what bookies or anyone else says this competition could be anyones. We haven’t heard all the songs, and this year is no easy competition. There are strong entries, which will be good for the song that makes it through. A better test for the singer and song. I also know some of the performers and they are all fantastic. We are all pretty different, which can only be a good thing for Eurosong. I am not at all nervous about the show, as a matter of fact I am really looking forward to having a great fun day with everyone. Last Eurosong I did we all sang songs in make-up and had real fun. I hope we can do the same this time. I only do the job in front of me and the job in front is to sing well on March 5th after that is up to all the voters.

In case you win, are you planning on releasing other versions of It's for you?

I will of course release a version of It’s for you if we win Eurosong. It will be necessary for the next stage. But I would like to think that this song has a future no matter what happens.

In your view, according to reputation, who will be the countries to beat in Eurovision?

This changes every year, surely it depends on the song. Until the last song is selected we will not be able to gauge what will work this year. We could argue it’s more likely to be this country or that, but who can really predict until we know what the songs are. The eastern European countries have been strong over the last decade and that is hardly surprising. They move around other countries more than we do and they care a great deal whether they win Eurovision. To be honest if I move to the next level I will concentrate on performing well on the semi-final and then if we make it past that to the final the job stays the same. I am hoping that when all songs are in and we are in it that other countries will say that we are the ones to beat!!!!!

What is your favourite colour and why?

My favourite colour is green, actually this year it has been an aqua colour. I am not sure why, but I seem drawn to it. Must be my earthy nature!

To conclude this interview, do you have a message for the readers of esctoday.com?

My message is please vote for the best song and performance on March 5th, be it mine or any other on the night. I would just love to see Ireland reach the final and do well with a strong entry. Thank you for all your support over the years. I have always had some of my best times with ye all. Great fun and games still to be had. See you all very soon.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

esctoday.com continues their interviews the the NF finalists. Next up is Monika Ivkic

First of all, congratulations on qualifying to the irish national final - Eurosong 2010. Please tell us a little bit about yourself, how you got involved with the music business in the first place.

Thank you. I'm Monika Ivkic. I'm originally from Bosnia and now live in Austria. I've always loved music. When I was 15, I took part in my first casting show. Unfortunately, I was disqualified during the recalls because I didn't meet the minimum age requirement (and perhaps hadn't been quite as truthful about my age in my application as I should have been). In 2008 I finished fourth in the German version of Idol. Since then I've focused on my own music and collaborated with various artists from the U.S., Germany and Austria. I can't tell you how thrilled I am about the opportunity to perform in Ireland.

You decided to enter to represent Ireland this year even though you were born in Bosnia and living in Austria. What would it mean for you to represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest?

It would be a huge honor to represent a country as successful as Ireland. As for my own nationality, I don't think it really matters where an artist comes from or where he or she lives. Nobody would say Chelsea isn't a U.K. football club only because it has players from Germany and France.

Your song 'Fashion Queen' is said to be a typical Beyoncé Knowles style number. What does the song mean to you personally? Can you relate to its' message?

I love Beyonce, true, but "Fashion Queen" isn't all that similar to the stuff she does. Obviously, I like to wear nice clothes, and you'll see that in the performance. The song is an uptempo number that's primarily meant to be entertaining. If you wanted to read a message into it, you might say it pokes a bit of fun at our culture.

The Eurovision Song Contest is extremely popular in Ireland, especially after a record seven wins. How much of a fan are you personally and what does the contest mean to you?

I watch Eurovision every year, and yes, I'm definitely a fan. For a newcomer like me, the opportunity to sing on a stage on which some of the biggest names in the business have performed on is just fantastic.

Do you think the Eurovision Song Contest would an acceptable way to represent and to express music you love?

Why wouldn't it? It's a unique opportunity to perform in front of millions of people. Unless you're Madonna and go on a world tour, you'll never have the chance to entertain an audience like that.

Let's talk a bit about the national final to be held on March 5th. How are the rehearsals going? In your opinion, how big are your chances of winning and who do you see as your main competitor for victory?

