Noooo they'll make SuRie perform as 2nd or 3rd, I'm sure. I think a stronger and more uplifting entry from semi finals will open the show.

Yeah my first thought when I saw the first half draw - death slot here we come! And we'll have someone like Norway or Cyprus in the opening slot so that SuRie will seem completely damp in comparison. :(

Ever the optimist

We are going to be given a bad position early on at some point, it's only fair. I would rather we got given it a year like this when we have no chance instead of another time when we actually have a decent entry.

Watching the last couple of ESC finals on YouTube, a question that I've never asked here occured to me and I'm wondering if anyone here knows...

The hosts always say that you can vote by phone or SMS, but the UK viewers never have the option of of sending an SMS. Wonder why that is, as I think more casual viewers would be inclined to send an SMS instead of calling. C'mon BBC, it's the 21st century ;)

She seems like a truly wonderful person but sadly the song is extremely weak :( I am really hoping for a truly smashing :uk: song every year (the last one was in 2011 for me) but, hopefully 2019 will be that year.

2 points.

Yes it is indeed very odd that they don't use it now. I actually discussed it with someone the other day who was asking why I voted with a phone number and not sms. You're right, more people would vote via SMS than they would with a phone call, and even more with the app... We actually used to have sms voting in our NFs so it's not like they can't do it...

I have a feeling this will do better than most expect. I actually like the song. Bad for her it‘s such a strong year. Last year she would have been in my top 10 for sure. I don’t get why it‘s that unpopular, it‘s the song that screams „Eurovision“ the most. I think Surie seems to act a little stiff on stage, maybe that‘s why. But I can totally see this between 8-15! (Of course it could happen to be last. This year nothing is impossible!)

The BBC website explains why they don't use SMS voting:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3v15fWmwkFysm2Z0xJMSlPD/voting

5. Why are you offering voting via Mobile Short Dial Codes instead of Text Voting?

Text voting cannot be included in the Eurovision Song Contest UK vote due to the relatively short periods in which the vote is open and during which the result needs to be provided and verified. There is the risk of potential delays within the mobile networks at busy times which could result in text votes not being received within the period the vote is open. With a phone call, if the exchange is busy you will hear an engaged tone, however with text/SMS you would not know if there is any late delivery of your vote (causing it to not be registered). There are no such potential network delays with Mobile Short Dial Codes other than busy tones at local exchange level with heavy traffic.

In addition, call attempts to Mobile Short Dial Codes outside of the vote open period, or to numbers no longer in use, are non-chargeable to callers, unlike text where charges may still apply.

The advantage of using telephone calls for voting rather than text voting is that the caller knows at the time of the call that their vote has been counted and also that they have been charged for their vote. They will also know from receiving an engaged tone if they did not get through and that they can then just press redial to try again. The same is not true of text voting as the texter has to wait for a confirmation message back from their mobile network operator which may take some time to arrive or which may not arrive at all.

This article 2008 also gives some insight into why we don't have Text voting in the UK, but ultimately it basically all stems from a phone phone/txt scandals between 2006/2007 on TV competitions on the BBC/ITV.

I will be at the contest not waving the British flag, not because I don't like the song I just decided like my friends to pick the flag of the country we like the most. I do have that nagging sense i should be supporting our country but in reality its a song contest and the best song in my opinion is best to support lol. Our hotel even emailed and asked what flag we wanted lol Portugal are going Eurovision crazy this week lol

Yeah, Scott Mills or Rylan mentioned this during the Austria postcard that rumour had it that we had rejected the song for our National Final ;)

Lol if it is really true then I am in total shock. I don't think think Austria is anything particularly worth writing home about, but it's a much stronger song than anything from our NF. How many other songs got rejected that were stronger?

I now think that, with some unlikely qualifiers from semi 2, that the UK may not be in the bottom 6 this year, after all Storm is far from bad, and SuRie's vocals are bound to be on point.

I strongly believe that a pre-contest, online vote from a selection of say 36 songs with the top 6 advancing to the live National Final would be a good idea. It might help boost public interest again, and help to give a strong line-up that the public can be fully behind since they've had a hand in shaping the selection ;)

Yes I quite agree, there is clearly something wrong behind the scenes if the BBC (or Hugh Goldsmith rather...) is ignoring quality songs. I thought it was kinda a shock how France were able to put on the strong NF they had after a couple of decent results, So there is no reason we can't. Personally I think BBC Radio 1 should take over, and Radio 2 be set aside. Radio 1 will give us more modern and quality songs and get more interest. OGAE need to be evicted from the process completely imo. An online vote can't hurt either.
