Since it's confirmed now that it will be in English, I think we can rule out "Russian folk" and it seems they are sticking to the original idea of sending a disaster entry a la "Flame is Burning"... that's sad, I was being hopeful for a day...

WTF are you talking about? You can still send a Russian folk-themed entry with English lyrics. :?

I know what you mean, but it didn't remind me of a particular song. The melody and arrangements are probably similar to many Russian-penned ballads though, as they tend to have the same construction and harmonic preferences. I couldn't give you examples right off the bat, but I sure heard songs like that one from other Russian singers. Was it inspired by another song? I couldn't tell. xthink

I guess you know more about the Russian music scene overall than I do actually. :)

Huh, if I knew, I surely wouldn't be asking you  On the other hand, the melody doesn't strike me as "Russian". Nor Slavic. It has more "classical" flavor, if you understand what I mean. However that may be, it is definitively very beautiful.

I just love how it's intrinsically melancholic and nostalgic, yet filled with glimmers of hope. It's so Russian somehow. xheart
I find it so fascinating that abstract concepts like these can be translated into music notes. The lyrics clearly weren't the best, but the theme was spot on imo: it had to be a song about hope and resilience.

I finally read lyrics today - whole lyrics. This song is definitively about struggle and hope, and keeping faith, and about staying positive. In her mouth, this song/lyrics have so much meaning(s). I don't understand how anyone could see anything political in this. Perhaps socially engaged, but the struggle of people with special needs is real everywhere.

But didn't they say it was in english? If so, we can exclude this.

Well, so what if the lyrics are in English? It is still possible to have "Slavic folk" tune and English lyrics, I don't see anything mutually exclusive in all this. Or?

It was not a disaster entry, it was a beautiful entry but the timing is so unfortunate..

Yeah, kind of pseudo and non-authentic don't you think? And let's not start on the "English" of the singer xshrug

Well, if they go down the 2012 route it could work, but not if they aim for a more serious entry it will just come across as cringe...

Taste differs, I can't find any beauty in that torture though...

I don't think that the song is that bad. The words are garbage and Yulia's singing is weak, but the melody itself is very good. I have really liked that piano playing.

Even with a good singer who could pronounce the words the song was a cliché badly produced ballad to my ears... but yeah taste differs.

Cliché ? Yes, I can agree with that, it is very cliché, but not that awful, Russia had worse songs, for example that Dima Bilan, I do not remember the song.

I wasn't a big fan of Dima and I don't agree with his winning, but for sure he was much better than that.... "Flame is Burning" is as bad as "What If" (no surprise the same guy did both entries), and them together are the worst Russian entries since Philipp Kirkorov in 1995...

Going for a traditional / culturally linked tune and combine it with english seems to me contradictory. It will depend on how it‘s done, but personally I can‘t think of a good example for this kind of pastiche at the moment.
Plus, as far as Infollowed it, there was no hint of a slavic element in any official or semi official statememt. I‘m expecting something different.

I remember that it was reportedly said that she worked on her English skills since then.

Would you also find that funny, if it said "Slovenia" instead of "Ukraine"? Honestly - this is a strange kind of humor, but obviously tastes are different. Enjoy!

Ahm, I am not really sure why everyone is bothered by her singing. After all, she is suffering from muscular atrophy, so I think that her singing is not that bad for a person of her condition. Moreover, her accent is not only a product of the fact she is a Russian native speaker, but also of her condition. Is she a weak singer? Yes, if you judge her by the standards that we use for a healthy person. But if you consider her illness, I think that her singing is actually quite decent. In the end, I agree with you 100%, the melody was great.

Mrm who follows Russian ESC news very closely (I think he is fluent in Russian) said (and also added link where it was mentioned a few days ago) that Yulia is said to sing a folk song. No one specified what is meant by "folk song".