Clearly, it's a strong field, but I think with "Fashion Queen" we have a great song with a unique concept, so let's see what happens. Our focus right now is to come up with the best possible performance. I'm lucky to work with a great team, and we're having a lot of fun.

What can we expect from your performance on Eurosong? Will there be alot of dancing?

Of course. What else do you think a fashion queen would do on stage? ;)

After Eurosong 2010, what are your future (music) plans and, incase you won't win, will you be back at next year's Irish national pre-selection?

Again, my focus at the moment is March 5th, and I try not to think of too much else. It's a great opportunity to perform in Ireland, and I hope we can convince the Irish people that we'd be a worthy representative of their country. Everything else is for another day.

What is your favourite colour and why?

Red because it's a sign of strong emotions, and that's how I am, that's how I feel about music.

To come to the conclusion, what message would you like to give to the readers of esctoday.com?

Well, I hope you'll like "Fashion Queen". See you on March 5th, and enjoy the show!

Betting is on offer for this Fridays Ireland making your mind up. Looks likely between them.

Mikey Graham is odds on at 4/6 then Niamah Kavanagh at 5/2.

Boylesports and Paddy Power are Irish bookmakers and will have a good indication on what is going on. You can get free bets with them through a variety of websites. Google - Irish Eurovision Betting.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

The show has just started. They played Et Cetera.

... mmm, I wouldn't refuse from 2000 euros

... Fairytale.

blah blah blah, whinining about results in the 00's and Et Cetera again, lol.
oh yeah... she was so brilliant .... yeah, stop whining gawd dammed, if she (or they to be more exact) qualified last year they would got their last place in the final and you'd sat in the studio and whined all the crap out even more

songs! Thank Gawd!

Leanne Moore - Does Heaven Need Much More? ... uhhmmm. Sweet pink pop song. Imo, it doesn't have any chances to qualify, cliche lyrics (forever-together, lol). Hmmm, I like how the music stops in the middle.
Yep, I agree, it's rubbish. Imo.

Lee Bradshaw - River Of Silence ... something middle between Bryan Adams and Garry Barlow though Lee has not so good vocals. I'm not sure if it can do well on ESC but it's better than Leann Moore. I like the chorus.

Michael Graham - Baby, Nothing's Wrong.... such a boring ballad, nothing special *yawn*

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

Monika Ivkic - Fashion Queen... swing  I like its music... though lyrics is total disaster. She sounds like Beyonce.

Niamh Kavanagh - It's For You ... I like piano in the beginning. Though we already have many ballads this year, hmmm. Mmmmm, I like this folk feel and violins. This song is MILES better than everything in the NF, imo.
I'm not sure if she can win ESC again but Ireland will qualify, I guess.

Hmmmm, I didn't like Niamh's song at all I'm afraid. Very dull.
I'm going with Monika Ivkic. Her song was the best even if it does sound very much like Christina Aguilera's Candyman.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

^ exactly, I was thinkng about this song but I couldn't rememebr the title. Like Beyonce with a weaker voice singing Candyman.
Though I agree that it's something different for Ireland on ESC. And something different for ESC 2010 so far.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

I think out of all the songs it is the most likely qualifier IF it translates well onto stage.
I can't see Ireland going for anyone other than Niamh though ;)
Her voice sounds different on this particular ballad. I always liked 'In Your Eyes' because it has a bit of a soul sound to it but that seems to be lacking here. Shame :|

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

Niamh has to win!!

I can't believe that Mikey is the favourite, obviously the high odds are on name alone because his song really isn't up to much at all.

Unfortunately in the last two years the act I've wanted to win either comes 2nd or 3rd (Not Crazy after all & Out of control)

If Mikey wins........tbh I don't really know how I'll feel but it won't be pleasent.

Re: ÉIRE - Ireland 2010

Niamah is now favourite 4/7 but i still the Boyzone fans will propel Mikey 7/4 to Norway. He is the value anyway from a betting point of view. This should be a lively betting market as it is on RTE and we know the Irish love betting. Good luck to everyone.
